Fuzz's ES-1G

Hi all!!!

Thought I would start a build diary since I was too slack to take photos the last time.
So here goes, Santa dropped by and left an ES-1G kit under the tree for me, THANKS SANTA!!!! Anyway this looks like it could be a whole different kind of beast to the ST-1 kit so I could use all the help I can get

I unboxed the kit and the neck fits nice and snug, the humbucker routes are a little tight in the corners.

The back of the guitar has some pretty sexy grain.

Somethings I did notice though were a bit of a rough joint along the bottom of the neck pocket.

The thing I noticed that worries me most is the high side of the fret board is rounded at the body end of the neck leaving the ends of the frets sticking up, any tips?

I recently purchased the same kit. I haven't started sanding yet but my mock build revealed similar things to yours. My neck pocket is pretty rough too. My humbuckers didn't fit at all so I've had to route out a little more in each corner of the pup cavity. I didn't notice the fretboard issue but will take a closer look when I get back from holidays. My binding looks about the same as yours in some spots but I've almost finished an esb4 kit which had similar issues straight out of the box and the binding comes up real nice with some careful sanding close to the edges.
Looking forward to seeing how your build goes Fuzz. What colour scheme are you going for?
I'm going for a lemon>cherry>black burst on mine.

I haven't progressed much further than this but I figured a little bit of sanding and filing would sort most things out. The rounded edge on the fretboard only effects 3 frets, I have to seat and level the frets so I'll figure out what I will do with the fret ends then. As far as colour goes I want to keep it light so I am pretty interested in the dingotone butterscotch or something similar.

Hi Fuzz, those high frets really need a bang with a fret hammer and if that doesn't work a clamp and some thin superglue might pull them down.
Rest of the kit looks great. Butterscotch ES-1G sounds choice
I'd grain fill those small chips near the binding, Might as well grain fill the hole cap

I just have a few novice questions about timbermate.

First of all, today I wondered down to my local hardware store (no big green sheds around here) and there were a few colours to choose from and I was left wondering what is a good colour to use for a fill?

And second when I choose a colour do I sand first then fill then sand or do I just fill then sand?

Which Timbermate colour depends a bit on which wood and what colour you're staining it (and what effect you desire). I sanded to 320 first and I'm thinking I should have filled first in hindsight. It should be noted that I've had a few pints at a local gig so it might be worth waiting waiting until someone sober replies

Hi Fuzz, don't think it matters that you have sanded before grain filling. What colour will you be staining the flame maple cap ? Some colours work well with a dark grain fill and some a light grain fill. I tend to prefer darker grain fills like jarrah or even ebony is the darkest gives a cool effect and will pop the flames the most

Nice start Fuzz, no problem with sanding before timbermate and then again after. Look after the top cap, they are pretty thin

This afternoon's effort.
Found some wilkinson humbuckers in my box'o'stuff. Thought they might be better than the stockies so I enlarged the pickup routes to fit them. Gave the body a sand ready for timbermate and shaped the headstock.

Isn't that a Flame Maple top?
I'm trying to understand why you have plastered it with timbermate.

Do you intend to finish it a solid colour without showing up the Flame?

That maple veneer on the top is only about .5 mm thick, Id be very careful when sanding it back in case you sand through it.

Nice work Fuzz! I did a similar thing in my es1g and grain filled with mahogany timbermate. The flame is really awesome after laying down the colour so I'm glad I did this step. Keep up the good work good beers.. Undoubtedly they go hand in hand!

Yeah it did seem like overkill to put all that goop on to fill a couple little spots only to sand most of it off, lucky I didn't have much on this arvo. It cleaned up alright and found and fixed a couple little glue spots while I was at it.

Put some colour on the body found a few more spots that wouldn't take the stain especially along the join in the veneer, just about to do some forum searching to see find out how to fix it up. Wow! That's a great colour, Fuzzbeard! You've got great grain pattern both front and back.

The wire brush should break up the smooth surface of the glue.

Not when I was there a week or so ago. They have ones that look about 120mm to 150 mm long with an arc shaped head??? Alternatively was an even bigger flat rectangular one with steel looking wires.

Why not order the cheapie on eBay for less than $2 delivered? Or if you can't wait the Drummond Golf site is Aussie and you would probably have one of those within a week.

Something like these or go really upmarket.

For the glue line, i used goof off and then sanded then refilled with timbermate, sanded back then stained again, keep doing this until its all gone.

Geez, where were these when I went into our largest recently opened BGSFOS?

It is almost like a game of hide and seek both with the staff and stock, not to mention deliberately rearranging layout so that no two stores are alike.

Obviously they want customers aimlessly wandering around searching for things without a clue so that they will make impulse purchases along the way. If you are lucky to find someone in a Red Shirt they also have NFI so what chance has anyone got?

Walked into the hardware store this morning and found these upmarket luxury deluxe model brushes pretty much straight away and then skipped out of there happily with my new purchase all within about 10 minutes. Yay!

The secret to finding stuff at the Green Shed (at least the one I go to) is ask the cashier in the tool section, they can look it up on their computer and also ring up all your purchases so you don't have to queue up at the front

After a few weeks of being really slack I popped some abalone dots in the fret board, got the neck nice and straight, leveled the frets and made them shiny again.

Yeah went with the ginger beer for something a little different but it was a bit to sweet for my tastes

How to get service in the big green shed:

Walk around wearing a leather jacket, long hair and carrying a bag and a open face helmet. Start putting stuff in your bag even if you don't want it, you will be dumping it later anyway, in less than 5 mins 'Customer assist in isle 17" over the PA and a couple of guys will rush to help you. :cool:
