yer cool, no need to sand the neck much higher than 240 or 320 grit or the wudtone may not soak in.
Look forward to the headstock shape !

Not using wudtone on this neck mate ;) DB gave me a test run of a new product!
Regarding the shaping of the headstock... I really don't have access to a jigsaw or a bandsaw at all. I was thinking about buying a coping saw and using that but does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm trying to keep the cost down as much as possible as I'm still a student.
I always use a coping saw instead of the jigsaw, I prefer it... but you may want to give yourself several mm's outside the line as it is very easy to stray from the path if you're not used to it. Importantly, don't rush the cut. Then finish up with a rasp and sandpaper.
I've had no problems using a coping saw - as long as you keep a sharp blade in it.

It is time.

Rough cut

Roughly shaped - few more flat spots to sort out.
Everything turned out a lot better than expected! Stoked with the figure on the headstock too.
nice work Nick looks great, see its not that hard to do with hand tools !
Well done Nick. Just takes a bit longer with hand tools.
Looking schmick, Nick.
Might have to come down and borrow your coping saw for my MB headstock and neck heel. ;)
Great work Nick!
cheers,
Gav.
Looks great, Nick. And personally I find it a more satisfying using hand tools instead of power. But that could be the grandfather in me.
I have really enjoyed shaping it for sure. I'm not scared of hand tools guys, haha.
Update:
Headstock shaped and sanded to 240 grit.
Will be sanding the board over the next few days (hopefully!) and staining the neck at some point next week.
With the body - it is almost there. I think one or two more coats and she will be ready for finish coats.
Getting there!
I like the process you went through to cut out the headstock.
You do what you can with what you have. It is a process of inovation. I like that.
The result is excellent
Cheers PK
Cheers PK :D
So I've had an offer from my uncle to nitro clear coat the finish.
Will this work with Wudtone? Lookin at you DB.
Update time.

The body and neck are just about done. The body is about to get its last steel wooling and final coat - going to wait and see what happens with the neck stain. It's looking pretty good currently.
This is DB's Coolangatta Gold by the way. Really nice stain - smells a bit citrusy too.
mm... IPA.
Anyway.
Next on the list is decals for the headstock, clear coating, alignment and drilling, and final assembly.
Getting close now!
looking excellent Nick, you must be happy with the results. I don't think DB will answer on using the N word, he can't even say it he hates it so much. I don't have any experience with nitro on wudtone, Jarrod may be able to answer your question. I think its safer to use the wudtone top gloss keep going with that.
I've used the Dingotone gold and its a beautiful colour. It does smell good hey !
PS you're not the first forumite to use the shower as the curing area haha
looks great, you are getting a really nice result
Digging the colour man. Looks schweet as.
I love that figure on the top, looks bloody beautiful.
Looking great Nick. That neck colour is certainly the balls. I like the amount of figure you still have visible through the body colour. Should look great with the clear coats on.
Personally, the shower recess is the perfect place for drying guitar bodies! Your photo looked so familiar that I couldn't help thinking it was one of mine :).
cheers,
Gav.
Thanks for the support lads. The neck is feeling super nice - really smooth. I ended up sanding through to 800 grit + steel wool so it's nice and quick.
And yes the alcove works entirely too well :P
She's really looking the aquatic part now. Great work.
This axe must have an affinity for damp places (most of us do if ya think about it ;) )
;)
Here's a mock up shot before I get the body ready for clears. Getting VERY excited now. I just want to play it already!

The neck is looking a little blotchy - should I sand back and build up again or do another coat?

First coat of Tru. Shiny and raising the grain already! I'm not sure if it's my phone's camera or my computer's screen but it seems a lot more washed out than it is. IRL the neck is a bit more yellow.
Looking forward to the next 9 coats :D
looking great Nick !
Coat 3... Like glass! The grain is really popping too

Want to play it so badly!
PHWOAR! I know that Tru gets you time in the Naughty Room but jeez...does that look nice or what?!
May definitely have to try it on a future build as a finish.
I'm using tru oil on a neck right now for the first time too. Damn it makes that maple pop.
Final finishing work has begun on the body... Stay tuned, folks.
Right. So the neck is now 90% done. Just waiting for a few decals from our good friend Andyport to do the final coats of tru on the stock/volute.

http://i.imgur.com/rqMl0E8.jpg?1 (kept the fretboard at 4-5 coats of tru)
and finally the first shot of the body after a few coats

hard to get a good shot in indoor lighting at night (will get some daylight shots at some point during the process) but it is starting to build up to a nice sheen. Will probably be doing around double the coats on the body currently.
Finish overall is probably over halfway now. Build has been slower than I'd hoped but it is finally coming to a head.
Looking great Nick, getting a nice gloss. I wouldn't use any more tru oil on the fingerboard. Use some Dingo wax will make it sliperier to play
Whoops double post. Give the coats a couple of days curing Nick with the cooler weather
Looking great Nick! How does the tru-oil feel on the fingerboard?
cheers,
Gav.
That was the plan Wokks.
Gav - the board feels good but I will be waxing it to slick it a little bit more. I only did about 4 coats of tru on there because I wanted to keep it relatively thin. We'll see how it goes under pressure when it's all built ;)
Wow, Nick. The neck looks great. And like Gav asks, how does it feel under the fingers?
It is a little bit grippy at the moment but I think over the curing process it will become harder/more glassy.
I did some backtracking to my last coat of tru an it appears that the first week of September should be around the time it is cured enough to continue the build. After that it will just be fit and setup of parts. :D
This waiting is going to kill me.
A new kit is on the way for Nov/Dec delivery too. ;) things will be getting a bit more modern on that one!
what's the new kit you ordered Nick ?
thats why some of us have 5 or so builds on the go at once so there is always something to work on while others cure !
It's an IB7 with hardtail, quilt veneer and a maple neck. :D
holy cow that should be a great kit, must be a custom order. Presume they don't route out the trem and bridge cavity, will it have a tune o-matic style bridge or a flat bridge that sits on the deck ?
