Okay, my impression is that stain with 50% more water seems to do a similar thing.
My scrap piece seems to be too dark where I used the standard black stain but with 50% more water I was able to wipe a good part of and the contrast within the grain is notable without a lot of sanding. I guess I will try that on a bigger piece and go on with the different intensities of red you talked about.
