Cheers Ponch, their emails suggest delivery here in Oz in about 10 days and will post photos of how it looks once they arrive.
Looks wicked Waz, you considering the solid black Ponch?
Not sure yet Andy. I'll have to make sure the black would work with my planned theme. I may knock up some black paper rectangles for a visual test run
Time to get the neck sorted.
I'm using a traditional J bass shape for this. Next job to cut it out

nice looking kit Ponch, keen Waz to see how those vinyl block markers look and hold up to the abuse of bass strings.
Ponch have you got to flash your Overlord badge at anyone yet ?
Not yet Woks I'll have to go to the Big Green Shed - poly / stain isle to find some offenders lol
haha sounds good Ponch, then get the offenders to take a selfy and post on the Bunnings selfy thread haha
So here's the rough cut of the headstock. First I used a coping saw the get closeish to the line. Then hit it with a rasp. Fine tuning next with sand paper.

shape looks good Ponch, so that's pretty well the template shape of the J bass you posted? Looks like it
Yep sure is Woks!

no worries Ponch, you should be loading up that old organ onto a trailer !
I just went back with the neighbours, but it's gonsky!

you know the rules Ponch you snooze you lose ! bad luck would have been a nice score but browny points from the other half its not taking up space in the house !
Haha yes. That rule is the mantra in our household. I snoozed and lost out!

Bummer, looked like it could have had some life left in it.
The headstock is now sanded to 80 grit and all marks removed. Tomorrow night time to sand the neck upto 240 grit.

Now how to finish it. I would like to darken the maple a bit but undecided on what to use. However I ran a metho dampened rag down the back of the neck and it looks like some interesting features are present. Could be a naughty oil (aka Tru Oil) job. Time will tell after sanding.
Note the complete lack of Australian safety thongs. Kids - don't try this at home!

Hi Ponch, looking good.
I just did the same on my Tele # 2 today and put it away after smoothing things out with 80 grit as I want a bit of bitey grain to absorb what I have planned for it.
To go a few shades darker on maple you already know what TO can do but have you thought about adding either a Tea or Coffee solution or maybe even use some shoe polish?
Saw an unusual Fender Strat in a Music shop at Nambour up here on the Sunny Coast last year that was way too expensive which had a maple neck that had a caramel tinge to it and made me wonder how they did it as the guitar looked awesome. Just can't see the value in spending $3.5k on a brand new Fender so it stayed on the rack.
Just some brown lacquer mixed in with the clear lacquer I'd imagine.
I used some Feat Watson Old Baltic stain, applied very sparingly, to get a slightly aged look to the neck on my TL-1 build - both on the neck and the fretboard. It just took the stark white out. I then TO'd it and it came up nicely. Just another way of achieving the same result...
Or it may have been a caramelized/roasted maple neck. Baked in an oven at 300°F/150°C e.g. https://musikraft.com/product-info.php?pid175.html and http://www.warmoth.com/Pages/Classic...ody=1&nWood=20
With a big enough oven you could even try it at home!
Thanks for all the ideas. I'll have a play with some scrap wood.
Chuck, for the fretboard how much TO did you apply, just enough to seal it up?

Good to see the safety boots on display....
Haha the toes survived the session
This evening the neck was sanded thoroughly to 320 grit.
To remove the starkness of.the raw maple I used some FW Old Baltic stain as previously mentioned by Chuck. Diluted 20/80 with colour reducer. I applied with a ball of cotton wool squeezed out. The result was spot on, kind of a light honey colour

24hrs to cure and inbetween the lovely job of body sanding...
A few layers of Tru Oil on the neck should really get that flame popping

nice work Ponch, good to see you are still wearing your safety boots !!
That's the biz Ponch.
Looks great and you can get away with up to 4-6 very thin TO coats on the fret board, just need to lightly buff with 0000 steel wool, then do the frets individually, and when doing the final polish hit everything with Meguiars. Did all this on mine, it came out like a bought one and plays super smooth and fast.
Thanks guys. Woks - still too hot for the safety boots! I should have worn gloves though I managed to rasp a chunk of skin of my left pointy finger tip so no playing for a bit...
Waz - thanks for the TO tip and encouraged by your end result. I must say the FW stain has come up better than expected. You mentioned Kiwi boot polish earlier. I tried some Kiwi tan polish on some scrap. I wasn't to keen on the result
