Anyone used the Black Ice mod??
I'm planning to make one, but I dont particularly want to spend $30 from Stewmac including shipping, so Im planning to DIY from this site's guide.

However, the shipping for 2 diodes from the linked site is about $40, which is ridiculous cos the diodes cos $1.50 together. So anyone know where I can get diodes cheap in Australia??

Eshays, I'd call some of the local electronic stores to see if they stock the diodes. Its a cool idea to have distortion at your fingertips but I'd still prefer a pedal activated distortion and the clean sound is louder with the black ice!

Try Jaycar mate, should have these

take them or send them the specs you want

I think Pest may have tried one...

Have put one of these in a build and ripped it out two weeks later....
Over rated IMHO.... Much better to use a pedal...

Ideally you would use a Schottky diode with a low forward voltage. Something like a 1N5819. You can get these at Jaycar. You could also try a 1N4148 or 1N914.
To be honest, I've tested this simple circuit and it sounded like crap. It also will reduce the output of your guitar significantly. But it only costs a couple of bucks to try so have a go, you may be happy with it. But I doubt it.

Eshays,
Can I recommend http://www.diyguitarpedals.com.au/sh...=index&cPath=2 - have dealt with them before and they're happy to answer any stupid questions I had. Also fast to ship, etc.... Shipping is not too bad - from memory ~$3. Also an Aussie bloke who's giving it a bit of a go!

Thanks for the replies guys!! I've used guitars with the black ice mod before and I can live with the volume drop and get decent tones from it.
