That's a lovely amber you have going there.
I'm liking how this one is shaping up. Seen too many (including my own) solid coloured strats
Hi Dedman...I can't spray hence the wipe on dyes.... one of these guitars is going to be a right miss match, I have a few Wudtone part bottles, might mix them all up and do a test on a piece of wood one of these days....
Anyone know what thread is on the trem arm?... think mine has gone out with the binmen in the cardboard box.... doh...
Been looking online though and a full Wilkinson trem complete is only £30...any good?
No idea on the thread size (there are quite a few variations on trem arm threads, so there's no standard size), but the Wilkinson trem is very good indeed for the price - you can pay a lot more than that just to get a steel block - and would be a good upgrade IMO on the kit trem bridge.
The only thing to watch out for is that it has a 54mm E-E spacing whilst the kit trem has a 52.5mm string spacing. So whilst Wilkinson say it's a replacement for trems with 52.5mm and 54mm spacings, it's going to move your strings about 1mm wider apart by the body end of the fretboard. Which is only 0.5mm for the two E strings from their current position. So I'd wait until you've got the guitar assembled and then just try moving the strings out slightly and see if that's likely to give you any issues with the strings being too near the edge of the fretboard (or upsets the guitar aesthetics too much as the strings may now not run quite parallel to the edge of the board). You can always change the trem out later.
Thanks Simon, i will glady take your advice, got another couple of top coats to go on the body and neck yet and with me being away in sunny Cardiff Mon / Tues, could be back end of the week I am doing some measuring
I'd also go for the "5+1" version of the trem as it better accommodates pre-drilled screw holes - if you fit the kit bridge first. Even if you decide to risk fitting the Wilkinson bridge from the start, then I'd still recommend the 5+1 style. You can then locate the bridge position, drill holes in the body right in the middle of the 5 elongated fixing screw holes, then fit the screws. This gives you a little room to move the bridge from side to side so that the strings line up nicely along the neck. Then you can mark the position of and drill and fit the final screw in the one round fixing hole.
With the six round hole version, you only have to be 1mm out when drilling the holes, and the strings can look a bit wonky on the neck (which means that you then have to try and angle the neck slightly to compensate).
And hopefully someone who's fitted a Wilkinson bridge to a PBG Strat will come along before too long and say if they had any issues.
I have the Wilkinson 5+1 on my black strat, no probs at all
Someone did. And not just someone, but Dedman. Go and order a Wilkinson trem.
