Kit looks amazing. I would second the walnut Timbermate idea - it looks really great in mahogany.
cheers,
Gav.

That's a perfect spalt top!
That's a good eye you have there wokkaboy. I received the kit a few days ago and yes it does look like there were a couple errors with the routing/drilling of the neck pocket. The front of the body at the neck pocket is not perpendicular to the neck and the bolt holes are offset by the same angle. It looks like the neck fits in the body properly though so I'll probably just need to fill the existing holes and re-drill.

So here it is with the neck in and pickguard in place. I'll definitely be modifying the original shape to minimize the amount of the veneer that gets covered.

You could magnetically attach it possibly and eliminate the screws, or profile it 4-5 mm around the shape of the cavity and add a location spigot to hold it in place.
Alternately, put a rebate around the cavity and flush mount a trimmed down plate.
I just cut the pick guard off straight across the bottom of the pick ups. You could do a clear one and paint the back of it over the electrics cavity in a groovy shape leaving the rest clear. I had considered it , then got lazy.

Yeah, that pickguard is gonna conceal that insane grain pattern. I'd just trim it down to omit the center bit between the pickups and call it a day.
It's been a very extended delay getting started on this project due to a long moving/unpacking process but I've decided to get this underway. So first things first I had to deal with the misaligned neck pocket situation. I re-drilled the neck screw holes and glued in some dowels. Then I marked a line to square off the end of the pocket.

The joint line not being parallel with the centre line of the guitar was bugging me so I've made the call to try veneering the back of the body. I found some crotch mahogany so if I do this right then the back will be just as stunning as the front. Hopefully it won't pose too much of a challenge in the finishing stages to blend the veneer into the sides without looking too obvious. Perhaps a burst will be in order?

Rad. I really need to get a V guitar of some sort.....
