Pic update. Back is like glass now thanks to sanding sealer prep but the top still needs a few coats more. The black stain didn't really get along with the sealer as well as the oak did. Same as the sta, this will get the very last coat via naughty oil spray can.

I might have to do a black top guitar one day... yours and barge's LP/Esquire are giving me maaaad GAS.
Do it!
Silly gun shop taking 5 weeks already to get in the spray tru oil. Got impatient and had a crack at final coating by hand wasn't happy with the finish, not glassy enough so gave it a quick wet sand another coat on the top and sides. Maybe one or two more and a final spray and she'll be mint.
If it's the same place I got mine from, ring them up and hassle them. It took them 6 weeks to get mine to me and I live 10 minutes drive away.
Looks kick ass BTW.
looking nice and shiny Andrew,
if its Queensland Gun exchange with the tru oil they are slow at posting. I ordered a bottle for Pablo for making me some pickguards and trem covers and they did take forever ! I assume it got delivered to the wrong address !
It's from Mackay shooters supply they always have the oil in Stock but the spray can version is a special order
yeah ok I haven't heard anything about tru oil spray, keen to hear how it goes, whats it cost for standard size 280 odd gram can ?
getting tired of ragging on 10+ coats !
Looks pretty good from where I'm sitting. :D I'd be stringing her up now!
Wokka it's $15 a can mate. I'd still do the bulk with the wife on method, but I'll be spraying the last coat just to get it totally streak less and flat
Thanks Nick, soon though
Hmmm very cool Andrew! I'll be very interested to see how the spray on oil goes. Not a bad way to get that last coat streak free!!
cheers,
Gav.
looking sweet as there Andrew
Cheers mate
looks very good
It looks like it smells of rich mahogany

Spray Tru oil going on. Tricky stuff, runs easily but you can wipe the runs like normal to. Goes on like acrylic clear so superb clean.
Interesting.. am presuming it is just thinned TO, so if that's the case, why not just thin some and spray with normal spray equipment?
* looks a good smooth layer there.
Very good question. For me, setting up a compressor and spraying two bodies with ultra thin coats, leaving to dry for a few hours and going again, cleaning the gun between each pass and setting up again is more trouble than its worth. If I was going to spray half a dozen in one session I'd probably do that, but for the sake of time it's just easier to use the aerosol.
I agree Andrew setting up/cleaning the spray gun is a big process. Think I'll stay away from Tru oil spray sounds too thin. You can still get a smooth last coat with a rag, just got to be really thin the last few coats and use a good cloth
Yeah unfortunately I'm not a to zen master yet so spray cans seem to be getting the job done nicely.

A few update shots in the sunlight. This is with two coats of the spray oil.
looking good Andrew, starting to get a nice shine !
Yeah the spray goes on super smooth but more satin than the wipe on method. Can you polish to?
That's a faux binding yeah? Its come out very crisp. Awesome.
hey Andrew sure you should be ok to polish it but give it at least a week to cure, maybe longer to be safe
Pabs, yeah it's poor man's binding.
Wokka. Probs won't get a chance to touch it til next week anyway. Interestingly, the spray cans recommended leaving it 48 hours before polishing. I wonder if the cans have a dryer in it?
Hey Andrew,
with the thinner clear it might be fine to polish after 48 hours but I'd stay on the safe side and wait longer.
Whats the average maximum temp roughly where you are ?
probably above 40 degrees in your shed !
Mate in the shed it's an oven, but it's consistency been above 40 for the last week or so. Melting.
yeah ok, you can do more damage than good leaving your bodies/necks to hang in a hot shed. I'd hang them maybe under a covered area outside the house.
My 4D buddy Wayne left a neck in a hot shed for months and it warped to an unusable shape
Yeah mate I hear ya. They all come inside and hang in the spare room at the moment. Don't want to risk it.
good move Andrew, if ambient is 40 degrees then a shed could be 60-70 degrees which would probably peel or bubble up the clear coats
Yeah I'm really reluctant to step inside that box at the moment. Instant soaking.
yeah might as well convert the shed to a sauna mate ! good way to sweat out pizza and beer from the NR !
That's if I'm ever aloud to leave it haha.
Help! I've placed the bridge, both the pbg unit and the after market one, both have the same string spacing, on the guitar, ran strings up to the nut but it seems like the strings are sitting a little to close to the edge of the treble side of the neck. I've got no wriggle room in the neck pocket and the pups, new gfs units with larger bases, are touching the side of the pup cavity. Should I dremel out a bit of the cavity to move it over?
On further inspection, the strings pass the 21st fret within the board but fan out up at the nut so there is only a mm or so before the two e strings hit the angles bevel of the fret ends.
can you please post a photo Andrew ? Is the neck narrower a non PBG neck ? Or is it a nut that has the slots too wide ?
Wondering why the strings taper compared to the fingerboard. Photo's should help us understand
