I sorted out the in series wiring problem. I knew it would be something simple but it took me a while to find it.
To run a Tele pickup set in series, the neck pup cover needs to be disconnected from the (-) lead wire and grounded via a new wire to a common ground. Basically you just cut the short jumper wire between the cover and the (-) lead wire and solder a new wire to the cover.
This allows you to switch the (-) neck pup lead from gound in standard position and the bridge hot lead when you pull the pot up into the "in series" position.
This is where my problem was. Where I had cut the jumper wire and soldered on the new ground wire, there was still a small enough contact between the two that caused the (-) lead to always be grounded.
I bent the wire out of the way a little more and then used some insulation tape to prevent any further contact. Problem finally solved.
Here's the diagram I used. And a link to the source.

Alright. So now it's time to crank up the amp and stand well clear. Looking forward to some sound clips from this Dan.
Not quite yet. The neck is still in the finishing process so it's a little while off yet.
StewMac supply a 4 way switch that will do much the same as the Push-pull pot.....same mods necessary to the PUP! Keeps the tele look!
Gav- I actually had trouble finding a 4 way switch locally, all the regular suppliers were sold out. So I went with the push pull option.
I've got it all back together now, and have made a timber veneer pickgaurd, stained black. And I changed the old scratched control plate for a shiny new chrome one.
I still need more practice installing the frets. I had a few problems on a couple of frets. Some where I didn't pre bend the fretwire enough and when the fret end was pressed in it was still sitting proud. So extra leveling was needed. And getting a good set up has been a challenge because of it.
It's playing nicely now though so that's good. And it's all part of the learning.
I might try to get a demo over the weekend.

That is pretty amazing, Dan. Lovely work throughout.
Very nice! It's turned out a treat.
Wow Dan that is a stunning build, you must be very proud producing such a nice looking axe from scratch.
Keen to hear a sound demo when you get time.
Glad you learnt alot from the build, no doubt your next scratch build will even be better !
Looks great Dan, really nicely done.
How is your 'neck of unusual woods' settling in, and what did you end up using for your fretboard and side dots?
Cheers again guys. Here's a quick demo.

Scott, the meranti neck seems to be keeping its stability. And the wandoo fretboard, being a very hard wood, I think helps give it a bit more chime to the sound.
The demo vid was played into a blues jr, with an OCD clone pedal for some crunch. Recorded through a SM57 straight into my ipad.
Awesome Dan. Great sound! You must be stoked. A beautiful axe all round.
cheers,
Gav
That is a very sweet looking and soun ding Tele
Cheers PK
excellent Dan, gives a good range of sounds, what setting is it when you pull out the rear pot ?
Its got a nice clean sound and has a good lightly distorted bark to it, well done again, stay well away from the Tele napper !
Wok's, when I pull the tone pot out it switches to both pickup's in series, like a humbucker. Giving it more punch and warmth.
Having never played a Tele before I was impressed with the range of sounds I could get from 2 single coils.
I get the whole "Tele" thing now.
Sorry about my average playing in the demo, seems i spend more time working on guitars rather than playing them now. But I'm loving the Mooer Hustle Drive, I picked up recently. It's an O.C.D clone. Works really well as a clean boost all the way to a chunky Marshall like drive. I like the fact it doesn't really colour your tone like some OD pedals, it just adds some fattens to your original tone. Plus it's tiny.
Very nice Dan, sounds really warm and sweet as a Tele should. And looks absolutely amazing! By the way, did you know your first few chords perfectly played "Hospital" by The Modern Lovers? That takes me back.
Those chords were for Paul Kelly's "How to make Gravy". I bet there's a lot more songs out there with those same 3 chords .Quote:

Fantastic work Dan. Looks hot and sounds cool 8-)
Sounds stunning - great job Dan. Love the Wandoo fretboard. Lovely colour - bit between rosewood and maple.
Hey Dan, awesome job done there! The tone is great as well! The neck and body seem to compliment each other perfectly as well.
To my ears it sounded like the neck pickup was louder than the bridge pickup. Might be wrong, it could have been how hard you were hitting. If it is you may need to adjust the pickup heights to try and balance them out.
Well as much as I loved the tone of the Meranti/ Wandoo neck I originally made. I've had some stability issues with it, as some of you guys were concerned about.
I found the meranti was very temperamental in changing weather conditions. So I decided to make a new neck with tried and true timbers. Qld Maple with a rosewood board.
I'm not going to go into detail with words but here is a story in pictures.

Sorry about the overload of photos. But I like seeing these type of build shots, and I suspect most of you here will appreciate them too.
I very happy with how this one came out. I'm getting a little better at it with each one I make, it's all a learning process.
As for anyone who thinks tone woods don't make a difference to an electric guitar once it's plugged in, I experienced first hand the tonal difference between the two different combination of woods. The difference is nite and day. The merant/ wandoo neck was very bright and snappy, excellent for lead tones. While the Qld maple/ rosewood neck has a warmer sound to it. While it still has that Tele twang, it's much more mellow.
I was surprised how much different it sounded with the new neck. Not better or worse, just different.

And it's still a stunning guitar.
that is so good, Dan
Nicely done Dan! Great job....again...
The pictures in this thread are awesome. Not just the quality, but how frequent they are and what they are showing... Great guitar too..
Cheers guys, glad you enjoy all the photos.
Love the photos Dan, and love your build. This really is a beautiful tele.
Cheers,
Gav.
Wow Dan. What a beautiful guitar, something to be very proud of.
I know you make it look easy, but I also know that I'm light years away from attempting anything like that. Well done mate.
Cheers
