A company called Saga did a line of mandolin and banjo kits, and they were pretty hit-and-miss quality wise. Plus the banjo kits were expensive due to the weight of the metal tone ring.

Barron is a good bloke. Last I heard he was looking at retiring, he was selling off a few tools and bits and bobs.
