I think this would make a great kit. With lots of versatile tone.

One of these models

was very nearly my 'first' bass.

The scolloped frets and stereo outputs freaked me out a bit too much and I ended up with something a lot more straight forward. I still wonder if I should have got it to this day.

Originally Billy had the pickup out of a Gibson EB-0 in the neck position. I don't know what he uses now.

One of these popped up on my ebay recommended, they look crazy! What does that funky looking device on the e string tuner do though? Tried to do some research but couldn't find anything

That's a hipshot d-tuner. Drops the last string from e to d with the flip of a lever. Got one on my jazz bass.

that's pretty cool a drop D lever. Sure DB would love one on his basses as he is such a fan of Hipshot gear hahah

Was surfing the net last night and tripped over a clip on Billy playing his scalloped neck Yammy that looked more like the green one posted by Pabs and it had the double bladed neck humbucker which looked like it came straight out of a guitar?

Stereo outs are cool. Had them on my original Ric 4001 and converted my yammy BB1000 fretless to stereo too and ran neck PUP through one channel and Bridge PUP through the other. They were also DI'd separately for front of house guys to fiddle with. Wish I still had the stereo splitter cable that was made to do the job....will just have to buy more parts and find some time and patience to do it all over again for the recently acquired Ric 4003.

Here is a clip showing him on that axe...

and another on one of his red ones.

Mmmmm Riccy 4003..... I still get emotional when I think of my 4003 that was stolen :(

It has only taken me 25 years to reacquaint myself and reckon the 4003 I bought recently sounds better than the 4001 I had last century. Comparison may be a bit unfair as not the same amp setup but with the push/pull tone circuit on bridge PUP I prefer the modern sound compared to the so-called vintage sound as it is warmer and fuller.

Need to stop fiddling around building things and spend a bit more time playing and practicing so that I can post a decent soundclip or video. Hope to do one soon to demonstrate differences between P Bass, J Bass, the PBG 5 string PUP's in my EX-5, and of course the Ric. Each have their own unique sounds but none of them come close to the Ric in sound and playability.

Billy Sheehan Bass Spec In addition to the split pickup, the BB714BS carries a specially designed double humbucker installed at the neck position where it generates great low-end tone. The front humbucker is wired through a push-pull high-cut circuit that lets you choose between a traditional "Attutude" neck pickup tone with high-end, or a bass boosted ultralow 60's sound.
Bridge

Bridge and other hardware are black nickel plated which is in addition to looking great, is good for the environment as well since it has no lead.
Neck

Billy's BB 714BS comes with a neck that is slim, trim, and fast. The rosewood on maple neck is thinner and trimmer than the Attitude bass and offers greater playing comfort.
Controls

1 : Woofer Pickup Volume
2 : Main Pickup Volume
3 : Master Tone With Push-Pull Switch

The reason why Billy uses stereo outputs is so he can run each pickup in a different rig. Both rigs are practically identical, he even uses two wirelesses!

Best stereo effect is to run neck PUP to your low frequency rig with either 12's or 15's and bridge PUP to a higher frequency and/or overdriven amp setup run through 10's. Ends up sounding like 2 bass players playing in unison.

For the huge stages that he would work on wireless is the only way to go. I made my stereo patch lead from a 25' stereo mike lead with a female mic canon connector attached via a male canon connector with 2 mono tails 10' long each. All up it was 35' long which is around 11m in metric fed into 2 Boss DI units then into separate channels on my 100w Marshall Super Bass Amp Head and finally blasting out through a 4 x 12" 25w greenback celestion slant front quad box. The 4 x 10's setup most use today had only just started to become popular as I got married and stopped gigging in mid 80's. These days I am happy to use just a 10" or 12" combo for either guitar or bass as they have come a long way in the past 30 odd years since I last was gigging.
