Wondering if anyone has tried the Entwhistle zebra hv 58's, I am looking at putting a set of these (maybe) into my scratch build and was wanting to know wether they were 4 wire pickups as I want to be able to coil split.

I'd 99% say yes but shoot Adam an email to be sure . I used the Darkstars in a build and they were 4 wire

How do you find the cleans on the dark stars Dedman? I put a set of x3's in a lp style and they're pretty hot but I'm looking for something a bit cleaner this time.

hey DK, as Deddy said check with Ads, I couldn't see if they are or not on the PBG shop page but pretty sure they should be coil splittable for that price.

DK I'd check out some demo's on youtube, everyone's opinion of sound will differ. I put darkstars in an explorer and don't think I ever played it clean haha

Yeah thanks Wokka, I've had a look on youtube and like the sound of them, I think I am probably just a bit spoilt for choice. decisions, decisions. Anybody got any recommendations around the same pricepoint? maybe throw a few more choices in to make it even harder to choose

hey DK depends if you are looking for a nice clean sound, crunch sound or both. I've found most the Toneriders to be good value for money, but am keen to hear how the HV58's sound. I heard it on clean on YT and it sounded nice and sweet.
I'm keen to try the TR Octane in a bridge pup should be nice and hot.

Yeah Wokka I had a look at that this arvo and was very impressed, and you're right I haven't ruled out the toneriders (I have only heard good things about them). I have even considered mixing it up a little and putting something hotter like a hdn or even a darkstar in the bridge with the hv58 in the neck, but as I said decisions a plenty.

I put the Darkstars in the coffin guitar which doesn't get played a lot but when it does it usually has the gain wound up and an overdrive and I'm happy with the sound. like a bowl of cocopops crunchy!

niice! The X3's are a bit the same, just looking for a mellow sound from this one, I'll have to rely on the amp and pedals for the crunch. can't wait.

Hi D.K. I have seen these and reckon they might feature in my next HB equipped axe. Sound great and good price too, about half the price of Toneriders which are the best of all these cheaper replacements. In fact, I would go far as saying forget about SD & Di Marzio as they are way too dear in comparison to these.

Hey, I've used a Nemesis AFG – Bridge Pickup in my red start (see http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=6189) and it was definitely 4 wires.
I've set it up with weird switching combinations using each coils independently.

Pretty hot pickup!

Waz, I just checked out the artist pickups you mentioned and wow they sound sweet. really nice clear and articulated cleans, and for what I want this guitar to do I think the bridge( at 15k odd ohms) will still have enough crunch wen driven hard to keep up with my amateurish playing ability. Not to mention the price, what a bargain, thankyou I think I just found my pickups.

Hi DK, I would have no hesitation trying these out at less than $75 for a pair of shiny ones. The bonus is they come with 4 wires too should you feel the need to play with coil splitting as I usually end up doing.
