I suggest everybody at this forum watch this video, but especially those wanting Ebony fretboards on kit guitars.

Interesting vid, thanks Tweaky, I never knew that. the world needs more people like him. It's mind boggling that they would leave behind trees because of colour. It reeks of the typical foreign owned industry in Africa on the whole, run from a distance with scant regard for the locals and their environment. No doubt the locals were told "black wood only" with out the operators even knowing how its harvested, but then the place is so corrupt nothing really surprises me.

Thankfully others are equally as concerned about this.

The reclaiming of ancient Huon Pine in Tasmania that has been sitting under water for years when dams were built, is another "YEA"! thing happening.
I watched a ABC Landline program about it not long ago.

It's just starting to appear on Aus Ebay in the Instrument > Luthier supply section.[Well, it pops up occasionally ]

Might be worth grabbing if the figured stuff is offered up first to Aus buyers..... keep it stored away till you get your guitar building from scratch thing happening, then you have your perfect wood for the job

Here's one listed now.

I have a few slabs of 10,000 yr old Ancient Kauri from the bogs of New Zealand

What's the density of that?
I'm guessing it would be pretty dense , and be used for back and sides of a acoustic.

I just Googled Ancient Kauri > images.

Seems there is a fair bit of it about [ relatively speaking ], well in this hemisphere at least.

I don't rate much as a player but my favourite guitar is my LTD Strat with an ebony fretboard. Those who can play well comment on it's silky smooth action. My wife has a Taylor 618e also with ebony (all black). I'm lucky enough to have other nice guitars with rosewood and maple BUT ebony if available will always be my first choice.
