After much thought, I opted to go with brushed nickel on this guitar. Had it made to order from diamond cut graphics on eBay. Jeff was most helpful. Albeit pricey than most, I’m happy with the end product.

What I would like next is a technique to remove the film and just leave the toner to lacquer over...

Acetone will react with quite a lot of finishes (definitely nitro), so I'd suggest only using it directly on wood. Or at least first use a test piece of wood that you've treated with the same finish.
