How about a Gibson Moderne? The templates are available. I just don't have the skills to do a neck and without the gumby headstock it's not the same.

I love all the oddities. Sweptwings, Vox Phantoms and teardrops etc. Flying V is next on my hit list in fact.

Hi Dedman, Sorry to say not a fan of v shape guitars. It's all good we love different things.But I see now why some guitarists call there guitars axes's.if you like them You should still build one Dedman.

Hmmmm, I am a fan of some of the futuristic Gibbo's but this is not one of them. Same goes for the reverse Explorer which is top of the ugliest in my opinion whilst the reverse V was just plain dumb.

Explains why the Moderne's are virtually extinct or museum artefacts however some of the more modern day V's do have the similar offset one long, one short rear tail setup and was never a fan of them either.

It only clicked with me a while ago, the Moderne is a V you can play sitting down!!! I kinda dig them, in an oddball fashion, but I would never want to own one.

It's kind of hard to believe that the Explorer, Flying V and Moderne were all designed and originally released in the '50s (except the Moderne, which didn't make it off the drawing board until it was "re-released" in the '80s. And they all flopped as well, which is why Gibson brought a car designer in to make the Firebird to replace them.

I always thought the raised section on the 'Birds had traces of Harley tank/instrument cluster design in it. Shame they didn't call Harley Earl in we would have had streamliners! or Virgil Extner for some serious fins LOL

In all seriousness I do like the Moderne, as a piece of Mid Century Modern design it ticks all the boxes. If they'd given it the right paint and pick guards it would have sold I think, lets face it the Fender jag looks like a counter top spill in outline, but it was presented the right way with colours and such that people liked. When they bought back the V and Explorer they had more options and they sold.

Problem with the design is it's neck heavy, even when seated.
I remember trying a 2nd hand one years ago.

The Ronnie Wood designed Gibson S1 was a crap design as well, neither one thing or the other.

Hey General, just had an idea.....grab another EX-5 kit and use your Moderne as a patern to draw an outline to cut down the Explorer. You already have both and at a glance it looks like there would be enough meat in the EX shape in all the right places to make it work.

When I built the EX-5 & EX-1 both bodies were exact same measurements except for neck pockets due to one being a 6 string guitar set neck & the other a bolt on 5 stringer bass neck.
