I think you can flip em to put the out of phase

No, you can physically flip them but the polarity remains the same. The only difference is that if tapped, the single coil that's active is in a different place. Also, if you raise the screw pole-pieces significantly and set the pickup lower to compensate (to give a mismatched output from the two coils which is supposed to sound more 'open' and seems quite popular at the moment), then flipping the pickup around will give a very slightly different sound as the stronger signal will be from a different part of the strings - but still no polarity change.


To reverse the polarity, you'd need to swap the ground and signal wire connections, so that red is connected to ground and green is the signal wire to the volume pot. Or you could take the pickup apart and flip the magnets over (rotated 180° around their long axis) and put them back again. That would also do the trick - which is what happened to the Peter Green Les Paul neck pickup. Yes, the pickup was also physically rotated (for most of its life anyway), but the 'Peter Green' sound was due to the magnet polarity swap on that pickup during a rewind.

The standard 'bridge pup screw poles nearest the bridge and neck pup screw poles nearest the neck' arrangement was picked on by Gibson purely for what they thought looked best on the guitar, and has generally been copied by everyone else ever since.
