ES-1G build
I've just started building my guitar and I am following the advice of sand and then sand some more. Unfortunately this has led to a problem. In trying to get rid of a visible dink where the two halves of the laminate meet by the pick up rout I have created a patch. I found this when I turned the guitar round after working on the back and I thought I had inadvertently scratched it. So I sanded some more and this has made the patch bigger. Has any body met this problem? If so how did you resolve it? I was thinking of covering it up with a waterslide decal. What would you do?
Any advice would be welcome.

Sorry Monkey, you've sanded through the veneer. Solid colour, or the decal, are your only real options now.
-
Bad luck there Monkey. Looks like that veneer was less than paper thin.
-
bummer Monkey, I always try and warn new builders about how easy it is to sand through the veneer.
As others have suggested if you want to keep the flame maple cap stained look, best cover it with a logo or maybe a sticker.
What colour are you planning to stain it, was it you talking about a cherry red burst ?
-
Thanks for the replies, I thought this was the problem. I'm planning a cherry sunburst so I'm going to get a sun decal made to cover the patch.
-
good plan Monkey, now you know what basswood looks like !
-
Sounds like a good plan and hope it works out better for you from this point on.

Maybe a reverse burst, solid yellow in the middle and transition through the grain towards the outside.

OK I've started adding colour. I'm using Wudtone Cherry Flamenco with Goldenrod burst and have applied one coat today. It went well and I am pleased so far but the colour needs building up. I've never used Wudtone before so I was pleased to find it easy to work with. The patch is hidden by the clamp I've used to hang the body from the roof of my workshop (I know it sounds grand but it's a big shed really). It will be interesting to see how the patch looks after a few more coats (I will post pictures so anyone else who makes my mistake can see how things develop). I have been looking for sun images to use on a decal and there are loads of great images to choose form especially from tattoo artists. Second coat is going to be applied on Monday.
