I'm looking for a set of rattle can filler primers, paints and clears that I can use for my first finishing job
Ideally I want ones that can be sanded between coats so I can achieve a high gloss finish and something that will harden rock solid so I can play the guitar without denting it
Anyone have recommendations?
I've done a couple with SCA colour & clear acrylic rattle cans with decent results.
But I have found the acrylic sticking to the foam padding on my guitar stands which is not a good thing.
These were hung for quite some time before cutting and polishing so it is not as if the finish was still gassing off.
Unfortunately my experience with the spray on filler/primer has not been good either. I used Dupli-Color Automotive 2-in-1. I tend to spray outdoors in a pretty humid climate, and that may be the problem. First time I used it was under their automotive paint. Second time was under my go-to rattle can paint (MTN95). In both cases there were some adhesion problems.
Based on my experience if you are using a tight grain wood, MTN95 does not require primer, and fills about as well as filler/primer. It is no more expensive than most rattle can primers, adheres to the wood as least as well as it adheres to primer. So, I have stopped using primer, and just do an additional coat or two of MTN95.
For open grain woods, I can't recall anyone on the forum finding spray on filler sufficient (me included). I have tried a variety of fillers, and have gotten the best results with AquaCoat Clear. although it usually requires many coats to f
I haven't used TimberMate, but that seems to be the go-to filler for most folks here. Many of the cheaper water-based fillers or drywall compound I have used have not worked particularly well. Sawdust and sealers has worked somewhat, but don't get me all the way there. Bondo works pretty well, but only if a solid color is going over it, and takes a lot of sanding. I am experimenting with Famowood Latex Wood Filler which is supposed to be similar to TimberMate but without the strong smell.
In general the fillers that are solvent based fillers shrink less than waterbased, but give off more VOCs and are a bit more toxic. The water based fillers tend to be less toxic, but shrink a bit more so need more coats.
the best way to go is put 2 or 3 coats of sanding sealer thats the important one to do then do any filling if needed, DONT USE WOOD STOP FILLER or any water based filler car bog is ok, then give 3 coats of acrylic primer filler let dry then sand it with 600 W&D then give it another 3 coats sand with 800-1000grit W&D try not to sand through the primer when you happy with the body you've got it nice and flat then you can put your colour 4 coats should do it for you now you at the point of which clear you want if you do a acrylic clear do 6 coats then sand it with 1000grit sand out all the orange peel'then another 6 wait till paints cured
a couple of things to keep in mind acrylic lacquer try work cleen and use a tack rag before you spray you don't want shit in the paint and you must wait a good week before you sand and polish lacquer clear, you can use 2k clear its better in every way but you paint it differently if you go 2k rattle can post here and ill tell you how to spray it to get the best results, using acrylic lacquer the colour paint will work well for you as dave said supercheap is fine for a primer filler I've used their paint many many times if you take your time you will get a professional finish even using rattle can

Thanks for the write up! What brands would you recommend for the colour paints then?
pending on colour you want to do a few paints I've used are if its a straight colour like white, black, silver the polycraft from super cheap are ok if you want something more trick Dupli-Color all these guitar were done with a rattle can even the clear but you can go into an auto shop and pick a colour you like but shows you can do a really nice job with a rattle can if you need any advice just askQuote:

Those paint jobs of yours look incredible! That viper mica purple is actually exactly the shade I want for another future build I have in mind. As for using the duplicolor cans, could you share your process for using them after you've already sealed and primed the guitar?
How many coats of the colour do you use before using a clear coat, and how long are you waiting before spraying each coat? Are you also sanding each layer too? Thank so much!
And I also want to ask. What sanding sealer would you recommend? And how long should I wait before sanding the polycraft clear coat? Do you do any final sanding/buffing as the last step?
