yeah ok cool Pabs, so presume you got some more holes to fill on the body as well ?
Be nice if the factory thought about not pre-drilling holes !

On my first kit, all the holes being already drilled would have made me happy. Now, it's a little annoying. Oh well, we move on.
Found this image last night and it's pretty much confirmed the colour scheme for me.

Orange it is.
nice orange there Pabs, so you making your own colour with dyes or using DT outback sunset ?
Nah mate, no DT for me yet, I've still got loads of different colours of these UBeaut dyes that I'm itching to try out. I think the orange straight out of the tub will come pretty close to that example there.
yeah thought so Pabs, orange on that quilt top will look awesome. Wish there was more quilted maple kits. Going to have to hunt down some quilted maple veneers I think
It's surprisingly difficult to find at a reasonable price. I was looking for some before I bought this kit.
Yes, go the orange Pabs. It will look awesome.
good advice Ponch as your last tele was orange as well !
Nice work Pabs. Very keen to see the colour go on that quilt! Will look awesome.
orang and blacks gonna look classy
Mmmmmmm orange....
Finally some progess. Life has well and truly gotten in the way of this build, but managed to get a bit done this afternoon.

Got some shaping done on the back side.

And had to enlarge and extend the hole for the electrosocket jack.

Fits well and there's enough room for the jack now. Still want to chamfer the edges a little to get it flush.
nice one Pabs. So you got to fill those darned pre-drilled holes for a square jack plate !
I love orange guitars. Looking good Pabs.
Also, digging through my spare parts the other week, I realised I had all the bits i need to put together a bass. I was planning on doing a comic decoupage, but couldn't get it to work satisfactorily. So, on a whim grabbed a can of gold paint i had left over and...

Something a bit different.
cool looking bass Pabs, what sort of gold paint are you using ? I am using White Knight for my tele.
Interested to know what clear coat you are planning
Nice idea for the bass there Pabs!
Wokka, it was 'fiddly bits' el cheapo enamel. Considering not clear coating it and letting it wear through. This is my brother's old crappy bass that he 'did up' 8 or 10 years ago. It was a wreck. All the hardware was stuffed and had been glued to the body with wet paint.
nice one Pabs, should look cool once it's finished. Hardware glued on wet paint that sounds like a really good move - not.....
productive pabs, looking forward to seeing the tele progress
That orange is going to look awesome on the quilted top. I'm gonna follow this one closely, I really want to do one of these builds.
Got the headstock in order.

And recessed the ferrules for the neck screws.

Was a lot more time consuming and stressful than I expected, but now I can attach the neck and figure out the bridge placement so the string through holes can get sorted. Then I can finally start getting ready to stain. Progress is good.
love the headstock shape Pabs something a bit different but simple.
Neck screw bushes look way cool, prefer them to a plate.
Wow staining isn't too far off, you must be excited about seeing orange on the quilt top
I am a little. Need to grain fill as well. Been thinking about staining the timbermate with red. Nervous though, because the veneer is so incredibly thin.
does the quilt top need grain filling ? I usually leave all the small pits in a spalted top gives it a cool natural look
I don't really know to be honest. The issue is more the tiny little chips around the binding.
fair enough, would probably be worth doing a grain fill but apply it as little as you can so the sanding clean up is minimal
Pablo, your attention to detail scares me! I think I need more tools, and a better workshop to even try woodwork like that.
Top notch job Pabs and love the headstock design

Looking good Pabs, coming along nicely. I agree with Woks, neck ferrules do look cool.
Cheers all. I've been enjoying having a little spare time to work on guitars again.
@Swanny, scary? Nah, this one's been on the cards for months, so I've had everything well planned out.
Screwed the neck on today. Promptly realised there was no way I was ever going to get the bridge in the right spot without extending the rout by about 5mm

Didn't bother with a template, just went freehand.
http://imgur.com/O0DTetO.jpg
And luckily didn't screw anything up!
Then marked out for the bridge and string through holes and got it on the drill press.

Not perfect, oh well, not bad.
And test fit everything with a mock up pickguard.

Also, drilled out the holes in the control plate to 9.5mm to accommodate Bourns pots.
On to sanding. Finally.
Two weeks of hole filling, sanding, scraping and polishing binding and i was happy with the result.

Finally ready to stain. Not gonna lie, I was excited. For a moment...

Seems I've gone through the veneer, not once, but twice. And to top it off, the glue line at the join is still very visible. Gutted.
Ok, so, this is no longer a quilt top. I'm gonna have to decide on a solid colour for the top, at least. Sad panda.
Pablo that's a shame that orange looked awesome.
Bad luck Pabs :(. I feel your pain. Was really looking stunning.
cheers,
Gav.
Ouch. I'd keep it personally mate. doesn't look too bad. I'm not very anal about finishes though
Nope, i can't live with it. Damn shame, because this orange is exactly what I wanted.
Considering white now. Any other ideas? I'm kinda lost now.
Ohh I feel for you Pabs....
