November Guitar of the Month (for Guitars and Basses finished in October 2017)

Enter your finished guitar or bass here to be judged for the Pit Bull Guitars November 2017 Guitar of the Month.

Please remember:

For Guitars or Basses finished on (or before) the end of October 2017

One guitar/bass per member per month
It must be a Pit Bull Guitars kit (mods and upgrades acceptable)
Guitar or Bass must be finished and playable

We need at least 4 photos:
· full guitar shot from the front;
· close up of the body finish;
· shot of the back of the guitar; and
· close up of the headstock (please, no brand name logos)

Please post your photos in this thread. If you are having issues posting photos on the forum, please email them to brendan (at) pitbullguitars (dot) com

Please note: This competition is open to amateur guitar builders only. If you are making and selling guitars for profit, you are ineligible. Also while there are some stunning guitars around - you never know what the judges are looking for, so we encourage anyone who's built a Pitbull during the month to enter!

Competition for November closes at the end of October 2017.

The sorts of things we judge on include:
· How well has the body and neck been prepared
· Is the choice of finish for the style of guitar appropriate
· How well has the finish been applied
· How well has all the hardware, pickups, etc, been installed
· Does it have the "Wow Factor"
· Which guitar would you make a beeline for in a guitar shop. That is, which one would you most like to take home.

BTW - remember that the winner is invited to be a guest judge the following month!

My first build. It's the STA-1M kit with s-s-h configuration in the pickups. I painted it using Accent flat black spray paint and the front is covered with sections of Batman comics (blasphemy!). Glossed with Accent quick dry spray gloss (lots of it! About 2 cans just on the body!). I cut the head stock to go with the bottom of the Batman logo by hand. I got the Pro Rock Gear strap locks on it and matched the guitar with a Batman strap I picked up on eBay.

My first build from a JMA-1 kit. Only upgrade are locking tuners and a Tusq nut. Finished in Rustoleum over Automotive hi fill and primer. Was a lot of fun and a great learning experience.

update: The machine head that came with the kit kept breaking the e string so they will be updated to the locking heads.
Lesson: spend a little extra to save pain

2 excellent entries to kick off the month. Well done Scot and Sonic, both look awesome.
Scot presume you mean the thin E string kept snapping ? Where was it snapping at the bridge or nut end ?

The Red Widow is all stock except for the self 3D printed TRC and the Q-Parts knobs that replaced the plastic speedknobs.

Hi everybody,
i tried the EXA-1 Ash Explorer as my 2nd build with a guitarkit.
I truoiled Body and Neck as well as the headstock, filed the frets, dyed the fretboard black, made a new Decal out of Overheadfoil.
Changed the Pickups to P90 from Warmann (UK) and replaced the Knobs with wooden ones. Then i robbed my old LesPaul for the Rythm/Treble sign.
Had a loooooooot of fun while oiling and oiling and oiling and oiling....summed up to about 12 or 13 Layers of truoil...

After getting a few compliments on my build diary I though it might be worth adding this SGM-1 build to this months competition.

It has the kit Mahogany body and neck
FW Japan Brown stain with satin semi-gloss TO finish
Grover 102-18C machine head tuners
Set of Belcat BH-20 PU's added to the kit electronics
Ox Bone nut
Custom headstock 'plate' with engraved name in Golden colour.

This is a Pit Bull Guitars TB4 kit. In the style of a Thunderbird bass guitar......not a copy. She is the DOWNUNDERBIRD.

Firstly let me say how good the kit is. THE BEST QUALITY KIT I HAVE RECEIVED FROM PBG....OUT OF THE BOX AWESOME.

I had so much fun making this. The advice on the forums is irreplaceable....Wazkelly, PabloPepper, WokkaBoy and the ultimate wizard of wiring Weirdbits I thank you so very much for your ideas, advice and support.

This is a major part of my sanity tools now and without you guys it would easily become a source of greater frustration and stress, and not the relief it is too me. Thank you all...Ads and DB too...you guys rock. :)

TB-4 kit.....

1. UBeaut water based stains of my concoction.
2. Tru-oil all over for about 20 coats.
3. Wipe-On poly over the top after 1 month curing time.
4. Stock Bridge. Straplocks top and bottom. A $4.00 Fender P Bass style thumb rest...makes it so much easier to play.
5. Black Tele style jack socket. Switchcraft socket.
6. Copper all over everything...cat struggles to walk now. 2 x Push Pull 500k (Alpha Brand) pots in both pickup volume position. Stock 500k B style Tone pot. Stock green ceramic .223 uf capacitor on tone pot. All vintage push back wiring everywhere.
7. Stock humbucker pickups...yep the Chinese numbers. Split using the wiring diagram from Weirdbits...thanks mate.
8. Graphite Nut. (First time I have attacked a nut with the files. This one came will basically a dent where the string goes...so had to do it all.)
9. Stock tuners.
10. Custom Truss Rod cover from PabloPepper.....love your work mate.
11. My hand carved take on the headstock shape....rasped and filed and sanded.
12. Black stain...Ubeaut on headstock face.
13. Attempted burst on body and neck....orange core colour and cedar around the edges. (The burst looks really lame in photos....way better without flash...dodgie lighting and in real life....I hate it in photos.)

EDIT:- I forgot the knobs. They are copies of the original BELL Knobs and fit the metric shafts of the pots I used. They feel great and look good.)

Finally, I was allowed by my parent to build a bass. I've been nagging for it for a few years and now that I'm starting a study in Design, they thought it would be a great addition to my portfolio. So I started designing several basses, I still have ideas to build about 8 different basses. But this custom idea, combining a Thunderbird and Telecaster was "the one".
After a long wait ( it was only 8 weeks but I couldn't wait to start building!) the kit arrived in the Netherlands and we had a slight problem. A few things weren't there... we e-mailed Adam and the problem was solved in a wink of an eye, great service.

The build got a headstart with the sanding which really went well for a first time.
After a few layers of paint it already had the wow effect and, while I had my holiday, I got up early to finish it. In the meanwhile, I was designing a name-based "brand" logo for the headstock and I came up with the current design with its name Bluebird. Installing the hardware and soldering the electronics wasn't a big deal and at the end of the day I had my finished bass. I'm really happy with Bluebird, and it sounds amazing.
I am sorry for the not so top quality photographs, I had to crop them to upload: enjoy them as much as I do!

hahaha THREE TBird basses in one month! It is so definitely the right shape for a bass.
This one has taken me 6 or 7 months to finish and is one of those projects that kept fighting me all the way, nothing major just lots of little things going wrong- but i'm really happy with the final result.
There was a little bit of body work to shape and thin the top rear corner so it sits better and a lot of filling and sanding to blend in the raised centre section which is just a couple of mms of wood glued on the top of the body. I also routed the neck pickup shape for the P and added a battery compartment on the back. I didn;t use the battery compartment in the end because I changed my mind half way through and went for passive pickups - an EMG P in the neck which is reasonable and a Lace Bass Bar in the bridge (which is lovely!), with basic V/V/T controls. All the cavities etc. are fully shielded with copper foil. Hipshot ultralight machine heads and a Hipshot Kickass bridge along with some decent strings keep everything nice and solid. I also put Paua marker dots in and moved the strap lock attachment to the neck plate so it balances better.
Most of the work went into the finish, it was bad timing trying to paint it over the depths of winter south of Canberra but I'm really happy with the way it turned out. Undercoat, gloss black and clear where all spray cans from Supercheap Auto, with lots of sanding in between. For the Aztec calendar design I used a stencil and airbrush. The whole lot was then polished with car polish.
The truss rod cover was cut by Pablo with some custom decals. The pickguard I cut out of 3mm thick acrylic that has a metallic cloth or something embedded - it looks great in the light.
Anyway, pictures:

Last "real" T Bird I saw was owned by Rob Bailey who played bass on ACDC High Voltage as a session guy before Mark Evans was enlisted.

Rob replaced me in my last gigging band in 1981 when I decided I needed to be a husband and father instead of living the life and getting divorced again, don't know where he is today but he was an excellent player and a lovely bloke.

He stood in with us a few times when I picked up the 6 stringer and the T Bird certainly is a solid beast sonically compared to my 30" Yamaha bass at the time.

Good to see the T Bird making a resurgence.

What have you used to fill the fret slots looks like grain filler ? Some thin wood strips or thin white binding would have looked better.

Thanks, The photos don't do this bass justice, but unfortunately its a damp and rainy UK October so I've not been able to get a decent shot with natural light so far. I do agree that the knobs are larger than I would ideally have had them, but I was unable to find a matching set of 5 any smaller.

Ive used mahogany plastic wood to fill the frets and then hand sanded the fretboard to an ultra smooth finish, before treating it with lemon oil.

Last entry for the month - received by email Monday 30 October from SJDavis75 - STA-1M.

Hi Brendan, please find attached pics for submission to Nov GOTM.

This is one of my latest builds which will be given to my step daughter for her birthday in early November. I call it the Doily-Caster and I think you can see why. The paint job and airbrushed Candy Skull was done by myself. This guitar has all the stock parts as it is going to be a learner's guitar. I think the black hardware and Black pearl Pick Guard sets it off nicely.

Thanks for your consideration...

Great vision. Love the headstock. Looks like you needed to grainfill the body to get an even finish on the back.
Holy Original ideas Batman! A great concept and well done.I've done decoupage before and it's hard to get a smooth finish, the head stock idea is well executed too.
There is just so much to like here. Great theme. Well done on the decoupage, alas I would have liked to have seen it go all the way around the perimeter and not cut off under the pickguard for continuity sake. The headstock shaping is a masterstroke. Fantastic effort.
creative use of comic books and matching headstock, nice theme
Great concept and a fun looking guitar. I think the back needed a little bit more time and love however.
Well done, an awesome theme guitar. These always appeal and this is no exception. Nicely build guitar and very nice work on the comic additions. A well executed guitar that has mega appeal.
POW! Instant appeal to batfans, the comics work a treat to really create something unique. Great headstock shape with the incorporation of the logo. Nicely put together and a well planned build. I think the white pickguard may be a little too stark for the artwork, and I'd love to see what it looks like with a matt black one instead. Great build.
Lot of work has gone into getting the top done. Not an easy job with the elbow cut curve and applying paper without creasing. Back still showing signs of Ash grain under the black paint and dot stickers can now be removed from back of tuners. Original headstock shape design keeps with the Batman theme.

Love the colour. It's a shame the tuners aren't parallel, otherwise it's pretty much perfect.
A nice clean first build. proof that you don't need to spend a fortune to end up with a nice axe from a kit.
Super tidy guitar. Lovely looking paint job. Well thought out scheme, with all the fine details buttoned.
Clean and clear. I wish to do one of these projects soon.
classic colour scheme and nice personal touches, a great first build
A classy build that will have classic appeal. Tuners and nut are a smart upgrade, and that surf look never dies, nice job.
Great looking offset with a classic colour combo that's instantly familiar. Beautiful finish with nice upgrades and great quality overall. Definitely one you want to pick up and play.
Nice colour and shiny finish that looks like melted gelato ice cream. Overcame plenty of challenges and demo video showed how good it sounds too.

Kick LP-1Q
Amazing job. You saw your vision right through to the end and were left with a beautiful guitar.
A very very tasteful build. Great work on the quilted top. I do think some more sanding would have got the finish smoother but it's still a great looking axe.
Fantastic looking instrument. Love the colour and the burst, brings out the quilt nicely. Truss cover matching the headstock is a great touch. A bit too much orange peel in the clear coats evident for my liking.
Stunning looking guitar. Would have no problem adding this to my collection.
these quilted tops look excellent and you made the most of it Kick, sweet build!
These are always stunning guitars and this is no exception. The red burst looks deep and moody. All black hardware was a great choice and the whole guitar presents nicely. Very cool TRC and the whole thing shows that persistence pays off.
That quilt is simply stunning. The colour choice and finish has really done it justice and the hardware and knobs compliment it perfectly. Great headstock shape and matching custom TRC. A stunning build worth all the time and effort to achieve it. Well done.
Been closely watching this labour of love come to life. Very sultry dark & stormy Red/Black quilted top looks stunning. Like the personalised headstock shape and 3d printed truss rod cover & red capped control knobs.

SueBue EXA-1
Great job. Simple & honest.
CLEAN! A classic example of how clean a kit can look in just clear coat. Interesting pick up choice for a EX, I like that.
Damn, that's sexy. Nice take on an EX, instant appeal. The P90s are different and very cool. Beautifully finished to accent the wood. Top work.
Simple and clean. Nice finish, just not my style.
nice natural ash finish can't beat an explorer in any finish
Very subtle mods that add up to a really cool and understated guitar that must really rock. Love the p90 upgrade, they really set it off. This just flows nicely and I really like the look of it.
A beautiful natural finish that really works with the black hardware accented with the chrome of the switch and pickup bodies. Simple, clean, excellent. I really like this a lot.
Natural finish helped to show off the abundance of Ash grain on offer. Tend to think set neck guitars should be same colour all over and Maple neck may have blended better with a light stain. Personalised headstock decal looks good.

Marcel SGM-1
Love the headstock shape. Great gloss finish. Could have benefited from repositioning some of those tuner holes.
Another nice clean natual finish done with taste and good workmanship.Nice work on the head stock shape too
Gorgeous grain! Great looking SG, a real classic vibe. Put together with attention to detail and some fine upgrades.
Very nice.
nicely finished SG with matching headstock shape. Classic colour scheme looks great
This is a very classy SG, love the mods - nice pickups, great headstock detail, great nut and tuners. This has a tough look and would not be out of place on stage in a hard rock band. Nice execution and looks stunning. Terrific work.
I love how the colour has worked with the grain on this build, especially the neck. It really appeals to me. Well finished with excellent upgrades, a really classy bit of kit. The headstock shape echoes the body nicely but the photos make it look a little too aggressive for my taste. I suspect it's more subdued in person. I love this build and would be happily reaching for it at any opportunity.
High Voltage rocker this one. Love everything about it right down to the traditional SG truss rod cover.

Ozzbike TB-4
Great colour. Love the custom truss rod cover
I really like the finish on this, its different. Nice work on the head stock shape too, bonus points for taking the time and effort to upgrade the stock electricals.
Nice colours, love, love, love the pickguard! Assembled well and a joy to behold. It might just be the pic, but the headstock looks a little green. Interesting.
nice colour scheme goes well in this shape, another top looking build Ozz.
Nice classic finish.
The downunderbird is an awesome bass, just love all the additions, awesome scratchplate and other additions. It looks amazing and hope it plays the same.
This instantly grabs me. It may be an old-school classic with the style and colours, but it's a classic for a reason. Anything that makes me think 'I have to build one' is a success in my book. Great colours and burst, nice combination of stock and upgraded parts, and excellent custom TRC. I love everything about this. The only thing I'd change is maybe a slightly smaller logo, but I still love it. Well done.
Three TB-4’s to judge this month with this one a good replica of traditional tobacco burst. I would gladly make room for it to come and stay at my place, permanently. Top effort with upgrades and attention to detail.

And 2/2...

Marjinn TB-4
Absolutely love the colour & the customisations. If you are doing without a truss rod cover, it is advisable to stain the adjustment channel as well.
This is cool, a break from the usual way we see T-Birds done (bass or otherwise), the blue and chrome works well as does the logo.
Um,wow. Never seen one quite like this! Love the custom options. Super colour and a fantastic logo. Needs a truss cover though!
(would go 11/10, but I don’t want Jennifer Hawkins getting jealous) Absolute stunner. Hats off to you!
very cool colour and paint job with some nice touches, sexy looking thunderbird well done
An original concept that just turn out amazing, great work here, it’s really eye catching . Love the headstock, the tele mosh mash of parted, but it goes together very nicely. Great job.
Definitely a month for Thunderbirds, and this one is a unique variation. Such an unusual combination of features but it results in something special. The colour works better than I would have imagined, I quite like it, although the body could have perhaps used a little more prep. It's strange and messes with my idea of a Thunderbird, but still compelling. I like it.
Another TB-4 done with a twist. Colour is really cool but looks like it could have done with a bit more sanding and priming. Tele controls works for me as do the retro looking PUP’s. Cool fret markers too.

BillB TB-4
A lot of thought, design & effort has gone into this bass. I really like it.
Did I miss a special on TB4's? ;D Again some very original ideas going on, the air brush work is a nice touch, well done too. Lots of nice upgrades with the pick ups and electronics. My only criticism (and I'm really being picky) is maybe too many screws in the center pick guard.Very creative all round.
Bloody hell another TB and another approach altogether! Some excellent touches here with the decals and custom scratchplate. Really deep gloss achieved, well done. Overall superb job, BillB!
Amazing finish and artwork.
stunning TB build Bill, love the air brush, pickguard and truss rod cover the whole colour scheme works so well. Love the mods you have done
Another stunner of the TBird, beautiful execution, a great finish, lots of other work, a great bass all round.
The finish and features of this beautiful bass are just wild. The pickup combo, beautiful Aztec calendar, custom TRC and central pickguard with a nice gloss topping it off make it something special. The pickguard looks great but I'm not sure I'm entirely sold on it. Regardless, another fantastic and unique Thunderbird.
Third TB-4 with some serious customisation and upgrades done. Love the motif but not a fan of red pearloid scratch plate and thought black one ply may have worked better. Cool personalised headstock decal on truss rod cover too.

Rupert IB-6S
Made the most of a beautiful top on this bass
Lots of work done on that neck, looks fantastic too. My only criticism is the knobs seem a bit fat and therefore crowded.
A very nice example of an IB6. Digging the custom truss cover and wooden knobs. Lovely.
Don’t think even my fat hands could navigate around that neck. Great looking simple clean finish.
build looks great but pity some of the pics are quite dark. See if you can find smaller wooden knobs and this will be a kick butt bass!
Wow it sure is bass month - they must of run out of TBass kits... This is also a great job, classy with the black, these always looks good and this is proof. Well done on a bass that will always look good.
These beasts always look stunning and this is no exception... and fretless no less. A nice natural finish doing the spalt justice and a great overall look. The knobs look a little over-sized for the close cluster of the controls and could perhaps be a touch darker to match the fretboard's colour better (hard to tell from the photos). A very nice build.
Perfect blend of colours from top to bottom which is not easy with different bits of timber species to work with. Funky personalised truss rod cover. Phat timber grain control knobs blend in well.

3BBass LP-1S
Great job. Its hard for LPs to stand out because they are so ubiquitous. But you have really made the most of this one.
Definitely a month for natural finishes. Super clean and the black hardware really suits it. Nice upgrades on the pickups too.
Gorgeous spalt handled subtly. All is right with the universe.
Another axe I would have no issue adding to my collection.
nicely finished to show the spalt and a cool original headstock shape. Get a nicer truss rod cover to complete the package. Nice contrast with the dark back/sides.
These are great guitars. This one is one of them. Really classy , always nice with black hardware, and the addition of the active EMGs will give a surprise to those expecting the traditional LP sound. Well done.
A very nice natural looking LP. A fairly subtle spalt compared to some, but treated nicely with the choice of finsih. Interesting and appealing headstock shape, with nice upgrades to compliment the build. The colour of the back and neck looks fantastic too. However, the shape and colour of the wooden knobs doesn't quite work for me. Lighter or darker maybe, not sure.
Understated elegance. How cool are those timber control knobs plus upgraded PUP’s and tuners. Has an antique look from the back.

SJDavis75 STA-1M
Day of the dead skull, doilies and a great purple. Is this guitar a social commentary on aged care facilities? Definitely a unique idea, but it all kind of clashes in my head.
Let me start at the neck and work down...
Headstock shape,cool!
Colour, Cool.
artwork freakin cool!
I would have gone with a white pearl pick guard but thats personal taste.
one lucky learner to get this rig! Nice work.
Holy cow. A little OTT for me, but a well put together kit nonetheless. Some cool techniques going on in the finish.
Great concept, reminds me of my Nanna, if she had tattoos and listened to punk, which she didn’t.
different theme with the paisley design but nicely executed and pickguard works well. Nice air brush job.
The ultimate chick rock guitar. This is a great move from the more traditional ST kits we are used to. Great work here, nice colour choices and some amazing airbrush work. You and your daughter should both be proud of this one, very nice.
My head explodes every time I look at this. Beautifully finished, but so busy. Nice colours and great artwork, I'm sure your step-daughter will love it. The black pearloid pickguard and black hardware work nicely, and really compliment the art. Strangely, I think I'd also like to see colour on the headstock face. Great build.
Halloween themed lilac coloured Strat. Lot of work done with air brushing the top and agree the black trimmings work well too.

Well done all! And big ups to BillB and Kick! Truly sexy guitars that deserve the accolades and hopefully some stage time!

I’ve been telling my other half that I’d like to build a bass next, and I was considering a T-bird 6 string too. This month has certainly convinced me that the T-bird bass is the way to go with plenty of inspiration.

Looking forward to squaring off against you for the GOTY-17 BillB!! (and others if it’s a thing)

Congrats again to all.

WOW, thank you very, very much! With so many brilliant builds entered this month that is a serious honour.

Huge congratulations to Kick and every entrant this month. I got lucky on the day, but everyone has done a fantastic job and has made their build something special. Most importantly, everyone seems to have had a lot of fun with their builds!

& it's great to see so many basses - but there should be even more TBird's ;)

ps - This also turned a rather ordinary monday into a very cool day!

Ha ha Brendan, the comments on mine are hilarious and is as if they know me. The Aged Care comment is spot on...I do actually work in aged care!! Its not until I read the comments that it occurred to me that maybe subliminally I was channelling that in some way.....again very funny and thanks to all the judges for their input!!

Congrats to Billb & Kick plus all other entrants.

The standard was so high this month that there would have been very little separating the judges scores across a vast majority.
