that fix should work fine too.
black is always good on a guitar, if the grain is nice do it on the sides back and neck only and keep the grain on the top cap, just a thought

Brendan, if you want a black stain but still want to see the grain then I'd go BMW or Dark Onyx. I know they are hard colours to work with but I think DB's black dingotone may be too dark to show the grain, you will have to ask DB that question
Bass headstock is a little smaller than what it is based on but doesn't really look unbalanced and wont make a difference unless you are looking to fit an original truss rod cover.
Having done a couple of basses, I'm kinda over the elephant ear F style tuners. Very tempted to upgrade / crossgrade to something a touch smaller.
