My better half is contemplating a "Victims Of GAS" outreach program....

Yes the diamond got pixellated too. I wanted to be extra careful to avoid any trouble from a certain litigious US guitar manufacturer. For the record this guitar is for my own personal use only and in the unlikely event it ever does get sold, it will be clearly indicated that it is a Chinese kit guitar.
no worries CGG, best to play it safe
Over the last week when I've had some free time I've been working away on butchering my nice new EMG 60/81 pickups. I've made some creative use of my Dremel attachments to grind away the plastic covers and bore out some holes for the faux pole pieces. I think I finally have them to the state where the gold covers will fit. Now I'll just need to cut the heads off the pole pieces and epoxy everything together. Well and I'll also need to age the covers for that nice pretend vintage look.

So I had a bit of time this evening and decided to try out the scouring attachment I got for my Dremel on my pickup covers. I used the photos I posted at the beginning of this thread as a guide for the amount of wear to shoot for. Here are the results (bridge on the left, neck on the right).

Next steps for the pickups will be to cut the heads off of pole piece screws and epoxy everything together.
you going for the worn look CGG ? pup covers look good
hey! they look really good!
can you show a shot of the dremmel attachment?
Thank you. I certainly can.

Nice ageing work there. Don't forget to add some wear to the screw heads - easiest to do before you fit them.
And don't forget to study the photos and make sure they get put in at the right angles! ;)
I'm in the middle of the finishing stage at the moment. I have a few coats of amber tinted poly on and the binding and headstock logos are starting to yellow nicely. I think it's pretty close to time to switch to clear coats.

looking good Cascadia, is there a symbol that goes on the body or its plain black ? getting a nice gloss
Yes, there will be a worn gold iron cross behind the tailpiece that I haven't made yet. I've printed out a picture of the original to use a guide to cut mine out of a black pickguard blank that I'll paint. There will also be gold vinyl adhesive racing stripes.

yeah no worries Cascadia I had a look at the picture on your first post after I sent my post.
Yes, about the right stage of agedness. Looking good.
That is looking awesome. Can't wait to see finished.
Me neither! Great job so far!
Now that the amber tinted coats are done I'm doing clear coats and sanding. Hopefully I can put that phase of my life behind me soon.

nice one CGG its getting a nice gloss. When does the cross go on the front ? before the clear coats I guess
I thought the clear coats over the stickers would protect them more ?
The cross isn't a decal. It will be made out of pickguard material and screwed to the guitar top. The racing strip decals would be better protected under the clear coat, but the original guitar had the stripes applied to a vintage Les Paul so I'm just trying to replicate that.
ah ok no worries cheers CGG.
Looking really good, CGG. You should be able to get a really nice shine on that without any problems. And then you can go and relic it!
I finally got some time to do a little bit of guitar work tonight. It was time to give this guitar some character.

I forgot to include the photo of the front of the guitar.

It hurts to see those pics. I know it was always the intent, but it's still painful to watch you do it.
It's a bittersweet moment in the build for sure. It's crazy to me that there are actually people who have done this to real vintage Les Paul's in order to replicate the guitar rather than a Chinese kit!
Pure vandalism.
Looks amazing! I love tribute guitars! (And Metallica)...

@waz It's not my fault! Tell James Hetfield to take better care of his guitars! The things you don't have to worry about when you have eleventy billion dollars... It's like when Kirk Hammett is taking his $500,000 original '58 Explorer or $2,000,000 Peter Green Les Paul on the road.
@Davey Thank you for appreciating my fine chisel and utility knife work ;)
Well the long awaited iron cross is underway and almost ready for paint. Printed off a template I found online and traced the outline onto a piece of blank pickguard material, then got the shaped roughed out with a combination of backsaw, drill and utility knife. I think I'll just need to sand edges to smooth out some of the roughness from the carving process then hit it with the various spray paints. One day this project will be completed... yes, one day.

How’s the project coming? I’m doing one of my own right now as well!
