Anyone have any plans for a classy guitar stand? I saw some nice swoopy/curving looking stands in the US but I don't have that kind of money for stand nor the ability to bend timber. I've googled and spent the afternoon going to dead ends or stuff made out of plastic pipe and broken up pallets.
I spent most of the cooler months 2yrs ago renovating the office/study and the $12 Ebay black stands just don't cut it.

I've got mine mounted on a wall with forward facing guitar hooks. Arranged in the right way you can have yourself a piece of art!
It also gives me that "walking into my favourite guitar shop as a kid" kinda feeling.. Obviously this won't work if you don't have a free wall..

I've sort of gone with the sword store look on one wall, the others are pretty full too :P

I have 2 on-line stores (Swords, Knives etc), plus my art/design so I spend a lot time here, may as well make it a nice place to be :D

I think this build thread (http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=2537&p=47786&viewfull=1#post47786) is the only one on here.

I see you're into collecting Japanese Katanas, and other such swords, there's a camping shop in the Casuarina Shopping centre that stocks some replica Katanas, been wanting to buy myself one.

I have a on-line store that sells high quality ( not stainless steel sword like objects) katana's prices start around $700. If you buy a stainless steel sword DO NOT TRY TO CUT WITH IT! Stainless is too brittle for anything over a 15inch blade, it will snap and someone will lose an eye..........:(

The proper traditional Katanas were made from a metal called Tamahagane, weren't they?, and the blade was differentialy hardened so that it had a hard outer shell which retained the edge and a softer inner core which absorbed shock and prevented the blade from shattering, the two different types of Tamahagane used were called Shingane and Kawagane, the differential hardening is why a Traditionally forged Katana can be used for cutting without breakages.

Thats right Doc, a Proper tamahagane blade will cost you heaps. Starting at about 3k for a unmounted unpolished blade from a "unknown" smith. There was a forge in China doing them in the proper Japanese tradition (the son had trained in Japan), smelting their own iron for 3.5k for a fitted sword and but they had a fire a couple of years back and while they are back making swords they aren't doing the tamahagne line. Japanese steel was pretty poor quality back in the day which is why they developed the complex folded steel and and soft inner core with a harder shell technology. The edge was still very brittle and you will often see dents on the back of old nihonto that saw battle. The swordsman would block blows with the softer spine of his sword rather than risk the edge. The whole martial art of Iaido is basically fast draw, draw your sword , make the cut before your opponent has drawn and avoid steel on steel contact. It's a fascinating history of technology.

And a lot of the cutting ability of a traditional Japanese Katana has a lot to do with the geometry of the blade itself rather than the sharpness of it, plus the swordsman uses a specific technique so that he cuts at the correct angle.

Any way... back on topic * I think Doc wants to be fined again.

I might see if I can replicate one of these 3. I quite like the little octopi looking one.

I've drawn up the short one, used a line drawing of an antelopes skull upside down to get the nice lines without having to resort to bezier curves in Illustrator or PS .OK yea, I'm lazy. But I dont have any materials atm and busy with the tele build. I will do a build diary when I get to it.

My guitar stand plans consist of driving to the local music shop and buying one of those 5 stand racks...

Well, I wanted a long weekend project that I could finish in the 3days so.... made myself a stand.
tomorrow I'll sand the filler off, I only had ebony colour. The disc on the front will be padded as will the arms that actually hold the guitar. so sand and stain tomorrow, clear coat and padding on Monday.

ended up using a large furniture glide thingy as a back rest, a little tidying to do on the bottom brackets uphostery (cloth glued to clear tubing over dowels)

Great stand Dedman. I'd love to have a go at building one. I have one of these my good lady bought me they make them for acoustics and electrics.
