Aside from that, its been a busy dusty old weekend in the FrankenLab. Just spent a couple of hours turning Big wood (singular) into little wood (plural) and piles of disjointed wood, and then reassembling the little wood (plural) into slightly larger wood (Singular). The disjointed piles of wood stay disjointed but were swept into a more tidy but disjointed pile.

Got the first two undercoats on the SV-1 and wet sanded the EXA-1 as well as filling the jack point on the FrankenWashie and playing with resin. I thinks its beer O'clock!

Well after some maturation, and a wee bit (read, "this bastard is so far from square that its a good thing that it was oversized in every possible dimension as i'm going to develop arms like Arnie planing it) of molestation with a jack plane, we ended up with this:

The eagle eyed among you will spot the couple of obvious flaws, The slightly more than "slight" whoopsie with the line of the rip cut on one section (Japanese back saw, VERY hard maple, Meh, what do you do eh?) and also the fact that the grain patterns are 90 degrees out on the right hand slice.

Its about testing the concept, I have discovered that I need to pay more attention to the fiddly measuring, and the prep work, and the selection of wood. Simon Tan i Ain't (Yet). These are things that can be worked on. The purpose of this neck blank is to discover how to do it badly, so that i can learn to do it well.

The intent is to work this to finality, as an alternative to mount to the FrankenWashie, if it doesn't work out then no harm done and lessons learned. If it goes really well, then it may be the star of it's own thread as the basis for a separate scratch build. The existence of the FrankenWashie after all was purely to repurpose a wonderfully slick playing neck from an otherwise dog of a Washburn MG42. Where this all will go, i don't know but i suspect i'll have fun along the way.

You might be able to use that bit of wood for something else at a later stage.

Yeah, given that it was oversized to start with Doc, I think it is good to go. The slip in the cutting is no big, that the the head end anyway and most of that will go with the head shaping anyhow.
As for the grain issue, MEH. It was forced by the nature of the wood anyway and some of the original distortion after cutting. I don't see it as being a biggie.

We shall see how it all goes mate.

No worries, keep us updated, cause I'm following this thread with great interest, I'm particularly interested in hearing how the Frankenwashie sounds when it's all back together.

So, while we contemplate how to get around the latest FrankenWashie related conundrum, the FrankenLab is tied up with experimenting on building of necks (Not sure where to put the bolts though?).

In prior instalments, we sliced up some maple strips, dressed them (Badly) and clamped them together with some titebond to get a rough and rude neck blank.

Said blank is now in two pieces and a large pile of shavings as below:

So far things are proceeding according to the rough outline of the overall plan so that these bits end up being glued to look something like this:

There is a bit of work to do in terms of clamping Cauls and set up before we are ready (read: fool hardy enough) to proceed with sticky stuff.

The keen eyed denizens will notice that in the last shot that the centre lines do not line up. The reason being that the blank was not quote symmetrical about the centre line, once glued I will establish a new centre that maps down the middle of the centre laminate across both head and shaft of the neck. as you can see i have (attempted) to line things up by the edges of that centre laminate.

Will post again once it is a glue sodden mess!
