That's a great mod Frankie. Is there a tutorial for it?
cheers, Mark.
Edit: BTW Some excellent sunbursting there Andy. Done by a veteran by the looks.

Good work Andy.
I switched to using spray gear about a year ago but haven't attempted a burst yet.
I have accumulated 3 guns now. An airbrush, a mini touch-up gun and a full size gun. They all have their place.
Can you explain how "a mixture of stain, lacquer thinner, method and shellac." works?
I can't imagine thinners and metho working together. I accidentally combined them once and it instantly turned a milky colour. Fortunately it was just doing clean up, not application.
Not looking to shabby Andy 🤘
Thanks guys. That's a massive compliment coming from phrozin too.
McCreed, Phrozin could probably explain it better than me. I just used Methylated spirits instead of dentured alcohol when mixing the lacquer thinner. It was about 1/2 and 1/2. I then added the stain till I got the colour I wanted. I then added a "smidge" of shellac (pre-prepared by me;)) as the lacquer. Maybe I've made a chemical boo boo bit it seemed to work for me.
I thought long and hard about the type of lacquer and tossed up getting some nitro. I settled on the shellac as I was still undecided about doing a clear coat in tru oil or not.
I'll pass that on to phrozin for the chemisty, but a couple of comments I will make are:Quote:

"I just used Methylated spirits instead of dentured alcohol..." - Methylated Spirits (AUS) is Denatured Alcohol (USA)
"I then added the stain till I got the colour I wanted." - If it was an oil based stain, the basic solvent would likely be Mineral Turpentine.
"I then added a "smidge" of shellac (pre-prepared by me) as the lacquer." - Presumably you dissolved the shellac flake in Methylated Spirits.
So, potentially you've got three different types of solvent in that mix: Lacquer Thinner (acetone based), Methyated Spirits (alcohol) and Mineral Turpentine (oil based).
I don't pretend to know chemistry, but I've never heard of those three being combined in one liquid mixture.
I'll be very interested to hear from someone that does understand the chemistry though.
It does sound like weird science, but the results look OK.
Not oil based stain McCreed sorry it was Colortone stains. and yep the shellac was dissolved in metho as well.
I think I got the idea from Beau Hannham guitars video on it except I think he used nitro instead of shellac.
These questions are wayyy above my paygrade. I have no idea if I created a chemical nightmare but it seems to have worked.
Lets see if this created a conundrum, I ditched the tru oil idea for the gloss finish and went with Duplicolour clear gloss which I believe is acrylic.
again seems to have worked.
Dingotone neck stain done. Time for headstock decals and tru oilhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...de1719714b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a6e7833414.jpg
