Happy with the best grain not being covered by the pickguard
given that I'm staining it black, a light timbermate to highlight it would be the go?

I think I want something a bit more subtle, visible but not taking over

this should come up well MD, great timber in this one

So I finally got around to starting sanding, noticed a glue spot between the pickguard and the output

looks like a gap that's been filled to me

But I figure worst case scenario that'll fill when I apply the timbermate

any idea's on what to do about the glue spot?

See if you can sand them out.
(Should be able to sand at least 2mm off the face without causing any dramas)
Then attack it with the trusty Timbermate

As DB said you should be able to try sanding some more. Try using some wire brushes from the big green shed to hopefully remove some of the glue spots.

So do I attack it with the Random orbital sander or should I be more patient and keep going with the 180

Im a nooby, but if your doing a ST then it looks like most of those issues are under the pickguard, Id suggest roughly put it in place and decide if you need to worry about it at all. The first few pics are defiantly not going to show after everything is all said and done

Good point Soundguy.... Totally missed that!

Personally, I am not a fan of orbison sanders but when you need to remove a heap of timber they are the way to go.
I just don't use them for finish sanding as they leave those annoying little swirl scratches that show up when you apply the finish.
Always finish sand by hand :)
