hey guys, looking at possibly get the ST-1M kit. just doing research and opinions. i was looking at upgrading the pickups to the entwistle pickups as i liked the ones that went into my flying v. anyone tried them? whats the difference between them? is the xs ones mean extra small?
sorry never owned or had a strat before and i was thinking of building one.

Hey Brokin, haven't tried the entwistle strat pups but think worth a go
They should all be the same size. Note the pole spacings get further away toward the bridge pup.
This one the alnico will be a bit hotter than the $31 base model pup

I'm putting a set of Tonerider City Limits in my CNC cut strat now, first strat I've cut on the CNC. I'll let you know how they sound. They are $139 a set
this is the set

no worries Brokin. If you are on a budget these ones should sound good.

I'd be interested to hear a review. Or the set I posted last post. There is also a noiseless set $48 each

If you want a gruntier bridge pup you can buy a HSS humbucker single single pickguard and get a juicy humbucker. Or even HSH, there are plenty of options

thanks again wokkaboy. Sorry to bug again but i another question if i get the ST-1M kit and get the upgraded pickups (the ones you mentioned above). the guitar should be fine? the hardware is ok to use? the bridge and tuners? the tuners are ok on the v. i know they are not the best but its holding a tune. the kits standard hardware is ok?
sorry to be a pest. just want to make sure i do the right thing.

Brokin, the hardware on the ST-1M is all fine. obviously upgrading the nut, pup, tuners and trem block are going to make it sound astounding.
If it were me, I would get the grover mini locking tuners as an upgrade as you wont find that deal anywhere else and its only available when you get the kit. upgrade the tuners later to Toneriders. you really can't go wring with the Toneriders.

brokin009

thanks Andy40. i know that deal on the tuners are really good. i do. if i was to get thos tuners i would have to get the entwistle xs62n. are they ok to use if i got those and the tuners?
unfortnatley max budget is around 280. i know not much
i was thinking of getting the tonerider set with the guitar which i would have just enough. but yeah ill be pushing my luck if i do both. i would love too.

Their website shows white covers only for Strat PUP's but you may be able to swap out for some aftermarket black covers if you are really keen for that look.

I've just put Tonerider Pure Vintage pickups in The Count, they have white covers and the stock black kit covers don't fit because of the spacing of the pole pieces so I'm off to stalk fleabay

thats a bugger. might be harder to look for covers than i thought

hey guys. what are you guys using in your strats? I was going to try the entwistle ones but now i think i might be able to squeeze a bit more and get a tonerider set. but there are a few types. i honestly have no idea the difference, i did read the details but unless you know what your doing its like mumbo jumbo to me. lol
anyone kind enough to clarify in dumb peoples terms.
im tossing up between the city limits set or the classic blues set.

Hey Brokin, I just installedhttp://cdncache-a.akamaihd.net/items/it/img/arrow-10x10.png (http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au/forum/#61523949) the city limits in a strat and they sound great. The blues set will have a warmer blues tone not as high gain I'd say. Depends what style of music you like playing. The resistance figures were a bit less than quoted (amount of wire loops on the pickup) but they still sound good.
I think generally the Toneriders are really great pups for the money

Hey Brokin I'll see if I get time to record a demo this week. Here's how the pups look, the pole pieces are higher in the centre so the height to the strings are similar

Hey Brokin as promised a quick demo of the city limits. bridge to neck pup. Haven't had a chance to intonate or give it a decent setup yet and its running stock PBG hardware other than the toneriders. so I'll probably upgrade the bridge, tuners, electrics and a bone nut. I chose a warm channel so you could hear a bit of a warmer tone. Excuse sloppy playing !

Noisy bugger ain't ya Woks, they sound similar but not quite the same as the Seymour Duncan stacked HBs that I just sold to fund the Tonerider Pure Vintage set

haha no worries DK, it's hard to compare pickup sounds when everyone runs different amps and effects

haha no worries DK, it's hard to compare pickup sounds when everyone runs different amps and effects
And it gets monstered by YT or SC, I put a remix of Ride Ride Cowboy up on SoundCloud and in the silence at the end of the track there is significant white noise that isn't there in any of the tracks in the DAW or the master, so it is an artifact of the SC compression algorithm, YouTube does the same.

Just by the by it looks like Sound Cloud is in financial strife and may not survive past the end of the year and Photobucket has a new policy to prevent 3rd party sharing which means those of us who post or pics on here hosted from PB may find them getting blocked

hey guys, yeah i run a jet city tube 20w amp i dont have any effects pedals so basically the sound that you hear from my vids are just pure guitar and of course my terrible playing haha. but when i record (through my phone) it doesnt sound as good as in person. do you guys notice that? i know my phone wouldn't record the best but i didnt think it would've made that much of a difference. Anyway i am learning (trying) some red hot chilli peppers and some Stevie Ray Vaughan do you think the blues set or city limits set?

Hi brokin, a very good mate of mine has been a long time Fender Strat and Musicman owner and we compared his $2k+ guitars to my PBG kit guitar through his Marshall amp.

My guitar has the Tonerider City Limits pickups. We wanted to compare them through the same amp, but by the time we unplugged his and plugged mine in we decided that the difference was so negligible that we couldn't tell which was best.

He was so impressed he asked me to make him a Tele style guitar with the some Toneriders in it and now he wants me to make him another one with Toneriders.

I don't even bother trying other brands anymore. All my guitars have, or will eventually have Toneriders.

No connection with them just a happy customer.

Just consulted Mr Google and came up with this for the SRV Strat, don't forget he had a fairly high action and used fence wire for strings both of which would have had quite an effect on his tone.

Fender Stevie Ray Vaughan Strat Features:

3-color sunburst design with polyurethane finish.
Maple neck with deep, thick oval shape.
Solid alder body.
Fender/Gotoh vintage-style tuners.
Pao ferro rosewood fingerboard.
21 frets.
Dot inlays.
3 Texas Special single-coil pickups.

And this
http://www.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/Features/en-us/myth-busters-stevie-ray.aspx

Tonerider Hot Classics are supposed to be close to Texas Specials but until I get the Tele finished they are just sitting there looking pretty dressed in gold.

haha serious fence wire? i didnt know that. ill be happy if i can play something close to what he plays.

Yeah quite heavy strings something like 12s from memory.

By contrast Billy Gibbons uses 8s

Apparently at one stage SRV was using a 0.017s for a high E string, but then he settled on .013s. Still really thick strings. I use .013s on my acoustic but I can't imagine string bending on it. (Vernon Reid also uses a .013 string set so i'd never want to thumb wrestle him.)

Tuning down to Eb probably helps with bending the fencing wire as that is what you see and hear SRV did.

Simon Barden

I think SRV often tuned lower than Eb, certainly D but maybe lower still, with the really thick strings. But like all good players, SRV would still sound like SRV if he played in standard tune on a Strat fitted with 0.009"s. Or even a Les Paul.

I've currently got a set of three white Kent Armstrong Dual Blade pickups installed on my Gold Strat, which I bought online from Realtone Music, they are actually Humbucking pickups that are in a Single-Coil sized package, they have become my firm favorites because they still get that Single-Coil sound without the annoying background hum noise, I've tried noiseless pickups before but they always seemed to sound a bit tinny to my ears, the Dual Blades sound a bit fatter than Single-Coils, there's a bit more midrange in them but you still get that Single-Coil twang.

Hey Brokin009!

I have a set of Entwistle pickups in my Strat. Neck and Middle pickups are Entwistle single coils and the bridge is an Entwistle PAF style humbucker. The pickups honestly sound incredible!! I can't say enough about them, especially considering their price in comparison to Duncans etc.
