ST-1 neck woes!

Hey guys,

Couple of queries about my neck on the ST-1. I'm concerned that there appears to be a very slight gap between the neck and body when fitted slotted into the neck recess. Is this normal, and is it something that will iron out when I screw the neck in, or can I fix it by sanding it into shape?

Also I think there's a slight issue with the 11th fret - there's a random bit of fret metal poking out from the top of the fret. I hope it'll be easy to get off!

I'll try and post some pictures of what I mean tomorrow!

There is often a slight gap between the very end of the neck and body on the ST-1's, this is normal and is usually covered by the pickguard. There is some more info about it (and some pics) in the posts in this thread.

Post some pics of the 'random bit of fret metal' and we'll see what's what.

Ah yeah thanks for that, that sort of gap is exactly what I'm dealing with!

The fret fault is obviously a manufacturing defect, but I hope I can sort it out myself, pics are attached

Ok. The tang ( bit that goes into the frets saw-cut slot ) on the fret wire is distorted or bent. Only solution is to remove the fret wire ( ONLY if you feel competent to do this or you'll stuff up the face of the board ) and pop in a new one of same size. You will really need the tools for this to cut the fret wire cleanly and then file it down to the edges of the fingerboard. This is often a luthiers job as it is not as easy at it seems. If you're in Sydney, get down to Sydney Set Ups in Annandale just down from the now defunked Jacksons Rare Guitar shop which is now a bicycle shop. I wouldn't be concerned about the neck to body gap. Looks OK to me and the scratch plate will cover this anyway.

Yeah I most certainly do not feel competent enough not to screw that one up! I'm in Perth. Hopefully Pitbull can help out, but if not I've got a mate who's a real luthier who I'm sure would be happy to have a look at it! :)

Hi tkimber100, we can certainly sort this out for you at no cost, under warranty, however, it means posting the neck in to us and then waiting for it be repaired and posted back. So, I guess it's up to you, if you want it done quickly, then I'm sure you're luthier friend can sort this out pretty easily.
