What undercoat (rattlecan?) and topcoat (not necessarily rattlecan but if it works i'll use it) do people use?

I'm doing a basswood body TBird so will be painting it rather than staining.

The paint colours in the middle will likely be Createx or similar airbrush colours

Thanks
Bill

automotive paints work fine, and a few people have had good success with White Knight products from the big green shed.
try and use same brand for both to avoid compatibility issues and test on scrap where ever possible.
Also acrylic paints can have issues curing , especially on timber - read my sisters LP build thread. Acrylic dries from the outside in and can seem cured to the touch but still be soft in the middle (a bit like me...). Use fine light coats and leave a day between them - it takes longer but it gives a better result. Also warm cans in warm water before use as it gives more even flow and prevents the spitting rattle cans can be prone to. Leave plenty of time - like a week or two, after you are done before final buff and polish - good luck
