Awesome - thanks for the link. Jarrah looks pretty red on the web page. Did you use that for the tobacco sides??
cheers,
Gav.

such a nice burst wokka, is the veneer thin enough that it simply bends at the nut end of the head stock?
@ Gav --> yes the sides are jarrah stain, I've really heaped it on heavy thats why it looks much darker than the webpage pictures. if you gave it a light coat you could achieve a more dark red colour
@ Stan --> cheers for the comments. The veneer is about 2.5mm thick but I've sanded it a bit thinner where it curves near the nut and soaked that end of the veneer in water for about half hour before I glued it softens the wood and makes it bend easier. Then fit about 7 clamps over it and far too much titebond glue so it stays glued !
looks amazing Wokka you've really perfected the art of the burst! Do you just apply your layers with a rag?
@ Tim --> cheers mate, yes I have a separate rag for each colour and a blending rag. I cheat a bit and use a colour reducer (from Feast Watson) and this makes blending the colours much easier
Nice! I spotted a paler tobacco burst finish online and wondered if I might be able to do it with only different layers of shellac (but wiser decided not to go down that path I think...) I looked into those off-the shelf stains and was tempted by them - especially the nice rosy jarrah - but was worried they might clog and obscure the natural grain. Seeing your results I will keep them in mind for a possible future project :-)
Awesome burst Woks.
I've had some great results with the prooftint stains. They are pretty easy to work with too.
I'm jealous of your blue SG in your other thread. That's going to look amazing.
cheers John and Dan, yes the prooftints are easy to work with.
John if you look at the older build diaries Robin build a STA-1 kit (ash) with a black stain and the grain was still clearly visible, so you can go as dark as you like with the colours.
Yes Dan can't wait to get more clear coats on the blue SG
I got 4th clear coat on lastnight body and neck, these pics are in poor light were taken before work and its overcast. I'll get some better pics on the weekend in good light, I should be up to 6th or 7th clear coat by then

Got the tobacco burst axe finished yesterday, pretty happy how it turned out. Still getting used to the contrast of the maple fingerboard. Put gold hardware on and a loaded black pickguard, I'll upgrade to some nice toneriders soon.
Plays really well with no setup yet
