My first build, it seems to be coming along OK. I am liking the overall colour but I am not totally happy with the way the clear is going on though. I have 5 coats of clear on so far with a light sand between, it doesn't seem to go on very level. I am thinking I might try a spray on coat. The back is pretty good but who is gonna see that?? I shall perservere!

Barney that looks sensational! And I'm not a Flying V fan!

looks good Barney, this is the 1st FVB I've seen. Stain looks like Feast Watson mahogany ?
What sort of clear have you been using ? There are some clearing experts on the forum that may be able to help
-
Right first time wokkaboy, the clear is Feast Watson as well.
-
no worries Barney, I haven't seen any colour like it so it is identifiable. So presuming the Feast Watson clear is a rag on job, are you laying the body flat or hanging it after application ? I've never tried the FW clear, so unsure if the thickness of it is causing and unlevel finish

The dude at the hardware told me not to use a rag (??) though I am considering an act of defiance and giving it a crack. I have ben brushing & hangin, but on the last coat I did the front & laid it down, then did the sides & back and laid it down. I have also considered thinning some down and trying that?
-
I'd cut it back first with 400 to 600 wet and dry, then thin it and rag it on....
-
Feast Watsons do a Wipe on Poly that goes on with a rag quite nicely (Minwax make one too). I've been clamping a guitar vertically and with 8 coats of wipe-on it is well on the way to a high gloss mirror finish (but will need a very light wet sand and polish at the end).
The nice thing about the wipe on is you don't have to thin it.
Are you using the wipe-on, or a brush on varnish?
Oh yeah, love the stain finish...looks very nice.
Cheers

Thanx guys, sounds like a couple of good options. Cheers.

Don't be afraid to rag - keep coats nice and thin and it'll look even better than it does now - and at the moment it looks like a real beast!
