Dark red with accented grain

Ink can be wiped off easier than stain thus avoiding the need to sand off too much darkness.

Okay, my impression is that stain with 50% more water seems to do a similar thing.
My scrap piece seems to be too dark where I used the standard black stain but with 50% more water I was able to wipe a good part of and the contrast within the grain is notable without a lot of sanding. I guess I will try that on a bigger piece and go on with the different intensities of red you talked about.
