So cool. Not sure I'd ever attempt a violin, but it definitely provides some inspiration seeing a project like this take shape.

Yep, honestly sometimes jigs or things like this you put together at home work better than something off the shelf because you make it exactly as you need it to be.
Haha this is a huge learning curve for me but I'm enjoying learning about the process.
Cheers Simon.
The neck is a glued dovetail joint. I have to carve it out of the body in a future step.
Thanks mate, I'm just trying to take it slowly and methodically because I've paid the price of not being patient already with the guitar building haha.
Thanks mate. I think this will give me a solid foundation to do an Acoustic Guitar and a Hollow Body Electric in the future.
Ribs trimmed back.

This is indeed inspiring! Makes my work look like logs 🪵 there are some fine craftsmen on this site
I've been a bit slow getting things done over the last few weeks but here is an update.
The mortices for the linings in the C bouts have been cut.

The linings are almost ready to be glued in, they just need to be planed down to the correct thickness first. I also reduced the Belly and Back down to the correct thickness and cut out the rough outline. Next step is to file the edges down to my pencil line and then I can start on the carving.

Coming along nicely, Woltz. What are the timber’s you are using for the body and where did you get them from? Enjoying this thread.
Here is the list for the whole instrument.
Belly - Douglas Fir/Oregon Pine (Thors Timber, it was a reclaimed piece)
Back and Ribs - Southern Silky Oak (From a tree a work colleague cut down a couple of years ago)
Linings - Spruce (From a mate who is also building a violin right now)
Corner Blocks - Douglas Fir/Oregon Pine
Neck - Rock Maple (Monaro Timber)
Fingerboard - Ebony (Simply for Strings)
Pegs - Ebony (Simply for Strings)
Nut - Ebony (Simply for Strings)
Saddle - Ebony (Simply for Strings)
Endpin - Ebony (Simply for Strings)
Bridge - Maple (Simply for Strings)
I haven't made the sound post or bass bar yet so I haven't decided what I'll use for those, probably Spruce or Douglas Fir.
First set of linings glued.

This may be a most ridiculous question but, how come the close pegs are used upside down?
I don’t believe they are McC. I think the jaws of each have been reversed in the spring to allow for what would be the flat “back” side of the standard clothes peg to become a flat clamping surface.
edit: I take that first statement back, on closer inspection of the pics, they are both upside down and inside out!
One of the pegs. The theory is by switching them this way they clamp the whole lining not just the top edge.

Off the form for the first time. It will go back onto the form when I glue the back on when I'm ready but it's much easier and safer to break the blocks free from the form prior to having a nicely carved back plate attached. After the pegs came off I trimmed the linings back and sanded the whole face flat.

Like all of my projects, time seems to disappear and I haven't done much. But I have started carving the top. I roughed out the platform around the edge where the purfling will go first and then I've started doing the rough carve. I also cut the scroll out.

Regardless of the time you've spent to get to this point, I'm still in awe. To see your progression from (I think I have this right) one tele kit build, to a scratch strat build, to a freakin' scratch build VIOLIN, is nothing short of awesome in my book!
Good on ya.
One thing I'm really liking about the guitar building is that, no matter how long of a break I take, it's always just how I left it. :)
Although, wondering where you put your DIY pedal kit, then finding it assembled and wired into your pedal board leaves a peculiar feeling...
Nice work, Woltz. Thanks for the inspiration.
I've cut the purfling channel and I'm working on the dry fit.

I've been a bit quiet lately because my focus has been on my rocking chair project.

But I've recently been working on the violin again.
I finished the arching on the top. I'll start the carving of the inside this week.

And I've started roughing out the arching on the back.
Both the chair and violin are wonderful Woltz.
Good to know you're keeping busy, and presumably doing ok with being literally surrounded by a state that's in state-wide lockdown!
Thanks mate.
We are actually in lockdown as well so that will hold up my chair project because I need access to the table saw and bandsaw at the ACT Woodcraft Guild for the next steps. Fortunately the violin project can be done with all hand tools from here until the end so I can move forward with that.
Superb work there Woltz. This and the Archtoppery going on at @Darkmark’s is making me want to start attacking the hog back blank I have for my ES-5, but we’re still a ways from being ready for that.
Nice to see you still chipping away at this Woltz
This is really great!
I almost pulled the trigger on some violin thumb planes the other week, you're making me regret my decision not to! Absolutely amazing build
