Dingotone/Wudtone alternatives + finish questions

Hi there,

Are there any other alternatives to Dingotone or Wudtone. Before the choruses of "Use Dingotone" flood in... I tried. DB tried to make me a custom green colour similar to Wudtone Emerald Isles, and I am grateful for his efforts. He sent me a photo that I was reasonably happy with, allowing for differences between photos and reality.

Unfortunately, during this process it was discovered that there were problems with the green colouring (dye? pigment?) and as such he can't supply my custom colour, and Tarkine Green and Nullarbor Oche are no longer available until DB finds another green colour/dye/whatever.

So, I have already received my DT neck colour, Bloodwood, which came with my kit order. So now I have to find a different type of finish for the body (or, I guess, also find another finish for the neck too).

So - has anyone done a guitar using WT and DT? I don't mean mixing them together, although Adam says they should mix ok as they're similar oil-based products.

I'm more concerned about if I do the body in WT and the neck in DT, will the finish look different? Meaning glossiness or look and feel? It's probably a safe guess to say they *will* look different, given that they're different products. But how much difference is the $64k question.

WT is rather more expensive than DT, as it's imported, and especially if I have to buy another neck finish, as they don't have a cheaper neck kit like DT do.

Has anybody done other oil/stain/wax finishes that aren't Wudtone or DT? Spray painting is probably not going to be practical, as I don't have a spray booth or proper spray gear, and hiring one would be prohibitive. (I tried making one at home, converted my garden shed to a spray booth, which was ok for a pinball machine resto but not that great for a nice lacquer guitar finish... rattle-can matt black maybe :-) ).

Any suggestions gratefully received.

I've just used woodworking dyes for the first time and am finishing off using True Oil and am pretty happy with the result so far. You can make your own colour by mixing them (use a measure and make a note so you can reproduce it)
I used fountain pen ink on a previous build but that company has seemed to vanish.

Possible to use a standard wood dye that is thinned to your colour liking and use the DT top coat if they are compatible with each other?

You can use Angelus Leather Dyes they are colourfast and I believe they do 3 different greens.Green , Kelly Green and Jade Green, make sure it's the leather dye and not the paints. They blend really well. I've used Acrylics, Tru-Oil, wipe on poly and nitro over them had no problems. They are available pretty much worldwide. Very concentrated vivid colours. I've used the red orange and yellow, but they have a vast array of different colours.

The Dingotone neck finish can either be polished glossy or only to satin. Its up to you. See how the body goes then polish the neck to match
