G'day everyone I guess I will get this month started with my LP-1SS. This one I went for a black burst/fade on the top with a black back and neck, and polished it up to an ultra high gloss. I was a bit worried about how the spalted top would go with the black fade but I am overall very happy with the results. Anyway, not sure what else to say about this one so less talk more photos.

Yeah the gloss makes it a bit hard to photo, you can actually see the spalting quite well in person. I did consider shaping the headstock, but I decided to keep the stock shape on this because the LP has that classic acoustic figure 8 shape and I wanted to stick to that acoustic feel by keeping the headstock square like you see on many acoustics.

Hi everyone, just thought I would add another picture of my LP-1SS, it doesn't have strings on it yet but it was before I waxed it so it shows the spalting more accurately than the other photos.

Mark H's "Esquire" TL-1Q:

"I started with the TL-1Q kit. The binding and the maple veneer seemed a novelty. I wanted to pay homage to the "Original " the ESQUIRE. Unfortunately the kit didn't come with a maple fret board. I threw caution to the wind and chose Dingotone green to give it an old Vintage look. The pick up is from Ace Guitars, there own " Vintage " brand that really gives a 50's sound."

Hey, everyone again! Decided to put my ES3-B4 into the ring. Came out pretty well, I think. Added Switchcraft parts, CTS pots, and Orange Drop caps. The bridge gave me trouble when I first put it on and split right down the center. Fixed it as well as I could...she plays really nice. By the way, her name is Rose (you know---long lost loves from a long time ago). Good luck to all the entrants. Once again I see some mighty fine guitars. Thanks Pit Bull!10489104901049110492

I missed a couple of entries, well done Fretty the 12 string looks great. Only negative I see is you should have got a blank pickguard (just the pickup holes cut) or got Pabs to cut you one. Have you plugged the hole where the volume usually goes ?
Lipponen the TL-1TB looks very nice, well done
Papaken the ES-4B looks like a cool build too. The standard of all the entries are all very good

Fretworn
14-04-2016, 06:12 AM
Yeah Woks, the original volume pot hole is plugged. There is no way I could play the guitar with a pot right there.

wokkaboy
14-04-2016, 10:24 AM
no worries Fretty, well the look of the pickguard layout is original I'll give you that. What do the 2 x 3 way switches do in regard to pickup config ?

WeirdBits
14-04-2016, 02:33 PM
Switch 1 gives LP style Bridge/Bridge + Neck/Neck and switch 2 is Middle/Middle + Switch1/Switch 1, so you get all seven combo's from just the two toggles.

wokkaboy
14-04-2016, 02:42 PM
cheers Weirdy, no doubt you supplied the wiring diagram to Fretty

WeirdBits
14-04-2016, 02:58 PM
Nope not me, it's a Gibson Explorer III layout if I recall correctly.

Switch 1 gives LP style Bridge/Bridge + Neck/Neck and switch 2 is Middle/Middle + Switch1/Switch 1, so you get all seven combo's from just the two toggles.

This is correct. A few years ago someone posted a link to a site where Gibson had posted all their old wiring diagrams. I went through them all and saved the Explorer III diagram, because it made complete sense to me to do it that way. Haven't had a chance to use it until now. (In the picture the guitar is switched to Neck and Middle pickup.) And moving the volume knob was also a no-brainer. I've never had an issue with doing volume swells on a Tele, and I have small hands. So having the volume knob somewhere were you are likely to knock it when strumming just to achieve a rarely used volume swell was pointless. I suppose if I had grown up on Strats I would have learned to play differently.

PapaKen
17-04-2016, 07:18 AM
Thanks, Gavin. She sounds good unplugged but not much volume, naturally. Sweet through an amp or sound system, though.

Nice entries so far!!Im just catching up.... I like the spalted top on Mulldoe's LP-1SS.. its hard to get good pics of any kind of figured top under gloss, so I feel your pain! It looks good! I like the black hardware...I dont know what smick means, but Im assuming its good! Ill add it to my new vocabulary once somebody tells me what it is!
Im not a huge Tele fan, but I love figured wood, especially quilted maple! Mark, you kept the grain subdued, which isnt something I normally like, but it definitely has a vintage look about it!
Fretworn.. I like the 12 string! Different... very interesting wiring choice!
Lipponen.. now this is a Tele that catches my eye! Love the trem.. its very Gretsch-like
Papaken... is that a wooden TRC? Looks nice.. I like natural looking finishes.. so far so good... nice guitars again! Theres alot of talent here....

Davey, yes the truss rod cover is a piece of hard maple left over from a lap steel project I built from scratch. Just like the looks of real wood as opposed to plastic when I can do it. I have since also added a maple TRC to my ES-1GT which I entered in the Feb GOTM. 10655

Hello all. This is my first build. Purchased the TL-1Q kit from eBay.
I have put a huge amount of effort in as I am very keen to learn the art and make many more guitars.
I have upgraded most the hardware.

The new pickups are Bareknuckles
The Tuners are Wilkinson
The bridge is Wilkinson
And the nut is a Graphite Compound Nut

The finish is Nitro, Hand rubbed for shine.
All sanding, staining and polishing done by hand.

I love it.1068110682106831068410685

Ok Guys,

Here goes my second ever entry in to GOTM competition.....This one is an LP1-MQ with gold bits and bobs.....

Started by cutting the headstock and very cautiously sanding the quoted maple as to not sand through.....

Then (Sorry DB) i used Feast and Watson's Golden Teak and Red Jarrah stains.....Naughty Oil finished....

Upgrades include Graphite Nut, Vintage Tonerider Pups, Gold Grover Tuners, Cream Treble switch and Pup surrounds.....and some strap locks.....

Really enjoyed the build and the confidence is growing with every bit.....

Anyway, can i say some fantastic efforts this month and i am glad to be in the mix....

Dedman, a sumptuous white and black Tele AND a Triumph (Thruxton?)... clearly you are trying to sway this Judge. I may have to abstain from judging this month as you have clearly already won at life.

Actually, confession time, it's been over a year since I've judged a GOTM.

Very nice effort mate, the Tele looks sensational and the bike even better.

Is the Ashtray a Wilkinson? I looked everywhere for those for our TL-51 kit and could not find anything that was reasonable priced. If you could please send me a link for that ashtray, I'll check it out for including with our kit.

excellent entries again this month, I'm still getting over judging 12 entries last month !

Bluesmartyboy don't think the gold neck plate is sold separately, comes in a ST-1 and TL gold hardware upgrade and on FV-1 kits.
I suggest you have a look on ebay or the Realparts online store

here it is

don't forget you will need to order the 4 gold screws as well

Ah what the hell, here's my JBA-4 kit finished, Ash body and all stock except for the Entwistle pups (which sound great BTW). It's my second build and certainly won't be the last.

EX-1 finally done.

Been a long time getting this one finished and below I have listed all the mods and upgrades:

5 Coats Dingo Tone Coolangatta Gold Base Stain
5 Coast Dingo Tone Coolangatta Intensifier Coat
20 + (maybe even more) coats of Tru Oil
Dingobass Bone Nut and Neck Setup - best investment anyone can make. Awesome job and many thanks DB.
2 x Bourns 500k Audio Taper Push Pull Pots - one used to split neck PUP to slugs and the other to split bridge PUP to screws
Set of Tonerider Alnico IV Classic Vintage Voiced Humbuckers
1 x Sprague 0.022 Orange Drop Tone Capacitor
1 x Fidelity resistor & capacitor volume control upgrade
1 x Gotoh 3 position switch
1 set of Grover Locking Tuners
1 x Rosewood Truss Rod Cover
Dingo Tone Wax used on Rosewood Fret Board & Truss Rod Cover
Cat music Conductive Shielding Paint
Epiphone genuine Explorer Hard Case

Only standard parts used were the Bridge, Tail Stop, Strap Buttons & end jack plate and 1/4" socket as too hard finding a black retaining nut for a switchcraft one as threads differ.

This is my entry for the May comp.
Well after many months of work I finally got the LP1 finished.

This one will be very special to me because back in October 2015 when I first start this build my wife was diagnose with stage 4 lung cancer so I decide to make it a tribute to her because she has always supported me from the time I first met her to the present day with my music.

You will notice her name on the head stock, this is one of those name tags that you buy a girl that you meet/like as a sign of friendship back in my day. My wife still had it so I thought what better place to put it to good use. I'm very happy with this one, plays really great.

wow Tuneden, welcome to the forum, I love this build, you have done a great job of the relic, would love to know how you got the aged look on the tuners, control plate and bridge and pickup covers.

Slightly cheaper to build one than buy a 1963 Jazz bass

also points for blurring out the 'F' name on the headstock

damn the judges will be scratching their heads again in a few days !

Wow. A heavily populated competition. I thought I'd identified the winner early, but they just kept coming.

Id be interested to know the judging criteria, or does each judge make up their own?

I'm glad my 3 month build is still a few months off finishing.

Finally finished my 335. The last piece I've been waiting for was the truss cover which took a few weeks to get here.
Upgrades are:
Orange drop caps
Bournes pots
Shielded cable
PBG bone nut
Porter Classic Custom PUPS (these are amazing.. Just amazing!)
Hardware PBG
Pickup rings are from my esb4 build because black suited better.
This guitar is so great to play. I actually prefer playing it to my G&L assat which has been my pride
and joy for 10years. The action is so sweet and the tone is so awesome (sounds like a bought one!)

Hey Darthdamo, Wow! that is just sensational. Take that G&L!

I just did the Facebook post for all the May GOTM entries, thinking we couldn't possibly get any more than the 15 that had been submitted.

I am definitely going to edit that post to include this beauty.

EDIT: I can't seem to edit that post, but have posted it separately.

ps if you feel like leaving a review (very few of our builders remember to leave a review), look for the "Reviews" link on the product page for the ES-1G (http://www.pitbullguitars.com/shop/guitars/pit-bull-guitars-es-1g-electric-guitar-kit/). It's just above the Product Description, halfway down the page.

Apologies for the delay, it has been a CRAZY week.

The Judges have spoken and we have the results for our Pit Bull Guitars May 2016 Guitar of the Month.

Due to the number of entries, we split the 16 entries in half and asked each Judge to comment on 8 entries; half the Judges commented on odd numbered entries and the other half commented on the even entries.

All the Judges scored all of the entries.

Also, as there is a lot to go through, so this announcement will take 2 or 3 separate posts.

And here are the comments in submission order:

Mulldoe’s LP-1SS.

It is obvious time and effort has gone into this black beauty. Fantastic gloss.

A fairly well finished guitar but the stain is too dark and hides too much of that lovely spalted grain. No headstock logo to say you built it and it would have been much more personalised if you shaped the headstock.

I am a Gibson fan. I love the spalted top. The finish is done really well, but perhaps a lighter finish would have shown it off a bit more.. comes down to taste I guess. Overall great build. Lack of headstock shaping loses points for me though..

Mark H’s TL-1Q.

Never thought I’d see a green esquire but I am loving this. The faded out green matches so well with the rosewood board and white pickguard. Vintage modern vibes suit this kit.

Love the quilting on this! Looks like you've got a great guitar here. Personally would have loved to see some personalisation like a logo / symbol or something like that - that said - great all round guitar!

Overall a really nice job. Only detail that needs a bit of work is the pick guard. I would take it off and even up the space around the bridge. Quite an easy job with a file and sandpaper.

Fretworn’s STA-12.

Fabulous finish the grain pops. The setup looks great a personalised 12 string. Unique… great work.

Well done Fretty, you have brought out that ash grain nicely and the colour suits the 12 string. I would have preferred to see a pickguard cut to suit the mods to the controls. Overall a nice build.

I’ve never seen a Strat style 12-string before. Very unique. I like the natural-ish finish, without heavy gloss. Wiring plan is very interesting as well. A blank pickguard with the right holes for the components would have gained a little better score, but didnt lose a lot. With all the acreage on the headstock, maybe a bit larger logo? I hate to nitpick, but with all these sweet axes, you kinda have to.. nice build.

Lipponen’s TL-1TB.

Rustic looking build here. Looks like it was cut out of an old barn. The finish is a bit patchy but I think that adds to the worn look. Gotta love a bigsby tele.

I like the earthy quality of the finish. You have allowed the timber to "speak" and I like that.
Just a few purely cosmetic things to consider though, clean up the binding! This being the main area that lets the overall build down slightly. No biggie though as you can still fix that one. Also the dreaded glue spot on the back.. these can be a challenge but not impossible to overcome.

Great, classic effect - overall stunning guitar! Very striking.

PappaKen’s ESB-4SC.

You have definitely made this yours. A really nice finish with personal touches on the headstock and body. Well done PappaKen.

First time I've seen this model built. Nice colour choice and the finish appears to be well done. You need to submit larger images so we can see more detail. Logos are a cool touch.

Nice build overall. Again, I like the natural finish. I can’t tell if it’s the picture, or the binding could’ve used some clean up. Sounds like the electronics have been upgraded too. The wood TRC is a beautiful touch!

ClintVincent’s TL-1Q.

This green tele oozes high quality. Lovely quilt top, contrasting colours and high quality finish makes this hard to fault. Well done.
Holy Moley thats noice!

Holy Moley... Really digging the acid green finish, especially as you have not overdone the polishing and left it satin. This really lets the figure of the quilt to leap out. Upgrade choices are good, why not go totally crazy and drop a Babicz bridge on?... You will get a lot more out of the Bareknuckles.

Two green quilted Tele's! Great! Love the look and some red hot upgrades! Love the understated headstock logo!

DMorrison’s TL-1TB.

I really like the finish, nice headstock, very good.

Great colour combination and a well finished axe. This is a sexy looking build.

Wonderboy... I like this a lot. The blue is just awesome. The binding looks clean, the yellowish tint of the sides and back just sets the blue off. I love the headstock shaping… reminds me of a macaw! The logo is perfect. Very nicely done!

Andy40’s LP-1SS.
Always have loved the spalted LP-1SS kits and this one looks great in a deep red. I find the headstock inlay a bit too much personally but the finish was executed extremely well. Loving the gold touches on the hardware.

Sweet spalted goodness! Love the outcome and the upgrades! Hope it plays as well as it looks!

Holy Moley! I had go change my trousers.... Andy, that is amazing..
Can never go wrong using red on a spalt, they were made for each other.
I am almost ready to forgive you for using Tru Oil over Dingotone but half a point off 😜

Cont.

Dedman’s TLA-1.

Very nice, a clean finish. Simple is often the best.

Simple but ultra cool tele Dedman, looks well finished and the ash tray a nice touch. The black and white work so well on this shape.

Very clean, very neat. Great looking axe! Love the logo and the ashtray is sweet looking!

Bluesmartyboy’s LP-1Q.

Appetite for destruction? Great looking figure (almost tiger striped) and an excellent fade too. The cream pickup rings set it off.

Amazing quilting - love how the colours have really highlighted it!

Overall a nice job done. Personally I would lose the R/T disc as it is a bit too in your face and possibly swap out the strap locks with gold. Also there is a bit of bleed through on the binding, this is hard to avoid I know, but with some signwriters vinyl tape to mask it you can avoid this happening.. Next build. Otherwise a nice Guitar.

GenXDave’s JBA-4M.

Great finish the ink/clear finish combo really makes the grain pop. It looks great.

Nicely executed build, the colour combination works well and the finish looks good.

I love this bass. Very straightforward, nice upgrades… The finish is what does it for me. Gloss but not plasticy.. I like how the grain of the ash comes through. Nicely done!

WazKelly’s EX-1.

Loved following this build and the guitar has come up a treat. Love the headstock logo - classic.

The Gold DT has really worked well on this beast... but half a point off for sacrilegious use of Tru Oil over DT 😂
Nice touch with the truss rod cover and upgrades.
I am glad you kept the overall feel of this Guitar simple, Explorer style Guitars are easy to go mental with and over do the decoration...

Loving the simplicity and classic lines - colour reminds me of a XXXX. Nice touches like black hardware and pups!

PeterH’s LP-1.

Wow it is obvious a lot of love went into this build and that makes for a fabulous guitar. Great work.

Love the colour choice and the tribute to your wife Peter. Some nice personal touches. a knockout LP for sure well done.

This guitar is amazing. I love everything about it.. the colour.. unreal! The finish... unreal! Love the headstock borders, the "Vivienne"..awesome! This one takes the cake for me. Excellent build. Well done! Beautiful tribute!

Tuneden’s JB-4M.

Droooool. The relic has been done extremely tastefully and I love the aged parts. This is a bass I would love to have a jam on – it looks like it has been played for years. Well done not going overboard.

This has really captured the Vintage look nicely. Great job and a bass you gotta be proud of.

Great job on the relicing - looks like it's spent all of it's life in a dingy dive joint! Colours look great and an awesome overall effect.

GibsonFender’s JM-1.

This wouldn’t be my choice of colour, however, it is finished and built well.

I feel this build was rushed, was put together in about 2 or 3 weeks I think ? A good effort for first build. Think about a headstock logo to tell people you built it for your next build.

I like the blue... nice clean build.

Darthdamo ES-1G.

What an awesome burst you’ve done on this axe. Nicely transitioned between the reds/oranges. The headstock logo is also extremely nice and you’ve gone the extra mile by fading the face of the stock too. Top quality mate.

Very nice Damo. Bursts are never easy to pull off and you did a great job on this one. The only thing I can suggest is with practice you will get the transition blend ins more fluid so you won’t have a tide line.

Burst beautifully executed, amazing gloss and an overall stunning guitar!

Congrats to the winners...all worthy pieces of work. Adam, I know my picture skills aren't the best. Wow! I am super stoked for this build to be in the same category as Darth damo and Peter H and also to be a co-winner!!!

You know everytime I walk past the "man cave" I find myself having to look her up and down. I've even snapped a string I've been playing her so much.

But further good news....the wife agrees with the judges....she gets to go straight to the lounge room!!!

Awesome! It's great news to be a winner amongst all these great builds. Well done to Andy and Peter! I'm so glad I took a chance on building my own guitar. It's been a fantastic experience and the result is a guitar that I can't walk past without busting out a few licks.
The great thing about winning is it will be easier for me to justify my next build! LP gold top here I come!! Boo yah!!
