PB-30R (30" scale bass)
So my son's 9th birthday is coming up at the end of this month and he's looking to start music lessons at his new school, and what kind of father would I be if I didn't get the little bugger his very own battle axe!
Since he's not very big and I know a thing or 2 about bass, I figured a short scale bass is the way to go.
I find that it is quite heavy, it's a very thick body. So I've done some routing to take a bit of weight off in the space under the scratch plate.
Just to make it look super awesome I've also routed a couple of shallow recesses in the body and filled them with resin which I mixed with blue chalk and glitter.
I mixed up a bit too much resin so I got out the dremel, spent about 20 seconds making up a logo out of my son's initials (XQW) aaaand filled it up with resin too.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8f392e6b71.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2ed6e6c76a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...dfe803b2eb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ccb5011ee9.jpg

That is awesome. Looks like he even has a little skin in the game.

Ok I haven't had a chance to sand back the body yet, but I have done a mock up to show how the body will look with the scratch plate and bridge in place...
Was thinking of doing a gloss black for the rest of the body. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c67b47eb74.jpg

I like it. But I think you misspoke? Didn’t you mean you haven’t had a chance to get your lad to sand it back? 😉🤪

Yea right, getting my son to do manual labour is like pulling teeth!

So I've sanded back the body to 1200g, shaped the headstock and given both a coat of clear resin. I was going to do a gloss black for the body but I think the clear resin still come out better.
I'll sand back and do a few more coats of the resin till I get an almost glassy mirror finish.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c135db2640.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...09da667aaa.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2081d0d826.jpg

I forgot to mention, I used a shinto medium/fine rasp for shaping the headstock.
Seriously, these things are freaking awesome! If you haven't got one yet, get one!

Thanks Marty, I just hope the machine heads don't look too bulky on the thinner head once it's all assembled
