September GOTM

Guitar of the month Comp time again! While for this there are no fortunes (just fame - or at least within the BYOGuitar fraternity) there's an opportunity for fame for the best guitar completed in August 2017.

August Guitar of the Month (for Guitars and Basses finished in August 2017)

Enter your finished guitar or bass here to be judged for the Pit Bull Guitars September 2017 Guitar of the Month.

Please remember:

For Guitars or Basses finished on (or before) 30 August 2017

One guitar/bass per member per month
It must be a Pit Bull Guitars kit (mods and upgrades acceptable)
Guitar or Bass must be finished and playable

We need at least 4 photos:
· full guitar shot from the front;
· close up of the body finish;
· shot of the back of the guitar; and
· close up of the headstock (please, no brand name logos)

Please post your photos in this thread. If you are having issues posting photos on the forum, please email them to brendan (at) pitbullguitars (dot) com

Please note: This competition is open to amateur guitar builders only. If you are making and selling guitars for profit, you are ineligible. Also while there are some stunning guitars around - you never know what the judges are looking for, so we encourage anyone who's built a Pitbull during the month to enter!

Competition for August closes 30 August 2017.

The sorts of things we judge on include:
· How well has the body and neck been prepared
· Is the choice of finish for the style of guitar appropriate
· How well has the finish been applied
· How well has all the hardware, pickups, etc, been installed
· Does it have the "Wow Factor"
· Which guitar would you make a beeline for in a guitar shop. That is, which one would you most like to take home.

I'm a personal fan of demos - no matter how simple - everyone likes to hear how an axe has turned out!

Also worth thinking - we've got a range of judges and who knows what they'll like (or not), so don't be afraid to enter your guitar - no matter whether you think it's good enough to win or not - on the day, you may get a couple to swing your way!

BTW - remember that the winner is invited to be a guest judge the following month!

My Pagan/Spanish Gold SH-1 build. All wired and playing great. Hardware upgraded with JCustom bridge and headpiece. Love this guitar. Body painted by Orangepaint Factory in Fredericton NB, Canada. I finished the neck with Walnut stain and Tru-oil and wax. Also a special detail on the back in memory of my Mom who passed away in 2014. Please accept for my entry for the September Guitar of the Month.

Looks great. Nice tribute to your mom.

In theory you're breaking the competition rules by not including a separate picture of the headstock - but I'm sure that in this case that rule can be waived! ;)

I'll throw my MKA-2 in the ring.
I guess some of you guys have worked out I like weird stuff so the Mossy had been calling my name for a while.
Mods are : Custom clear pickguard from Pabs to which I applied a clear print out of some 60's style surf monsters and tiki's. Then put a layer of white vinyl behind that. ( all done from the back). I also asked Pabs to switch the pick up positions so I had a humbucker at the bridge and a single coil at the neck. I figured I needed oddish pick ups and ordered a set of lip sticks from Guitar Fetish. The humbucker splits on the volume pot push pull. I wanted matching knobs keeping in the whole 60's look so I ordered some from ebay , red centers with white rims but the red was no where near a match so I had to carefully sand it off and repaint with the same paint I used on the body. ( Auto acrylic).
I also wanted a trem ( surf guitars must have a trem, it's in the rules!), I'd spotted the Dusenburg le trem a while back and thought it suited the slightly odd style of the build and ordered one , also ordered a Realtone roller bridge. I'm very impressed with the Le Trem.
Tuners are Mini Grovers and she is currently strung with Hellwire 9's.

Smashing paint job klegacy, very nice indeed.

Dedman, great job. Being a Ramones and Hellacopters fan, I've always wanted a Mozzie so after seeing yours I might have to make that my next build.

Calling this one 'finished' for now. A joint effort between me and my 10 year old, and only 5 months late for his birthday. :)

WL-1 kit, with DarkStar upgraded pickups, upgraded tuning heads, custom routed headstock, DIY back cover and pick guard. DIY sprayed knobs. And yes - no truss rod cover. Look away now if you are offended by such nakedness.

Paint was Super cheap Auto brand primer, black and clear, and a Duplicolor Honda Milano Red. Ebony stain on the neck and head, with some Osmocoat brand wax/oil over the top (it's what I usually use on wood...had it in the cupboard)

The kid didn't like my suggestion of calling it 'Shazza', he's gone with 'Vulcan' instead. After the Roman god of fire, metal, etc. Not the Star Trek people.

Comments to date!

1. klegacy SH-1
love the quality paint finish but you didn't paint it yourself. Love the gold paint and black hardware and the tribute to your mum, top build
Superb sparkly finish and a touching tribute. Not often these models come through, they are my favourite of the headless. Great to see something a bit different.
Love the bright metallic yellow paintwork. Whilst not a fan of this shape the colour scheme works with contrasting black hardware. Some interesting grain on the fret board too.
A perfect choice of finish for this style of guitar. Looks perfect.
I love how this has been finished and the clear uncomplicated mix of gold and black. Had to take points off as its not a complete self finished guitar, but otherwise a guitar that I think would be a great one in a collection.

2. Dedman's MKA-2
as always Deddy enters another top build. Love the colour, mods/upgrades and cool logo's. Well done Deddy !
Super cool tiki stylings. Love all the custom touches, really make this one stand out from the crowd. Extra points for lipstick pickups, perfectly suited.
Another Dedman classic with bespoke graphics underneath the scratch Plate. Interesting Hardware & Pickup upgrades. Would be keen to hear what it sounds like.
Typical Dedman attention to detail and eye for the unique. The customisations lift this guitar out of the ordinary.
Love the quirky nature of the guitar and headstock and the compliment that it makes with the Tiki. Great job Deddy! Definite variation in the collection!

3. Golfnerd59's LP-1SS
lovely spalt on this kit, nicely finished and a unique headstock shape, great effort for a first build.
Nicely put together spalt! Would like to know a bit more about this one, next time a write up would be nice. Unfortunately points off for incomplete pics.
Spalted top done in a natural finish always looks very nice. Unique headstock shape with PBG logo follows shape of main body cutaway and a more rounded off truss rod cover may have looked better than the stock angular one. Well done for your 1st entry.
The finish makes the most of this impressive spalt. A future upgrade to a curvy truss rod cover to match the curves of the guitar would be a big plus.
Stunner of a spalting. Love also the classy nature of the natural colours. Only downside for me is the clash of the squared truss rod cover.

4. Adam Barnes' ES-2V
love the natural quilted top, you used the same colour scheme for your last build - natural and light blue, need to vary your colour themes more.
Interesting colour choices. Beautifully assembled, there has been a lot of time and care put in to this one. Gorgeous quilt, handled well. Personally, I think the blue headstock clashes, but to each their own.
Gorgeous quilted top looks great in the natural finish. Faded Bondi Blue is probably in keeping with the beach themed place where you live and has a bit more depth of colour than the ES. Quality upgrades too.
The little things make this stand out from being just another LP styled guitar. The blue/blonde combo really works. The unique truss rod cover is inspired.
I love the two tone nature of this guitar. Beautiful quilting as well. Overall lovely guitar!

5. Shane F's ST-1
love the shade of blue and the lightly relic'd hardware and finish. looks like you stained the maple fingerboard too. Really works nicely the theme, well done.
Nice blue, and not overly reliced. A quality effort for a first timer. Keep it up and we'll be seeing some top work for your next kit!
Nice shade of blue and love the authentic looking aged hardware. Well done on your 1st build.
Stunning blue. Love that you kept the relicing subtle, but this is a guitar that screams "play me", I reckon it will have its own natural relicing soon enough.
Love the blue. Nicely executed. Feel free to go with your own logo though!

6. Andrew Osborne's ES-5V
another classy Ponch build, love the upgrades and the rosewood headstock veneer gives it a nice touch with the natural finish, well done Ponch
Pure, unadulterated class. Not a thing to fault here. The rosewood bridge and knobs are a stylish upgrade. The care and effort evident in the logo and headstock veneers push this into top spot for me. Bravo.
Lots of intricate work done with veneers on front & back of headstock. Another naturally finished beauty with some quality upgrades. It would get played a lot if it lived at my place.
Love this style of guitar. It's hard to go wrong with it. The rosewood knobs, headstock and bridge add a nice touch.
Just quietly and politely mentions class. Lovely build and well done.

7. MJG's WL-1
really top job on the paint and masking would have been hard to get that level of finish. Would have preferred a solid black headstock to match the body and a headstock logo would have really given it a nice personal touch.
Love the two tone finish. Nice, sharp lines, excellent gloss and great colours really make this one pop. I think a painted headstock would have suited the overall feel, but great effort nonetheless.
Wild shape that may not be for everyone but well presented in a stunning red & black glossy finish. Nice touches with red tips on the control knobs whilst upgraded pickups would give it a bit more bite and attitude.
Not a guitar I would choose myself, but this is so well executed, I find myself loving it.
Love the idea of doing a guitar with someone important in your life. Nicely executed and lovely gloss!

Thanks everyone! Honored to pick up GOTM for September GOTM, congrats to MJG/Dedman for runner up & other entrants for awesome entries. I always enjoy looking at GOTM builds for inspiration and hope others can do the same with my ES-5V. It's getting a lot of use (my J-Bass feels neglected...) and its actually a very nice instrument for blues finger-picking - just the right tone & vibe. A great kit and learning experience all round.
