View Full Version : Grounding Question, need help!

Hey all, I'm building a TL 1TB...first build...
the schematic I have shows I need to run a ground to bridge, on another builder's thread he had a hole that was drilled from the control cavity to the hole for the right (as you look at it) saddle support where the grounding wire was to go.
I don't have a hole drilled from the control cavity or from the bridge humbucker cavity...

I was an electrician in the Navy about 30 years ago and wasn't a good one at that, but I can solder and read a schematic lol

Any suggestions on where to run the ground to or how to do it without drilling or having exposed wires?

Thanks.

Could I ground to the control plate? Would that work?

nope as far as i can tell the strings need to be grounded.. easiest way to do that is through the bridge..
if everythin else is wired up good the control plate should be grounded so running a wire from there to the bridge should work

Thanks, I'll just have to improvise where the hole wasn't drilled!

No way to do it without drilling a hole. As you say, there should have been one pre-drilled from the lower post hole to the control cavity.

So it looks like you'll have to drill a hole. which means you'll need to get the longest drill bit you can find, in order to be able to get the best angle without the drill getting in the way and increasing the angle of the hole unnecessarily. I'd look for a drill around 3/16" to 1/8" (about 2.5-3mm) in diameter, and at least 6" (15cm) long. You might get away with something a bit smaller than that, it all depends on your wire size.

Hopefully you haven't put the post support studs in yet.

If you have put the post in you could also run the wire to one of the screw holes at the back of the tremolo. You can use a very small wire. It just needs to make contact. You can get really long drill bits like this if you don't have one...

The hole will quite small and just inside the treble side bridge post hole, it may not be easy to see.

It should look like this (from my TL-1TB):

What did you decide to do?

I'm going to dremel a short channel from the bridge cavity to the saddle stud, I'll solder the ground to the stud, then backfill with wood putty, and paint...sucks because I've already painted and polished, but it may not be noticeable if I do it right.

Looking at Wierdy's photo, it would be a lot neater and easier to drill from the stud hole into the bridge pickup cavity.

If the posts are not in I'd do it that way. If the posts are in already, a hole from any point that will be covered by the tailpiece should do.
