Thanks Gav, the back does look best, I reckon!
After a bit of filing I had the pickup seated properly and the body stained black. I spent a few hours sanding, the top is a worry, you don't want to go to far with a thin veneer, but you never know how far that limit is! It's interesting what the black stain brings out of the veneer, though.

Once I'd got that far, I couldn't resist putting a bit of colour down. I might have to build it up a bit in spots where it didn't soak into the timber as well in some spots.

Yes, it's a shame its hidden on the back!
The front halves look like they are a bit mirror imaged, cut from the same piece.

that's how the flame maple veneers work that are cut from the same piece and bookmatched to line up

Wow Swanny, that colour is amazing! Not sure I've ever seen a blue as deep as that. What are you using?

wow, nice colour swanny, I was thinking about putting a black stain down first too but wasnt sure how it'd turn out.
