View Full Version : P90 and humbucker wiring diagram

For my next build, considering using a P90 in neck position and a humbucker at bridge.
Thinking of Kent Armstrong noiseless P90 (4 wire) and maybe Tonerider AC2, also 4 wire, one vol, one tone, 3 way switch, with a push-pull to split humbucker to slug coil.
Haven't found a wiring diagram for that combo, so have edited a 2 HB diagram to suit, I think.
Will this layout work, or is there a better way?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hey Grant, I think that diagram should work with no split coil on the P90. What kit is it going in ?
Better wait for wiring guru Weirdy to chime in sure he can show other ways to achieve the same specs. Been a while since I looked at split coil diagrams so I am only guessing.

Wokks, custom ordered a JR-1 kit as a sort of semi-scratch build, thats what this is for. No firm build plan yet, will start a diary for it soonish.

sounds good Grant, so presume you have to route pup cavities maybe ?

Yeah Wokks, only the neck pocket routed, need to do pup routs and bridge posts. I wanted to do my own control cavity but the factory had other ideas, now need to work with/around theirs. Will all be good in the end I hope.

no worries Grant, think the JR-1 control cavity is just a long skinny cavity similar to a tele so you can always enlarge it, can't shrink it without glueing pieces of timber in !

Grant, that layout will short the bridge hot (north start) to ground when the push/pull is up, not what you want. Instead of the red link wire to the middle lug on the push/pull it should be the north finish/south finish series link, then with the push/pull up it will connect the link to ground giving you the slug coil. Diagram 3 on the Tonerider humbucker diagram (http://www.tonerider.com/files/humbucker-wiring-2014.pdf) should be the setup you want for the split to slug coil.

good one Weirdy to the rescue. I've used diagram 3 on Tonerider pups in bridge position

Yep, that should do it. Just remember to check for any phase issues when you're mixing different brands of pups, you will sometimes need to reverse one of them.

Will make a note of that. Thanks again.
