View Full Version : What's going on with some photos not displaying?

Simon Barden

Recently there seems to be a lot of pics which aren't displaying, but showing as "attachment abxyz". When clicked on, there's a message that says "Invalid Attachment specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator".

Getting these on posts from experienced members as well as new ones.

E.g. http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=9285&p=178638&viewfull=1#post178638

Any reason we know for this?

I reckon it's due to a forum 'upgrade'.
Therefore two steps forward and one step back.
Started to get a notice when a new post has been uploaded.

cheers, Mark.

Seems okay here...

That's a remotely hosted photo. Seems to be a problem with ones uploaded and hosted on the forum.

Seems to be working now?

Simon Barden
04-02-2019, 09:09 PM
I can see that as a thumbnail, but what about the one of Frankie's that I put the link up for? The forum won't allow you to upload images that are too big (pixels or memory), and doesn't seem to have an issue with remotely hosted images. Yet the one in FW's post has an attachment number which says to me that it's been uploaded and so accepted.

That happened to me on a reply last week, Simon. Posted a photo with my reply, but it wouldn't show in the post other than "attachmentxyz".

I still personally think Imgur is the way to go. I have the app on my phone. So I photograph and upload, then when I sit down to post they are all there in my library for linking. Works for me anyway.

Simon Barden

It still doesn't answer why something that was working with the forum now seems to be at least partly broken.

Simon Barden
05-02-2019, 04:28 PM
FW's latest post with three pictures has them all failing.

It's not something to do with the switch from the main forum using HTTP to HTTPS is it?

It's not something to do with the switch from the main forum using HTTP to HTTPS is it?

Probably. I had the same issue when I uploaded a photo day before last.
I had to go back and edit the post.
Delete the 'attachment' line and then re-upload the jpeg.

cheers, Mark.

Testing alternative attachment manager

I'm looking into it. I don't think it is related to SSL as it seems to have started before this. In the mean time I've turned off the advanced attachment manager in favour of the more basic interface. This might help identify a root cause...

I uploaded the picture from my PC to the site. The picture was displaying on the screen when I previewed my post, but now shows as a link (which at least works). But previously I would be able to see the picture on the screen once posted.

Darren
05-02-2019, 05:09 PM
Yeah - I see that. Not really a preferred option.

Darren

Wondering if it is to do with image size ...

Simon Barden
05-02-2019, 05:55 PM
Maybe. My previously uploaded photos displayed as smaller thumbnails but without the paper-clip, the 'Attached Thumbnails' description and the slightly darker grey box around them.

That pic I last uploaded was 1500 x 967 pixels before uploading and 233.6 kB.

When I tried to insert a pic in a reply to another post a few days ago, it showed the image in the editor, but wouldn't let me resize it. The image sizing box popped up, but then immediately disappeared. When I posted the reply, it showed as a link, which is now broken.

By contrast, I uploaded some pictures to my own build diary yesterday, and everything seemed to work just fine.

Using Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and Firefox Quantum 65.0, if that's any help.

Thanks for the info.

I've made some changes - let me know of any continuing issues.
Many thanks!

Hey Darren, Just saw in the JMA 6 baritone thread that the pics still aren't displaying properly.

Darren
06-02-2019, 11:58 AM
Cheers. At least they were clickable/viewable  I edited the post to show them images in line.

Not sure why it is only showing links to attached images yet ... still looking. Please keep reporting here for the moment.
Thanks!

Could someone try and post an inline image here? I just made another change which *may* resolve things ...

Testing testing testing

EDIT: I can click on this one and see it, but when I go back over to the JMA6 baritone thread I'm still getting and error. Alan mentions that he can click and follow the links there.

Pretty odd.

This is a hot link back to the one I just uploaded above... works fine. Pretty darn bizarre.

So it seems like you can view things that you have personally uploaded but no one else can?

So as SM said. You can see your own upload, but nobody else can.

Cheers, Mark.

Darren

Cheers. There is something a bit whack going on. The last couple test images that have been posted here uploaded to server OK, but where not associated with the post/thread. So the person who uploaded them could see them (as they were in their own temp personal upload area) but others could not as they were not public as far as the forums system is concerned.

I manually fixed this on SM's and your posts and they seem OK now.

I've changed back to the less sophisticated uploads manager - it would be cool if someone could add another image to this thread and see if that behaves better. Cheers!
