I am liking this more and more
Tks Law,
Love that word efficient.
Bosses have been hitting me with that for the last thirty years. What ever it is what ever you do it has to be effective and efficient. :)
Cheers PK
Tks Stan
OOPs nothing to see here this is now under Double Cut Juniors
El Cuba is currently waiting on a 40mm forsner bit to do the control cover route. I thought of making up a template but with the rounting bits I have I'd have to have it either 20mm above the body, or use a rebate cutter that wouls cut a 7mm edge around the current rebate.
What I plan to do is position the 40mm forsner bit so that I get a nice cut centred on the existing route, and then run the router down between two parrallel guides.
Well that's the current plan, but that could evolve :)

At last the new roller bridge and tailpiece have turned up, as well as another four black Knobs.
Is it me or are chinese items getting nastiers with their already cheapness. This bridge and tail piece is no where near the qulaity I have had in the past. Maybe I should have gome with gold parts... But I don't really think gold would add any class to this build. I found a whole pile of black pickguard material in the Man Shed yesterday, so the scratch plate and control cover are,,,, Covered...
I've also found a few nicks and scratches here and there on the body, so I'll have to decide whether or not to do some serious sanding to fix these. mostly on the side and back. I think I can leave the front alone although I might have issues matching the stain I used
Cheers PK
I've mounted the Bridge and tailpiece. Minor stuff up with the tailpiece. I'd lined up the drill perfectly, but had forgotten to lock the pedestal. so the second hole moved about a hlf a mm I had to do some discreet filing on the tailpiece slot
The bridge went reasonably OK, it finished about 1/4 mm out. I really need to get a aloy locating jig setup for doing bridges and tailpieces.
I've drilled the hole from the pickup cavity into the Bridge post. Now just need to come up with asiutable way to drill from the pickup cavity to the control cavity. I would have done more except I have been playing taxi driver all day. Does anyone have a house to rent in Werribee. Need to get my son to move out......

can't help with your son, but nice progress on the axe.
More progress this morning, first I had to go out an split 3/4 of a meter of red gum for the fire, thank god I have a hydraulic block splitter.
Any way got to work on tunnelling the hole through from the pickup cavity to the control cavity. This was a bit of a hard task as I had made the control cavity a long way back, and with a body thick ness of only 37.5 mm I had no room for error, so I attacked this old school with the Brazen Bitch and a couple of long auger bits. I chose this as the hole has to be at least 100mm long and I needed to be able to clear the body work with the Brace.
Result is perfection, see for yourself

Wow, looking awesome PK! Really diggin the look of this shape with the neck on. To be honest I wasn't sure about this shape when you started, but you've made a convert out of me!! This is one amazing looking scratchy. I can't wait to see her completed!
cheers,
Gav.
Tks Gav, she is inching closer
These pics should give you some idea.
Pickups trial fitted, bridge and tail piece on.
Now I have to do a bit of binding, and maybe re-sand the body and refinish it, it's picked up a few bumps along it's journey. But then maybe you could say they add to it's character

I am almost loathe to put a scratch plate on this.
I think it looks damn fine as it is. Minimalist

looks great Paul, I agree, no scratch plate
One hell of a guitar pick :P
A little more didgit extraction done. finnaly got around to making up a template for the control cover. Now to figure out which router and bit to use. The shortest bit I have for the Dewalt is 20mm long. So I might have a ferret around to find soemthing that will go in the Dremel. Other wise I may have to attack this with the 40mm Forsner bit and a chisel.
PK
PFFFFFTTTTTT. set up my router to do a 5 mm by 2mm deep route around the control cavity. the cavity route should be 40mm wide.
Zip zip zip done... Pfffft. 3mm deep and 43,5 mm wide. Guess I am gunna make a wooden control cover now
PK
Wow nice clean build. looks great
super cool mate, cant wait to hear it.
It's been a while since I attacked this little beast. I have had some issues with the control cavity, the cap route finished 5 mm wider than my control cover, so have to make up a new one. The wiring is done with a pair of push pull pots. one pot is tone the other is Vol. the switch part of these pots just takes one of the pick ups out of circuit. So the front switch will disable the neck pup, while the tone switch will disable the bridge pup. Pull both switches out and your in standby.. no pups.
Anyway. I decided to do the binding, which I have been dreading for months. I watched the Vids from Maton on them doing binding on their EA80C acoustics. So I have followed their lead and used masking tape and Tite-bond glue.
Doing the binding on this build was really lesson 101 as it is a simple shape and easy to do. It is just a constant curve.
I applied the glue to the body in three segments. one side, then the back end, followed by the other side.
I taped the binding down starting at the neck slot. once I had half a dozen pieces of tape holding the glued section I rotated the work in the little Stanley Vice I am using to hold it(it has rubber jaws), I then applied glue to the next section. and taped it down. repeat this for the final section. I will leave this to dry for 2-3 days.
good to see how it's done, nice to see this moving on PK
Hey Kells El Cubas looking good well done ,looking forward to seeing what binding looks like on the reveal
Tks Guys,
the binding I used is Stewmac's cream 2.29mm x 6.35mm. It's basically what is used on Gibson LP's
I have a ton of other cream bindings I bought from China(FleaBay) but the colour just wasn't right. Also the chinese stuff is only 1.6mm thick.
I did the route using my Dremel with the Stewmac binding rig. and AFAIC it came out the perfect size. no protrusion from the binding at all.
It'll look gorgeous Kimbo.
PK
My thoughts exactly (in a nice way)
Such fundamentally clean lines with a dark gentle grain are combining with your skills to create something ultra slinky.
Wish I'd checked Maton's binding method myself - before I started.
P.S. Where is the indefatigable DB's Binding 101 thread??
It looks like a giant pick is being wrapped for Christmas. haha
Maton Guitars - Build starts at Part 1 and goes to 15.

Niko, Never been a Giant Prick, only a little Prick....... rofl
Very nice PK!
This is just about done. I just got to find where I hid the bridge posts.
This will be close to the last post on this.
This scratchy was built out of a piece of mahogany that was about to be thrown in the fire.
It had warped about 5mm across the body so the horns that I had cut on it were cut off and the body reshaped to be symetrical.
The neck was also a fixer as the bottom edge where it overhangs the pickups had been damaged in transit from China.
I glued and clamped it all back together.
nice PK, dont forget some final shots when you are done
Hmm, giving me more resurrection thoughts for the Maton L202 I butchered back in 1974
Dave,
Yep you should see if you can resurect the Maton L202 Lute.
What did you do to it? try and cut out the F holes?
This dark Cuban beauty is for all intentional purposes "done'
The strings are on I've plugged it in and it sings .
I will probably do a few tweeks to the Vol and tone pots as they seem to be rotating the wrong way for my likes.
The push pulls work a real treat.
I haven't set the intonation, but it was perfect on all but low E.
I am guessing that will change when I lower the bridge a bit more.
Also need a set of Fat pick up rings, or a lump cut out of the Bridge Pup adjuster springs,a s I can't wind it up high enough.
I've discovered a major draw back with this design style. When I sit down to play it it slips off my knee. DANG..
I haven't played standing up for many many years.
Dave, If you don't want the L202 send it to me. :D
PK
Overall I am very happy with how this sounds. has a nice sustain and tone. Not bad for something built from a failed build.
It was supposed to end up as one of my Eagle 11's
PK
super cool, PK, expert job, looks great
Hey Kells look a treat .Gave a piece of wood a new life in the process.
Well done
G'day PK,
For the poor old L202 I raised butchery to an art form.
The pearloid bit had fallen off the E1 tuner so I turned it into a pointy headstock with three a side, also enlarged the pup routes to house the Schaller HBs that are on the Tele build I posted and filed the frets down to almost nothing.
The headstock is a fairly easy fix and so are the frets, the body will just need a bit of filling but finding a set of period correct pups will be the real challenge.
The neck on these things are tiny and a rebuild is a certantity so the grandkids can have a play, all the rest of the herd are too big for them at their tender age.
Hi Dave,
It all sounds fixable.
The headstocks look pretty much the same as the fyrbyrds. If they are bolt on, then you might find a donor neck.
Tony Giaca had one till he had a fyrbyrd built around the neck.
You could simply raise the whole fretboard and put a new one on. I'd have a go at tapping the frets through till you can grab em with some pliers, then gently pull them out. Then re-dress the fretboard and put new frets on.
Pickups Look about the same size as min hums, You can get fullsize bucker rings to put mini's in. or if you have the originals then put them on a piece of pickguard sheet with holes cut for the pups. :)
All in all it's still a good guitar.

G'day PK,
here's the result of the butchery, looking back I can't believe that I did this ( maybe there was alcohol or chemicals involved )
Hi Dave,
It's a shame they used those barbell switches. I'd pull it out and use two push pulls like I did. then fill the hole and paint over it.
You should be able to get close to that red. look like the same as the Fyrbyrds but with a bit of a burst around the edge. I guess you could shove a scratch plate over it again. easy enough to do. plug up the headstock and put a set of inline Kluson's on it
I guess if you were good enough you could glue a mahogany wedge on the headstock to build it up just for asthetics.
I'm pretty sure they only sell for $3-500 in good condition.
Mini Humbuckers in the pup slots, but fitted to the Full size reducer rings. that way you don't have to try to plug them and re-route the slots.
I think it's a great candidate for a restoration project. You never know you might even come across a set of Maton pups for it.
with that I'd start with Maton them selves. but I'd bet they would want an arm and two legs for some.
:D
Kellza.
Sorry for the tread hijack and putting a very much non PB guitar in this forum.
I still have the original pickguard and will do a resto as good as is humanly ( DKly ) possible, I like the idea of the mini HBs but even the full sized rings may not be enough because those Schallers are big buggers.
I won't post on the subject again until I start work on it and put something in the non PB area of the forum.
Hey DaveK.
Tony Giacca suggested this for the pups as the originals are single coils made by Maton, so you can't get em for love nor money.
"Tony Giacca The Lute had the same single coil pickups as the Apollo, which are Maton's own and are impossible to find. They're bigger than Gibson mini's and smaller than P90's."
"Tony Giacca Best bet would be to fit some Dearmond or Tiesco Goldfoils as they'd take no body mods to fit and would sound fantastic."
Given we are talking about Lutes, and this build is a Non PBG scratch build and is a Lute, I'd say we are still on topic. :)
