Thank you! I hadn’t heard so I bought a set of tone riders, as I really like their guitar pickups. I will do some digging about these, the geezer butler ones sound good, great information

I'll be curious how you like the Toneriders. No one I know has them, but they get lots of love on this forum. I don't think I've seen a review of their bass pups, tho, so your review will be welcome ;-)
The stock kit pickups have ceramic magnets stuck on the back and steel slugs, so are nothing like real a P-bass pickup construction. They make a noise, but it's not a noise I'd want to hear for too long myself.
My choice for something that would be similar to DiMarzios, but slightly different would be Bartolini, maybe because I've got a set in my P-style Lakland bass and know what they sound like (it's ex-Neil Murray and he fitted them). I did fit a set of Bare Knuckle P-bass pickups in a friend's JV Squier precision and they sounded OK, but I prefer the Bartolini sound. But visually, mine don't have exposed pole pieces, so may not suit the look you're after.
So many pickups to chose from, so little opportunity to try them out.
For P style pups, there is a huge range out there. Every man and his dog has signature P bass pups...guess its tetamernt to Leo Fender getting the lay out right. Even Les Claypool has gotten into the act with his gold bars... the ad is pretty funny.
I haven’t seen the Les ad, I’ll look it up!
The toneriders are on the way, and I’ll let you know how they stack up against the d’marzios I have been using for 30 years… I’m confident they will be at least good, probably better than good judging by their other pickups, but let’s see…
Thanks for all the suggestions, please keep them coming!
Simon- did you say you have Neil Murray’s bass?
A bass that Neil Murray used for 500-odd performances of We Will Rock You, when he was in the house band. He sold it on eBay and I went to his house to pick it up from him.
Wow that’s cool! What a great player
Righto, the post office seems to have lost my pickups and electrics somewhere between Pitbull HQ and Sydney, sent 2 weeks ago today....... So it's the waiting game. I did find a 1970 quarter that I might use as a thumb rest though. Of course I can't fit it until I have the pickups..... and lock-down is getting dull! :)
Oh, on another positive note, I managed to find some more of the 'correct' round reflectors (60mm) for the back in orange and red, so we will get there in small steps.
Mail is a bit sketchy at the moment. Australia post isn't always forthcoming with the updates in time.
Agreed. it's been over 2 weeks Perth-Sydney, let's see what happens!
I ordered a couple of cases of beer from Liquorland for my dad for father's day. It was shipped 3 weeks ago and only had to go from Melbourne to Newcastle. It's turning up today. Fair to say there have been some delays with Aus Post.
Also ordered a ZerO Glide nut from 'Murica that was shipped on 4th August and I have no idea where that is. Last update was 9th August with USPS. Aus Post have the tracking info, but no tracking events listed - hopefully it's just stuck in customs.
You can't always go by the tracking info atm... some events may have happened without it being scanned in so the system shows it on the tracking history. I've had stuff show as being "it's on the way to the sorting facility " to suddenly showing that it had been delivered and skipped the "it's out of delivery" step altogether! Stuff from the US is a bit hit and miss. The fastest way seems to be to buy through Amazon if possible and be delivered through their system.
Agreed, I ordered some small parts for my bike from the USA at the end of June, showed up 2 days ago, air freight...
Ok, so still waiting for the bits to finish this project……. 3 weeks from Pitbull hq to Sydney, still no sign 😕
Update- looks like it might not be here until next Friday, exactly one month. Weird, I ordered 2 cases the same day from PB, sent on the same truck, one took 4 days, the other might be more than 4 weeks!
Of course the empty case came immediately…..
Oh well, first world problem 😁
Well, at least the reflectors arrived today…

You can now walking along dark roads with it on your back, and not get run over by cars.
Well, that’s one less thing to worry about then.
In other good news, the additional bits to finish this project (electrics and pickups) will arrive today, exactly 4 weeks from posting!
Also in the pb hard case is a TLB kit with a paddle headstock that I’m going to do an upside down headstock on… waiting at the gate for the postman! 😁
Getting there

Strings on. Pickups are slightly out, otherwise looking good

Well, it’s all together. Silly mistake, I’d centred the bridge carefully on the neck without thinking it needs to be a bit over to the treble side to make up for string thickness, oops! Moved it over a smidge and now pickups and everything in line.
Added a 1970 quarter dollar as a thumb rest to make up for the pick guard (it should be a 1971coin really), added the blue paint to the edges and a Floyd string retainer instead of the button on the headstock. Little more careful ageing and cosmetically it’s close.
Still needs a setup and fettling but I’ll let the neck settle for a few days first

That's looking mean. Now you just need to build a Frankendrumkit and get yourself a band going.
This would certainly have Michael Anthony scratching his head.
Well that was easier than I thought, haven’t touched any of the frets except for polishing them, and the truss rod hasn’t needed a tweak.
Did have to shim the neck to lower the action to get the adjusters mid-thread, but only a tiny bit. Also had to take a little off the nut to get clearance right.
Played it every night so far, settling in nicely.
Here’s a couple more pics of the body close up

It looks great, and I'm glad you got it playing well.
Also good to know you've got that quarter thumb-rest to protect the finish. ;)
How's the tapping going on it?
Ha! It’s not to protect the finish, but to stop my thumb dropping into the gap between the pickup and body 😂
Really enjoyed making this one. I’m now done with the stripes. Not started tapping yet 😁
One year ago today EVH died 😕
I guess it is 😕
Well, I managed to give this bass a good testing through the Ampeg PF500 during a rehearsal last night, and I must say I am impressed with the Tonerider PB pickup. For decades I have used D'Marzio model P in both my basses, and I like a 'growly' rock sound for my bass, so was a bit worried about the 'classic' tones advertised with the Tonerider. Needn't have worried, the pickup is a little more bassy than the DM, but has the same punch. Excellent!
The PBG treble bleed on the volume pot works really well with bass too, I noticed a real difference in the way the sound behaved when the volume was backed off a little, the tone seemed to be better maintained and didn't go to mud.
A successful night :)
There's very little that's better than when the axe you just built feel and sounds good. Good to hear about the Toneriders.
Yes I was happy indeed. And there didn’t seem to be any feedback on the Tonerider precision pickups I could find so I took a chance installing them over the DM or another ‘name’ brand. Not surprised that they are great as the Rocksongs and Tele classics are superb
