great job Andy, it was worth doing 3 or 4 practice runs, the string through holes look straight and equi-distant
Been following this diary of your TLA-1R build Andy40, can't wait to see what it'll look like when finished.
I'm about to start a build diary in anticipation of my first ever PBG kit order which will be an STA-1M Strat kit that I'll be ordering next Tuesday, I've already got my shopping list organized for it.
That's looking pretty damn tidy. Love the drillamajig contraption you've got going there. How did you get it aligned for six holes?
@Wokks. definatley worth it. Each time I was able to adjust different things and hone my skill (or lack thereof). I knew it would bug me forever even if one ferrule is less than a mm out.
@ Doc..Thanks for the encouragement...I think your first ever pit bull build diary will be one of the most eagerly anticipated of them all !!! can't wait to see it. Good choice the STA-1M
Well done Andy i hate drilling string holes through telecasters, you can do mine in future
Nice job, double points for the jig.
@Bluesy, each time i tested it, I tweaked the stability with the position of the clamps and the wood on bench, the height and measuring and re-measuring before drilling. The only thing I would have done differently is bolted the contraption on to the planks under it for even further stability. I did discover that even if the string through holes were slightly off centre (and I mean slightly) the larger ferrule bore on the opposite side will cover up the inaccuracy, conversely, the ferrule bore must be measured perfectly (then drilled) or it will look like poo.
@ tony...no worries, you can wind my pickups lol :p
Looked way too hard for me and wouldn't have bothered yet your first attempt looks like a pro did it.
A demonstration of patience and perseverance that has paid off with a really tidy job.
You've nailed the string through Andy. Great job and love the contraption. Works a treat

Great work on the string through Andy, looks the business!
cheers,
Gav.
Im glad to see you sorted it out, one question I have in mind is, did you try drawing a central line and then pin punching reference marks to start each drill hole on? Your test pieces look as though you were close but perhaps even the test wood itself pulled the drill head this way and that a bit?
Edit: I should add that your cataloguing of the issues you faced is wonderfully instructive, thanks for sharing the experience and the trials.
Thanks for the kind words guys. Frankenwashie, I used the Wilkinson bridge as the template to mark the holes (after measuring it in position with the neck attached to also get the scale length correct. The holes were then punched and "contraption" used to drill from the top very carefully. On the back, the string through holes were relatively ok but certainly not perfect or in a line because of the shortcomings of the "contraption". Really its a $30 drill guide, not a proper drill press. I marked out the holes for the ferrules with the "cross hairs" in place and made sure of two things 1. they were in line and evenly spaced and 2. the string through hole was within an acceptable tolerance of the ferrule (ie theres no point in it being on the side of the ferrule), then I used the contraption to drill the ferrule holes at the cross hairs.
I didn't measure properly when drilling on the scrap as I was more an exercise in honing my skill and tweaking the "contraption" to get it to drill as straight as possible.
And that just proves my theory correct.
There is always a workaround.
Nice work, Andy :)
Great work Andy. Looks the biz.
Thanks for the detailed "tute", I always find these handy. I just got to remember who posted what when I'm in trouble. Getting old sucks. lol.
@DB - Thanks mate...thats a real vote of confidence for me!
@Robin, no worries, yes getting old does suck. I've found an increasing need to use my glasses to check my sanding efforts!
Spent Saturday arvo putting the unfinished TLA-1R together to check all body mods. Took a video with my Iphone of the arvo and put it together with an improv sound test.

Ended up with a little list of more mods to be done. but i'll be moving straight on to sanding and dingotoning!!!
It was hard to say goodbye to her until I'm finished now.
Sounds good mate, nice and clean.
Thanks Tony, that means a lot to me coming from yourself.
BTW I checked out your FB vid from January, that strat with the sweet burst? Nice groove! but you're wearing a hoodie, in Jan? is that Melbourne weather?
Hey Andy cool video and is that your backing track sounded cool. Nice upgrades all round this beast should sound great !
What colour DT you going for ?
Haha no it was probably winter, just didnt upload the thing until a few months later, 30C-40C+ here in January
Thanks Wokks. Yeah just threw down a Bm7 and Am7 loop with a bit of pentatonic over it, I used Guitar Rig 5 just with an interface cable with one of the country twang presets.I think the lead started in the middle position then switched to the bridge than finished in the neck position.
I got a DT custom colour...rosewood...its going to be sweet. Its DT Mk I but i'm hoping to finish the whole thing in DT with a satin finish.
Piccy of the rough assembly....its in pieces now....

That grain should really pop Andy
You scored some nice grain with this tele, should come up a treat!
I'm having trouble viewing the video clip, when I click on it I get taken to a blank webpage,I'm guessing that my browser doesn't support the file type....hmmmm....I'm using the most recent version of Firefox in Windows 10.
I might try using a different browser.
Okay, I tried Microsoft Edge and I was able to view the video clip, looks like Firefox has some issue with Photobucket, anyway, I enjoyed watching the video clip Andy40, nice editing and the soundtrack had a cool vibe, the Tele sounds nice.
Not much to report....just started my thirty days of sanding a while back...am on to 220 grit now

You gotta love the grain in Ash....it makes you wonder why they put solid colour over it sometimes....
Hi andy
Did you experience some reaction with the ash dust? i had some itches during and after the sanding with this wood.
so, my wife had some strange skin reaction the day after i've been sanding too..thats makes me think about working out the ash grain as an exotical kind of wood, or maybe just my imagination..
Hi Sansan.
No sorry, I didn't experience any reaction to the sawdust or wood.
I'm probably not the best person to ask though, I don't seem to have any allergies whatsoever to anything really and have never had a reaction to almost anything (non-toxic of course).
jeje ok andy. Not happen before with mahogany, beech, or maple. Yesterday, i sanded the body again, last one before the staining and get some itching again..still scratching, in fact...:(
Anyway, fine job you got in hands....;)
Hi Sansan, I'd check with your GP why you are getting itchy when sanding ash. I've never heard of this.
Would also pay to try and sand in a well ventilated area may help or have a fan blowing the sawdust away from the work area.
The ultimate setup is a dust extraction unit connected to the orbital sander, or are you sanding by hand ?
Also wear a dust mask at all times when you are sanding.
Hi wokka, ive read that ash may cause some irritation on some people. Not the hard ones but its possible. In fact, im one of them...tested XDDDD.
Of course, ventilation and masking is a must...a must that i dont practice. i sand by hand. Fortunately, the heavy barewood sanding ends last night, i hope.
Hi Sansan, that's unfortunate, hope you have finished most of the sanding then.
If you build another kit you better choose another timber type !
Any other timbers that have the same reaction ?
Nop, mahogany, beech, pine, maple, none of them cause me troubles.
Sorry andy, didnt want to hijack your thread...continue please!!
no worries Sansan :)
Initial sanding to 240 complete....applied neutral timbermate. I considered Ebony timbermate but I don't want anything to detract from the Dingotone Custom Colour!
