Hey Tony, that never occurred to me. But I think you might be right. Hopefully the eye will be drawn to the black bling.Quote:

I will give it some more thought, but I suspect that Adam will be sending me another parcel in the near future.
Thanks for the tip mate,
rob
Now with a dozen coats of TO on, she has darkened up a bit, but I still don't know what happened to the colour. It still looks a non-descript brown to me. I've still got about another dozen coats to go, so it should still darken up a bit more. I have been rubbing it down with 000 steel wool between coats but as of tomorrow I will start with wet and dry starting with 1000 and going through to 2000.
I've ordered the "blackify" kit from Adam, (thanks for the idea Tony) so I am hoping the black might contrast nicely with the wood grain. I'll do a mock up of both the chrome and black hardware and decide what looks best.

Definitely turned an interesting colour. Most TO finishes I've seen (mine included) tend to go more towards an amber/yellow tone rather than brown. It's kind of unique which is nice.
looks excellent Rob, you are patient applying 24 coats of TO (once the next dozen are done)
Nice touch recessing the trem cover plate. I think black hardware will look sweet mate, good choice.
Must be good to be building again
Looking great Rob. I think black hardware will look cool.
Cheers,
Gav.
@ Nick
Yeah mate, I've done quite a few TO's and this is the first time is come out brown. Quite strange. But you are right, it will be a bit different.
@ Warren
Thanks mate, encouragement always appreciated. 24 coats sounds a lot but up here in Brissie, I can usually get 3 coats done in a day.
And you are right its good to be building again. Its a slow road back but I think I'm getting there.
@ Gav
Thanks Gav. I wish I could take credit for the black hardware, but it was all Tony's idea.
Cheers guys

Just a quick update.
After 25 coats of T.O. the colour is still un-inspiring, but if you turn it just the right way to catch the light you can just see the gloss. I have seen some Suhr guitars in this kind of colour, so although not my favourite, I guess I can live with it. Lol.
Plus I finally finished the wiring. Whew!
It took hours because I suck at soldering and circuits etc. But I think its working. I held a tuning fork over each of the pickups, seems to be OK. HSH configuration with coils splits on the HB’s, and 50’s wiring.
I am still not sure how well the mix of Toneriders and Entwistle pickups will go. I will have to wait until the guitar is finished and strung up to give it a proper test.
Cheers

Your soldering is looking okay mate. Just make sure they're all silver and shiny. It looks like a few on your DPDT switch are a bit dull. If you get issues I'd be checking them for cold joints.
Also try to avoid using a ton solder - you only need enough to just flow over the joint.
looking good Robin, nice and shiny. Nice mods to the electrics, so have you got tonerider humbuckers and the single middle pup is entwistle ?
Have you got a mock build pic with the neck and pickguard on ? can't see the colour of the pickguard
