Gr1-sf
Hi,
Well it arrived today.
Attachment 14930
Unboxed and everything was well packed...as predicted.
Couldn't help myself, i had to mock up the neck with the body and as far as my inexperienced eye can tell, its fits perfectly.
This is my first build so I'm taking it real slow. I'm very fussy and moderately OCD.
My plans at this stage is all gold harware with either black or white body colour with gold metalflake front.
I want to add a bit of gold inlay if it doesn't exceed my capabilities and i have also put thought into possibly modifying the binding with gold glitter...mmmmm...(see exceeding capabilities)
I am keen to not have any reference to "Gretsch" .....i.e. on the Bigsby tremolo or on the tone buttons ect....although i adore Gretsch guitars it's not a Gretsch.
Time to order some tools.

Like the sound of your plans Flypast.
For the Gold Glitter top I was cleaning out some of my kids stuff a few weekends ago and stumbled upon some acrylic glitter paint that probably came from Spotlight or Office works and thought maybe worth testing on scrap timber to see how it would look and whether it would hold under a top coat? Project for another day as the stuff I found was green and not ready to do one in that colour yet.
If thinking of a solid colour Black can be hard to get right as it may show up every imperfection and white may be a bit more forgiving. Mind you, I was recently contemplating what to do on the next build and one of the ideas was to use black ink jet ink all over the body, neck and headstock, and as the kit I had in mind also came with a maple fret board was also thing of doing it black too and drop in some mother of pearl fret marker dots. The other part of the plan was to wipe off as much of the ink as possible after 24 hours to see if that helped to reveal the grain, if not go again to fully saturate and once dried applied the top coats as they are easier to get down without worrying about swirl marks in the base black colour.
Hope this gives you some inspirational ideas to work with.

Thanks Waz...got lots of idea's, certainly not new and probably been done before but my novice skills will slow me down, my only saving grace is that I work away week on, week off so I have plenty of time to myself to think things over and contemplate.
Although I have barely started this, my first build, I think I see myself building another and maybe another.....i'm hooked.

Very addictive and only limited by amount of available time and enough spare money.

Always interested in a GR-1SF. Can't wait to see how you go

Nice looking guitar kit! What was the kind of Gretch that Malcolm Young used to play? Was it a Gretch?
