Sunburst looks great how many coats of TO do you use Andrew and get it to gloss finish
sweet as build Andrew, I missed the update pics on the weekend. As everyone else has said this is going to be a very sexy beast once finished
trouble it that he is so damn good at it, that it might trick us into thinking we can do it too...
Seriously, if I can pull off a burst anyone can! Maxaxe - go for it, I held back for a long time (in fear of stuffing up an axe) but made the leap of faith. Its a bit like your first bungee jump
Ok today was set aside for the wiring harness construction..
Firstly I made a cardboard template of the switch, input jack, pots and f-hole.

Then I mechanically fitted the capacitors, bent back pins where applicable then cut wire to size.

Then soldered the wires and joints.

Bit of a mess but wanted to test out before cable tidying up.

Everything worked, so cable ties at the ready..

Removed from template ready for insertion..

I used aquarium tubing to pull pots through fhole into position. Only tricky one was the input jack. For that I fashioned a 'tool' using a cut off input jack plug, a paper clip and some string so I could pull squarely through the hole.
There was some small tearing around pot holes but washers and nut have nicely covered.

Harness came into position with no issues. Having got this far I treated myself to a few lemonades. Then I made my first error. I wired the bridge and neck pickup oppositely. Never mind, undid the connections and re soldered correctly.
One final test and all done. No buzzing and everything appears to work.
FYI I think I used what is known as a 50's wiring circuit. There are a few things I'd do differently next time around (braided vintage cable for one) but overall happy with the outcome.

And onto the home straight.

Nice tidy job of the electronics Andrew
Cheers. Also process was not as bad as I thought it would be. Did a lot of planning, prep work, reading, Utubing etc.
Looks awesome Andrew. Would love a sound demo of this baby! A GOTM for sure.
cheers,
Gav.
Nice Andrew - looks fantastic
Neat wiring job.
Such nice work , this is a first class build all the way. So neat and beautifully finished
By Jove, that is a thing of beauty!
nice job Andrew, all that wiring prep paid off ! Looks awesome strung up ! Must be ready to play soon ?
Almost there! Just fret level and final fitting of bone nut. Hope to twang this thing by Saturday!

this is a first class build all the way Andrew.
May I make a suggestion? I don't want to offend, as this is a ripper of a guitar.
The vintage look knobs are just the thing, but your hardware looks gold.
If it is, gold top knobs and a brass nut on the jack input would blend it all in all the more. These little details make all the difference in GOTM as well.
Happy to be told to shut up on this, but I think it would only enhance this axe and your chances.
You've put so much care into this, nice build. Cheers
Stan, you are on the money! I noticed this earlier this morning when I was drilling some screw holes in daylight. Already sourced gold washer/nut for input jack. Working on the knobs... .

ahhh, cool, this will be even better then, nice
Here we go folks the home straight. Gold topped knobs and nuts arrived today. Fitted. Then fret levelled. Conditioned fretboard with lemon oil. Adjusted and fitted the nut, screwed on the truss rod cover. Only job left is to set up. This one's action is going low low low. Had a quick plug in and sounds nice with stock pups.

looks so good Andrew, a total pro package, very nice build.
Only 2 things left to do:
Sound clip. I dontt care how good or bad they playing is, but I'd love to hear the stock pups in an ES. I have one yet to build and would love to hear what result you get.
Get it into GOTM, you have a contender!
That's a lovely looking guitar Andrew let us know what she's like to play.. You know making a guitar beautiful ,and I've played a few . But when someone takes the time to do a pro set up its a great combination. And makes you play the guitar even more.
Cheers guys, demo to follow from setup this weekend. It already plays very nicely. Used a radius block this time around for fret levelling.

This one's ended back up on the ramp. Wasn't quite happy with finish on the back and currently applying a few more layers of tru oil. Almost there...

Nice Classy build Andrew. Classic Gibbo beauty.
I have been resisting the urge to build one of these, but seeing yours makes resistance that little bit harder.

Looks absolutely amazing Andrew. You take all the time you need to get it perfect ;) ;) .
cheers,
Gav.

And back to the ES-1G. This guitar has been fantastic to play, but I was never quite happy with the headstock. So, off with the tuners! I reshaped the top with some small files, then sanded back the face to remove the old logo. I will then re-dye with black FW (the colortone I used wasn't quite dark enough) and use same logo style as on my LP-Jnr which (in my opinion) is a more discreet design. Whilst I'm at it I will also pick up a set of Gotoh SG301-04 tuning keys to replace the stock ones.
Then I will chuck in a pair of Tonerider humbuckers for good measure. I wired in the original pups to enable an easy upgrade.

Nice one Andrew :)
Small update.
Headstock reshaped, re stained & finished with satin poly finish. I've wacked in the Tonerider pups and reinstalled machine heads so I could do some work on the nut. All set up for 10's which being a bit heavier guage gives a nice tone. Sounds like a real blues rock beast now. This will all come off again when decal applied & new tuners turn up. I'll finish over the decal with some aerosol nitro.
This is still my #1 favourite kit and still prefer to play this instrument over my 'branded' ones.. it just feels nice.

good work Ponch where you been hiding ? Nice upgrades. Are they Tonerider Rocksongs ? should have a great sound. Headstock looks sweet and new tuners this will be a great beast to play.
Did you coil split the humbuckers ? I could imagine that would be a tough job getting the larger push/pull pots in place !
Yep Rocksongs. No coil splitting, standard pots were hard enough to deal with! So where have I been hiding? Primarily in my workshop.. have a backlog of projects I'm revisiting for nut upgrades etc, nearly cleared the deck then back onto my TL-1 Esquire!
good one Ponch, I want to revisit some old builds and do some upgrades and improvements but would probably keep me busy for 12 months
