yeah thanks guys just hit it with 1st coat of clear and I have to say I'm pretty happy will post photos later
Hey forumites ( I'm pretty sure that's a word, if not it should be), I've put about four coats of clear on now, I plan to give it another couple and then try and sand it back to see how flat I can get it but I think it will probably need more, still fairly happy with it so far(I'm very hard to please). I have done a rough cut out of the headstock, still needs to be sanded back further, a bit more aggressive than a strat shape but it is what I prefer and since it's a D.K. not a fender it can't be wrong. Anyway here's a few pics, would like to know thoughts on top headstock radius, should I go more aggressive?Attachment 3390Attachment 3391Attachment 3392
Looks really nice there DK! Should be a good entry for GOTM when it is done!
As long as it doesn't have to go up against the Frankenpester.
Looking great so far.
Hey D.K. the body and pickguard colours are looking killer! Such a great combination. The natural body colour was an inspired choice!
cheers,
Gav.
G'day the other DK :D, this is starting to look seriously good.
The headstock looks like a variation of the Ibanez that I went dangerously close to using before settling on a 50th Anniversary Strat shape.
Watching this build with a lot of interest
sorry DK when I did my profile I didn't realise they already had one, all my mates call me D.K. You're right on the money with the headstock shape being Ibanez-ish, that's what Im was going for, I prefer it over the strat style.
No probs about the user name, the forum just grabbed the name from my email address and I left it at that.
I looked at the Ibby headstock and also the Lotus Strat headstock which is quite nice, Don Williams's lead player has a really nice one which also sounds incredible but a fair dollop of talent on his part helps too
yeah the talent is the part I'm having trouble with, I'm still just learning the basics but loving every minute of it. Have you decided on a finish for yours yet
Nice colour combination Dave, should really stand out
Hi DK, I've finally caught up with this diary. Loving the natural body and jarrah pickguard, very nice contrast. Should come up a really nice looking axe. You putting chrome hardware on ? Sure it will go well.
Don't forget to drill the pickup holes and if using the supplied pots they have a small notch to stop them rotating
Yeah Wokka chrome hardware is correct, I did notice the notch for the pots in tfe original pickguard, was thinking about using cts pots with a push/pull volume so I can use bridge/neck and all three pickup combination. Also toying with the idea of a headstock veneer in the jarrah stain, thoughts anyone
yes DK go the headstock veneer in matching colour of the pickguard for sure DK (or is that DK2 haha)
Chrome hardware will look excellent and the electronic upgrades sound great
Today dad was wondering whether he should keep the pickguard he already made or whether he should make a new one. But in the end he decided to keep the one he already had. So he put the pups and wiring in, both of us thought it looked good. Here is before we started and after we've done some stuff.

Still painting the body, up to I don't know how manyth coat of clear, still trying to get it flat for buffing. Thought about binning the pickguard and remaking a slightly larger one after mishaps on the first one had it turn out smaller than intended, but after fitting all the electronics and test fitting it doesn't look that horrible and covers everything it needs to with enough room for the screws. Matney posted a photo earlier. Finally got time to start doing some more work on the headstock. I made a veneer and stained and glued it on, then created a logo on the computer and put it on, don't know what anyone thinks but so far I'm fairly happy with it. Anyway back to watching paint dry tomorrow.

I like the logo DK!!! I wanted a similar style for my own logo, so now my design in my head shall work!
Looks bloody good, liking that a lot
Finally time to put away the spraycans (hopefully). Planning to try and get the body polished today. have done the pickguard already, I was tossing around the idea of leaving the body and neck just sanded as a matte finish and just polish the pickguard and headstock veneer but I couldn't help myself and polished a small section of the back and it looked and felt too nice. I am even thinking of polishing the neck, I know all the trend now is to have a fast playing non gloss neck but the grain just looks so nice with gloss on it. Will post photos shortly.
Finished polishing body, now for the neck

Wow that gloss is awesome DK. She's really come up beautifully. Will be great to see some chrome against the clear. She's gonna look superb!
cheers,
Gav.
looks superb DK, love the gloss !
That pickguard and deeper stain looks fantastic and really compliments the ligter body
Keep up the good work !
looks good DK, the pickguard is fine, and actually looks good a bit smaller, more your own
had time to get everything together yesterday, still a few small setup issues to sort out but not much, judt finding the time through the week to set intonation and action, pickup height etc, also have to polish trem cover.

Awesome as f*** there DK! That thing beats my Strat quite easily :D
You should be real proud to have her strung up and slightly (for now) playable!
DK that is a winner, very slick, looks good
DK, a superb guitar and sensational finish. Looks great.
stunning axe DK, what is the veneer on the headstock ? the simple shape is effective.
An axe to be proud of. Would love to see/hear a demo
Great job!
thanks everyone, had a great time building it, have to say a big thanks to Adam and Pitbull for such a great kit. As always it's a bittersweet moment when you finish one. I guess I will just have to enjoy learning how to play on this one for a bit then I will maybe get another or possibly do a scratch(just like the woodworking aspect). I guess I've always got my Lp that I could redo, oh by the way Wokka the headstock veneer was the same piece of pine as the pickguard with the same jarrah stain.
