Hi all,
Would love to try Dingotone on my new build but it seems to be currently out of stock, wondering if anyone associated with Pit Bull guitars might know when it is due back in stock, or perhaps someone has some that they are willing to sell, trade, swap or something.
Open to all suggestions.

I'm sure that Dingotone will not be restocked by PBG. Tim is considering some other stain/finish options to put on the site.
FYI, Dingotone did sometimes have an issue with drying and would stay tacky!
+1 on hardening problems. Also instability in the colors. I wanted to use Dingotone on my first build, PB was unable to ship it overseas. The lack of toxicity and all natural qualities really appealed to me. I would say that I dodged a bullet, but I found some other ways to screw up the finish ;-) Meanwhile, there are more stories of problems on the forum than good outcomes.Quote:

That's a shame, I watched the U Tube vids and was impressed with the colour and the colour range. Will find something else for my next build.
With all respect to PBG though, I would like to suggest that these products be removed from their site rather than be marked out of stock. Have the same problem with a Kit that i wanted that will not be available any longer but Tim has been kind enough to include a one off in as a special order, yet this kit is marked as out of stock on the web site.
As a consumer and a fan of PBG, it's disappointing to think that items will be available in the future only to learn that they wont be back at all. Just saying. No offence intended to anyone.
Your message has been passed along to Tim. I know there are other based products that folks have had some success with for staining. Personally, I like the ones that TD does.
I know a lot of folks use Keda dies, and you get colors to mix with alcohol or water from them. I tried them recently mixed with shellac, and they seemed to stain (or, I guess it was technically a tint) well. I ended up not using them but that was more about a lack of satisfaction with the colors I was getting than with the quality of the dies. More about how I should have been paying more attention to the "color wheel" instruction in art classes long, long ago ;-) I have seen people using RIT clothing dies, but I don't know how available those are in Australia.
Hi Fender, I used Tru Oil tinted with Mixol on my first build and I think It came out okay. Wondering now if I can spray Nitro over the top, some advice said yes, others said no. I think the colours of Dingotone appealed and it seemed like an easy application watching the You tube vids.
Have decided to go with tinted nitro on my next build seeing as my beautiful wife bought me an airbrush kit. Gonna take some practice first though I think.
RIT dye is readily available in Australia - I know "Spotlight" stocks both powder and liquid dyes.Quote:

With Shellac - I have recently come across a number of website where they tint the shellac with alcohol based Inks.... or stain the wood with a mix of ink and "Metho" (denatured alcohol).... but the shellac seems to be what Dongotone was trying to be.........
Another option Ive come across is to mix in some artist colour with the oil you use (Danish Oil or Tru Oil etc).
When I find something that works I try to stick with it. I don't know Mixol, but it's hard to argue with good results ;-)Quote:

To questions of "can I put X over Y" I generally think it's safest to either (a) try on a test piece and see, or (b) try it on a guitar and be prepared to do something else if the answer is no. Even that is not for sure. As I have found out with some General Finishes products it can take a while for problems to show up.
When in doubt, my go-to is to (a) make sure the under coat is 100% cured before putting anything over it, and (b) putting a couple of coats of platina shellac over the top.
From what I gather, Dingotone used natural oils of some undisclosed sort, which may have been part of the reason for the instability. I have tinted shellac, and brushed it on. The results on my test pieces were quite good. The only reason I didn't do it on a guitar is that I was not getting a color I liked...but if you do, I see no reason why this couldn't work. Most people who do this on the web seem to spray, which should be even better.
I tried Keda and "metho" (here we say denatured alcohol) and it worked fine. Tinted shellac is mostly metho, anyway.

As stated above, I'm not going to be bringing back that line of stains and other products.
I've agonized about bringing back DingoTone into the fold, as Mr DingoBass himself wasn't willing to continue operating as a supplier, and I was strongly considering buying that branding and recipes etc. from him and just running it myself - however, my lack of time to do that work myself, as well as the negative feedback I had seen meant that I've ultimately had to abandon that idea.
I'm hoping to stock a line of stains again at some stage, but it's been a bit on the back-burner for a while now. Watch this space, I guess?
