June GOTM

Guitar of the month Comp time again! While for this there are no fortunes (just fame - or at least within the BYOGuitar fraternity) there's an opportunity for fame for the best guitar completed in May 2017.

May Guitar of the Month (for Guitars and Basses finished in May 2017)

Enter your finished guitar or bass here to be judged for the Pit Bull Guitars June 2017 Guitar of the Month.

Please remember:

For Guitars or Basses finished on (or before) 31 May 2017

One guitar/bass per member per month
It must be a Pit Bull Guitars kit (mods and upgrades acceptable)
Guitar or Bass must be finished and playable

We need at least 4 photos:
· full guitar shot from the front;
· close up of the body finish;
· shot of the back of the guitar; and
· close up of the headstock (please, no brand name logos)

Please post your photos in this thread. If you are having issues posting photos on the forum, please email them to brendan (at) pitbullguitars (dot) com

Please note: This competition is open to amateur guitar builders only. If you are making and selling guitars for profit, you are ineligible. Also while there are some stunning guitars around - you never know what the judges are looking for, so we encourage anyone who's built a Pitbull during the month to enter!

Competition for May closes 31 May 2017.

The sorts of things we judge on include:
· How well has the body and neck been prepared
· Is the choice of finish for the style of guitar appropriate
· How well has the finish been applied
· How well has all the hardware, pickups, etc, been installed
· Does it have the "Wow Factor"
· Which guitar would you make a beeline for in a guitar shop. That is, which one would you most like to take home.

I'm a personal fan of demos - no matter how simple - everyone likes to hear how an axe has turned out!

Also worth thinking - we've got a range of judges and who knows what they'll like (or not), so don't be afraid to enter your guitar - no matter whether you think it's good enough to win or not - on the day, you may get a couple to swing your way!

BTW - remember that the winner is invited to be a guest judge the following month!

I'll give it a go...

Marcel's PBG kit LP-1SSP (Kit Purchased via Ebay 14/04/2017. Completed and playable 4pm 15/05/2017)

This guitar build boasts the following....
French polished Shellac on all spalted Maple that has been coloured with my own mix of Yellow & Brown Keda dye, then U-Beaut wax buffed to shine.
FW Jarrah stain on all Mahogany then covered with 2 coats of BC sealer filler and then 4 coats of BC Tru-oil.
Push back cloth wiring (A.k.a .'50's style wiring) on all signal paths.
Earthed Copper foil under/in both pickup cavities and under volume/tone controls.
Brown drop 0.047uF caps.
PBG neck P90
Yibuy bridge P90
Standard PBG kit tuners, knobs, bridge, switch.

Nil fretwork required so far and nil fret buzz.... Some players might want a little work on the nut but I'm okay with it as is...

Waz...

Seriously.... I simply got blown away.!!!

My P90 loaded girl sings to my heart... Clear tomes with plenty of harmonic content.... Through the home brew JTM45/2204 amp set to clean and the Celestion Vintage 30 and G12H75 loaded cabinet behind her I could almost believe I was listening to an acoustic guitar, but way much louder.. This girl is the best sounding build I've done so far and IMHO sounds sweeter than my Gibson '50's tribute...

Haven't tried her on dirty or crunch tones yet... That will only have to wait until I introduce her to Mr JVM210C in the very near future...

Hi there,
This is the first time I’ve done anything like this and I’m really happy with the way it turned out. Thanks to the members of the forum for all their help and to PBG for facilitating this sort of fun :)

The bass is named “ETB Basses – Tali”. ETB were my father’s initials – he used to love working with wood, so this is sort of an homage to him, and Tali is one of my dogs.

This certainly isn;t my last build. Paint is coming along nicely on the next one – “ETB Basses – Kirra”, and plans are afoot for ETB -Nissa and a couple of others :)

Details:
• PBG JBA-4 Jazz bass shape, Ash body. The body is fairly heavily routed and reshaped around the front horns and the rest of the body had a lot of rounding off done on it so it is really comfortable to hold.
• EMG Hz passive pickups, with lots of copper foil shielding throughout all the cavities.
• Pickguard – cut by Pablopepper – Thanks!
• Gotoh bridge and machine heads
• Dingobass bone nut
• Abalone fret markers
• Warwick strings
• Straplocks, string retainer and neck plate from ebay
• The strap was bought for me by my wife a while back - I think it really suits this bass though and is now permanent on Tali.

Finish:
Body – After reshaping and sanding I used dark Timbermate to seal the body and highlight the grain. Then DingoTone Coolangatta Gold (3 coats each of stain, intensifier and final). This was polished with car polish and then a final coat of Gilly Stephenson gun wax to give a smooth, satin finish.
Neck – Lemon Oil on the fretboard. Feast Watson Old Baltic stain on the maple and then lots of Tru Oil over the stain for a nice smooth, fast surface.
Headstock – Tru oil. The ETB Basses logos are waterslide decals designed by my brother-in-law – Thanks Jace! I’ve coated them with Tamiya gloss laquer from a rattle can.

Setup
After a good fret level, crown and polish everything went together nicely. The action is a fast and quite low. There’s no fret buzz (unless I miss the fret when I’m playing it), nor is there any hum/crackle/noise etc. from the electrics.
The tone is pretty even across the fretboard, even up above the 12th fret where no self-respecting bass player should ever venture!

Noises
It's already had a lot of use, and I think it plays really well and sounds like I was hoping it would, the Ash body also gives it a really nice weight and balance. There’s a lot of variety available through the controls, esp. the tone knob, and I’m really happy with the way the whole thing turned out!
Now I just need to be a better player!

Sorry for the essay on to the colour and noise.

I like how the grain turned out in the routed out lower horn. This was after one coat of colour and before I tidied up that glue seam and before the intensifier or final coats.

great looking entry BillB, love the customisation you have done with the body shaping and pickguard. Nice hardware upgrades and the stain colour works really well. Some judges will give bonus points for your dog in the pic I'm sure haha

Hi everyone,

I am relatively new here and this is first playable guitar I've ever built. I've built many model guitars for friends as decorative pieces but never anything that is playable.

I built this for a good friend, he had always dreamed of a guitar made of Olive Wood, the Greek national wood. But as olive wood is far far too heavy even when fully dry, I suggested to him that we try something lighter (basswood) and add in some olive wood elements.

That's when this guitar was born. I cut all the Olive Wood myself.

I finished the guitar in a lovely sour candy apple green and applied several coats of high gloss spray varnish.
19441

As you can see, the green goes perfectly with the natural golden color of the Olive Wood. I love the twists and turns you find in this unique wood.
19442

The headstock design is my own, I veneered the top with two veneers, first a 0.5 mm thick Wenge veneer, then the olive on top of that. I did this for strength mostly, but also to make the sexy black line around the veneer, I think it made it pop out really well.
19443

I also veneered the back of the headstock.
19444

Finally a shot of the back, as required by the rules.
19445

I finished the neck and headstock with 4 coats of danish oil of several days. It's super smooth and plays really well. I'll be uploading a video of the entire build process soon and I'll link to it here when it's finished.

It was a ton of fun to build, and I really learned a lot, I totally want to try my hand at something a bit more complicated next time!

Looking forward to seeing some great entries!

Cheers all!

Thanks so much for all the great feedback! I'm really pleased with the result and it really is rewarding to finally build a guitar that works!

Nice replica where some of the aftermarket parts look authentic. How does it sound as those PUP's look similar to the hi gain Riccy's? Being a typically bright sounding Bass is that why you went with flats or do you prefer their feel?

Hey @IRLGuitars. Thanks :)

ALL the hardware from the bridge to the tuners is Gotoh, and the electrics are all Vintage vibe CTS and Orange Drop caps.

The pickups are just trash but they are the easiest bit to change so my friend who this was made for can choose what he prefers when the time comes.

And so to the comments....
Marcel's LP-1SSP
Tasteful, elegantly finished LP. More flame than spalt on that particular top and the finish works beautifully with it. Jarrrah stain on the back works well too. I wonder if the hardware with the black P90's is a little too much black for the finish, but I think cream and chrome would be too much in the other direction. Regardless, I want to pick it up and start playing.

Love the colour scheme with black hardware acting as a contrast. Don’t see many P90 LP’s built and has some tasty upgrades too. Well done.

This is a great example of what can be achieved with mostly stock PBG Kit. Marcel has overcome glue spot issues, cyclone Debbie and many, many layers of Shellac on all spalted caps is not an easy task. The black hardware mounted on his own mix of yellow/brown dye really grabs the features of that spalted maple. I can resist the allure of those soapbar P90's, I can almost hear them.

Very nice finish which must reflect a lot of sanding and polishing time, it paid off big time. The finish shows off the spault really well.

A classic lookand nicely done. Black hardware always looks good on these. Some nice mods to increase the goodness. Looks great withg P90s

Very impressed. Classic & beautiful. Could have benefitted from a less angular truss rod cover (future upgrade possibility). And you love to play it, which is a great bonus.

Wow, great modifications and body shaping set off perfectly with that wicked custom pickguard (very batarang). The body colour with the black pickguard echoing its shape just works so well. Really nice result.

Radical pointy re-shaped horns look fantastic as does the custom bat shaped scratch plate and unique headstock shape. Lots of hardware upgrades plus abalone dot markers. Looks like a ripper Bass.

Fantastic Bass and a great homage to those that have inspired Billb. Original re-shaping of the body and headstock is great and what can I say about that pickguard! Classic DT Coolangatta Gold and grain pop. nice.

Lots of re-shaping and tastefully done, the upgrades literally speak for themselves, she sounds great! Finish is impeccable.

Lots of mods for an individual look and performance - nice job. A cool look and nice satin finish - very classy, extra point for the nice dog haha

Highly original. Well planned and executed. Excellent job.

Michael Masters' ST-1
That gorgeous olive wood and wild (layered) headstock shape truly make this one unique build. The apple green body has come up beautifully and works so well with the pickguard. I find the white of the pickups and knobs both nicely contrasting but also a little jarring, so I'm somewhat torn. Regardless, a beautiful and skillfully executed olive wood vision.

Labour of love as highlighted in the build videos. Highly figured timber scratch plate and same on front & rear of headstock works well with the translucent green over Basswood body.

The standout features of this ST-1 are obvious, the olive wood pickguard and veneer on the front and back of the headstock is nothing short of jaw dropping. The headstock shape is in a class of its own. I wonder what makes the candy apple green sour? If I had to say anything less than positive, I would question the colour of the back plate, knobs and pickup covers (but that may be a budget issue).

I really like the way the green body and veneered pick guard and head stock play off against each other. Great attention to detail. The headstock design isn't my cup of tea but that's just personal taste I guess.

Really nice green strat, looks good. Lots of work on the headstock - but needs a name! Nice work with the veneer

Love the green and the pickguard. The headstock shape confuses me. I feel it belongs on an 'odder' shaped guitar, and the tuners are too close to the edge of the headstock.

Sundragon's ES-1GT
I love the colouring on this ES. Simple, subtle and elegant it just oozes class with the sharp contrast of the binding. Even the back has a lovely shimmer. The neck colour is a little darker than I'd like, but it works with the body colour regardless. Nice upgrades that suit the build nicely. I'm not entirely sold on the asymmetrical headstock, but it looks good with those tuners. I look at this and I think, smooth.

Looks like a 50 year old antique which suits this style of guitar. Unique headstock shape with binding shows commitment with attention to detail. Nice pair of PUP’s and gold tuners. Only blemish appears to be a repaired crack on the rear of headstock otherwise looks good.

What a special gift to your friend Sundragon. The ES-1GT build with gold hardware and black pickups is a dead set classic. The headstock binding is no easy task either! I wonder what happened to the black Tusq nut? I would buy this guitar.

A long time in the making and like a good scotch it paid off. Awesome finish that works so well with the gold hardware. I'm undecided about the asymmetrical head stock but points for the veneer and binding. All up a very sweet axe.

A very nicely executed ES - classic and classy. Very nice finish and love the satin neck. Love the pickup combo, very nice work

The conservative finish suits this guitar to a tee, the asymmetrical headstock looks like it belongs to a different guitar.

Re_Tlsp's RCA-4
This really does scream 'ric'. The hardware combined with the simple black and white colours are just perfect. Stereo output, nice upgrades and an excellent finish, what's not to love! I'm not normally a fan of rc's, but this is one I'd certainly take a second look at. Well done.

One of the best Ric replicas I have seen built with genuine looking bridge, bridge pickup & mounting ring, plus the upgraded neck pickup. Even the control knobs look authentic too. Stereo & mono jacks too however there looks to be a lot of thread protruding which visually detracts an otherwise spot on build. A couple of rubber or nylon washers on the inner side of jack plate would tidy things up.

Simple, back and white and sleek. Looks like a labour of love, I very much know how difficult it is to get a mirror finish from black, highly commendable!! That headstock shape is very cool. I would have liked to see a build diary for this one and the photos are a bit difficult to see the detail, but its a great RCA-4.

Mmmmm, black and white Ricky. If it had the logo on the headstock I'd be fooled. Excellent choice of upgrades and a pro looking finish. Not flashy but nicely understated.

Absolute stunner of an R Bass - very nice black and white look, very classy and nicely done . Just two points: those pics are a little hard to discern and real details from, and headstock could do with a logo - having said that, this one is all class.

Proves simple can be better than fancy. The replica hardware really adds/improves on this kit. This bass screams "play me".

Konstantina's MMB-4
I'm almost lost for words. The time, effort and intricacy in creating this burned masterpiece is just mind-boggling. Angels and demons with hints of celtic and norse elements, you could spend hours just admiring it. The black hardware is the perfect subtle choice with the body colour, and allows the burning to shine without distraction. The only slight detraction for me is the headstock shape makes it look slightly over-sized to my eye. I love the shape, but it just seems a touch large. Stunning build.

Wow, gobsmacked at the amount of attention to detail and all the intricate work done to produce a truly amazing piece of art.

The choice of a wood burned design on this guitar is certainly something that many of us haven't seen. The design and execution of it is simply nothing short of stunning. I could stare at it for hours. The heastock shape and wood burn design on it is brilliant. The finish, for me, is the only thing that detracts from its beauty.

Excuse me , can you pick my jaw up off the floor please, there's a good chap.
Consider my gob to be well and truly smacked. I think someone said " a work of art" and that is exactly what it is. Your teacher is one lucky individual.

Probably one of the most spectacularly modded guitars I've seen. It's different , ostentatious, yes it remains a very classy job. The work in this is amazing and beautifully done - excellent job

A work of art, and I'm in awe of the work that was put into it. Having said that, the finish looks quite "rough". Perhaps that was what you intended.

DMartin's LP-1ML
A classic desert burst LP, absolutely drool worthy. Executed beautifully, if it was a righty I'd make a bee-line for it in any store. Fantastic finish with a great burst transition. Nice upgrades and an excellent overall build. One word: awesome!

Stunning Lefty LP Burst. Great transition in the colours front & rear which still allows plenty of the flame maple to shine. Love the cheeky headstock logo too.

To tackle a great burst on a flamed maple top straight off the bat is "slow clap" worthy DMartin. The subtle husky burst on the cap, back and neck I would imagine would mirror to beautiful tone it would produce. The mirror finish on that guitar is fantastic.

Some sort of evil left-handed-ness going on here. If I saw that in a shop I'd think "Didn't know Martin did LP's". Superb finish, great upgrades , what can I say except well done!

Some cool mods on a very nicely built LP. That burst is absolutely wonderful and reminds me of some of those super classy Gibson finishes (about the only thing they seem to do well nowdays... oops did that come out loud?). This is a class act from start to finish and if it indeed plays as good as it looks then it's a stunner

Well finished. Very well done.

And so to the runner up...
The judges loved DMartin's LP-1ML
The quality of the finish and the burst have duly impressed...

But as they say in the Highlander, there can be only one...

Congratulations to Konstantina - the first win with an MMB... ever! All the judges loved this one and it was a clear stand piece of art. I don't think any judge would mind having it hang out with their guitars!

Congratulation Konstantina.... A truly wonderful looking and detailed axe....I didn't want to say anything at the time but I knew my chances of getting GOTM were blown the moment I saw your build... It's almost unbelievable that you are giving it away...

EPIC build month, do we know if we have any casualties in the judging ranks as a result? I suspect they all need a Becks and a lie down.
Congratulations to Konstantina and DMartin on the wins and indeed all of the entrants for some wickedly good work, a particularly tough month to be in GOTM.

Congratulations to everyone. I think it is clear reading through those comments that you don't need to go fancy. There was a lot of love for the LPs and the Ric bass. But Konstantina you deserved this for your vision as much as for you execution of this bass.
