sounds pretty good Ponch, love the Ponch blues. Your huge hands make that neck look small. A gift you have there !
Cheers Guys. Woks, big hands have created a dilemma over the years. I prefer Gibbo style guitars but to be they feel too cramped and small. Then fender style guitars feel like a better fit but I don't like the usual fretboard radius (I think their player series is 12" radius though . Kit guitar = perfect solution. I can have an F style guitar I like with a larger radius fretboard. Win win!

With big hands maybe you should become a Bass player instead?
I have relatively small hands and after playing Bass for a while find any guitar a bit cramped but gradually get used to it after practising for a while.
Blows me away how many big name guitarists also have large hands and do really intricate work high up the neck. One advantage you would have is a greater reach than a shorty like me.
Wazkelly, my fretless is in the making... maybe time to jump ship! DB would be pleased with that! lol
Once you do there's a fair chance you won't go back.
Cheers, Waz
Ok shipment for upgrade arrived today. Tonerider city limits, CTS pots/switch orange drop cap and new jack plate. P&C duties tonight so the fun will commence tomorrow night!

Yeessss! Loving this build all over again. New parts are like Christmas.
Looking great so far andrewdosborne, what's the finish on the body?, it looks like translucent seafoam green to me.
Doc, it's actually azure sky Wudtone mixed 50/50 with white. But the basswood had a bit of green in it, and I've kind of fluked the seafoam green look quite unintentionally.
Nik - better than Xmas 😊

look out....some major shielding going on there! watch the switch lugs don't short out on it! Tonerider city limits...yaaay
Yes, the shielding is a bit nuts! This was my first kit build and certainly overdid some things Lol.

I'll post another update soon. Schoolboy error with the wiring, all done but I forgot to solder the lug to pot case on the volume arrrrggh. Apart from that sounds awesome!
If you run out of copper shielding tape for your next build you can use ordinary Aluminium Kitchen Foil that's used to wrap food in for cooking, I've used it to shield the scratchplate of a Strat copy in the past.
Can't wait to hear the comparison sound demos. The first demos you did were already sounding pretty good. Love to hear you rip into some SRV with those new pups.
Offending lug ready for solder...
This is the first time I've wired a strat from scratch. It's given me a greater appreciation in its overall design and how fender evolved on from the tele design.

My fav to wire up is the strat, dont know why.
And done... Phew. I thought initially the OTT shielding was causing the issue. But it now plays with minimal background noise!

Looking good Andrew. Nice work on the wiring. Looking forward to hearing those new pups wail! She really is a nice looking strat dude.
cheers,
Gav.
Andrew looking awesome. It will be interesting to see in a month your feedback on the changes. I always find when I do changes I get a bit of a "gain" in my playing wether the better tone or feel makes you keener and you tend to spend more time playing than usual.
@Gav. Thanks for that. I'm really pleased with this Strat. It was my first build and a bit 'rough' around the edges but now tweaked to my satisfaction. It has been interesting revisiting an old project
@Doc - lol, next strat will use far less shielding tape! Being my first build it was overkill in all areas. Like the foil tip.
@Tony - I reckon its partly due the layout of the pickguard. Everything is placed nice and logically & easily accessible.
@Blueshound - I've plugged this in this morning much to the dismay of my neighbours! Twangier, louder, much more dirt. Even on low gain I can get some feedback effects.
One thing to note for would-be up-graders is that to fit the CRL type switch you have to cut a bit more out of the cavity to accommodate it. Also quite a bit of additional weight is added with full size pots etc. but it feels nice and solid.
I may upgrade the bridge later but considering I've hard-tailed it I'm not convinced splashing out on a new one with a hefty steel block is worthwhile.
Cheers Vh. The change in tone is incredible and the tone knobs actually do something now!
Nice work Andrew, it looks the business.
Not only looks great but will sound so much better too. Cant wait for the soundclip.
Very slick Andrew, you'll enjoy it a lot more now I bet
You can't actually overdo the shielding of a strat because the more shielding you have the better it works.
It'd be interesting to know how much shielding is enough, and which areas are more prone to picking up noise.
It's great your upgrades have worked out well!
Easy does it on the shielding as the more you introduce the greater the chance of shorting out on something.
